“Fabulous location and most luxurious hotel in Bali!”
Reviewed July 21, 2010

Words really can't describe this hotel! We spent four nights there while on honeymoon in July 2010 and knew it was something special the minute the car turned into the drive. There is no reception, just a shaded area, an incredible view over a rice paddy, and attentive staff to greet you and help with your luggage. We stayed in a one bedroom villa with a private plunge pool and it was wonderful, decorated with Balinese furniture, with a bedroom, upstairs lounge with views over the river, palm trees and paddies beyond, and a bathroom with an outside shower. Although there were other guests staying at the resort while we were there the villas are so well spaced and thoughtfully designed we felt we had the whole place to ourselves.
The thing that really sets the Villa Semana apart though are the grounds, the restaurant, the pool and the incredible views that all three afford. The resort is set on the edge of a sheer drop down to a river, banked by palm trees and rice paddies as far as the eye can see. The owners have made the most of this with the most amazing infinity pool set on the edge of the drop. The path that winds down the hill leads to a beautiful spa which we didn't look at until the morning we left - big mistake! A sunset massage here would have been fabulous.
The food was fantastic, we ate in the restaurant twice, sampling both western and balinese food, both of which were delicious. The breakfasts were a real highlight, again with a choice of local and international dishes. The staff were extremely helpful and professional, particularly the manager Jurg who kept us entertained through many a meal and also took us out on an exhilirating bike ride!
Ubud itself is really wonderful too, and the hotel provide a free shuttle into town on request. In fact, one of the best things about this hotel is its location as an out of town resort, yet with easy access to the centre. It really is the best of both worlds and somewhere to escape from the busy streets when it gets a bit too much!
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and hope to return someday to enjoy it all over again. Thanks Villa Semana - we miss you!

Poised on top of a valley, Villa Semana overlooks padi fields, lush green forests, and the beautiful Ayung river. Imagine waking up and falling asleep to the soothing sounds of rushing water, just a stone's throw away.

The spa is not only fantastic, it's famous. Many people travel all the way just to experience the euphoria of relaxation just beside the Ayung river. Although not a spa person myself, my girlfriend swears by it and never misses a chance to try out the many different spa packages they have.

What really struck me about the place is, unlike other establishments, the owner is always around, ever ready to provide tips, answers, or just chit-chat. Want to experience Ubud and its people firsthand? No problem, Mr Suter frequently takes customers out on bicycle rides. Just ask, but be prepared for a physically challenging time through padi fields and steep slopes!

Villa Semana is one of those places that creep back into your mind long after you've left, leaving a smile. Be sure to pull up a lounge chair, sit back, and watch the birds - and time - fly by.

Our stay was a little marred by the weather, as we had an unexpected return to the wet season. However, lovely spot. Room was fab. Wira was very interesting to speak to, and all the staff were lovely. Location is special, with river and padi field views. Food was also good, and the evening shuttle driver was lovely too - he moaned about his standard of English but we learnt a lot from him. If the weather had been better, our stay would have been perfect. (Due to some sort of error, we were thought to be a French honeymoon couple. We weren't, but the bed had been decorated beautifully, we had complimentary wine and flowers, and rose petals were strewn round the bath. We owned up, but it was a lovely mistake!) Other than that, everything ran very smoothly. Internet access available. Free shuttle. Beautiful pool. Many of the guests when we were there used the room service option for food. Our room was Alamanda and very nice. The outside shower was lovely.

Having stayed in many hotels around the world and also myself a hotel owner, my stay at Villa Semana was somewhat different. Upon my arrival, I found myself very quickly feeling at home (very rare for me). Having a whisky and a cigar in the lounge felt exactly like home (plus the added advantage of hearing the Ayung river flow by). I particularly appreciated the amount of privacy accorded to the guests and that Villa Semana IS NOT a pretentious, chi chi establishment. Instead they did a good job focusing on service, attention to details and pretty darn good food! PLUS they served REAL coffee (which can be a challenge to obtain in Bali). Now if you really want a challenge, have the owner take you out on a mountain bike trek... no better way to know Bali... but the uphill climb can be your year's worth of exercise in 5 mins! I may only ever return to Bali because of how much I enjoyed my stay at Villa Semana. It was not just the hotel, but the entire package that came along with it that just makes it so endearing.

We stayed 3 nights in Cempaka Villa, which is their most expensive villa with full river views. Firstly the views from the garden and villa are amazing it is also very peaceful and I would say one of the nicest views from a villa we have ever had. The staff also make this place special they are very hard working and every request wasdealt with, with a smile and no problem. We did enjoy our villa the outside space was great the inside space was just good the bedroom nice but the downstairs bathroom, kitchen and study needed a little tlc, but as the weather was so nice it didn't really matter. Food was excellent and we ate most of our meals there we only ventured out once into Ubud and the complementary transport worked well. We also had a spa treatment and like others have commented it finished early but was still good value.
Overall compared to other places in Bali this place is expensive, but we felt very relaxed and recharged and the views from our villa were extra special and therefore we would return for a special occasion.

We stayed 3 nights and loved the peacefulness of Semana. The setting is stunning rice fields and some villas overlook the river. We enjoyed being a little out of Ubud yet we were close enough to pop into town for an evening meal or to explore during the day. The transport into Ubud was all part of the service at Semana. Our Villa was river view (Alamanda) and we loved the sounds of the river and the families coming down to the river to bathe. The gardens were pretty and well attended to. We made use of the main pool as it was stunning. It was relatively quiet at the Semana in May so much of the time we were the only ones using the pool. We enjoyed having a cup of tea poolside in the late afternoon tea ...a nice touch. We also had a guided walk (organised with the hotel) through the countryside one morning loved the stroll. Could be tailor made to fit time and energy levels. $10US.
We also had a day mountain biking from Kintimani back to Ubud. 8am till 3pm. The Semana organised this for us with an outside company. We had a great day and would thoroughly recommend this off-the-beaten track excursion through villages and rice padis all downhill! Lunch at the end and an uphill section which was optional. Max 10 people and only 2 of our group wanted to be extended!
The Semana Villas were beautiful inside. They were stylish and spotlessly clean. We felt the introduction to our villa on arrival was very well done and we did feel very special. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The restaurant food was very good and fresh.

Stayed at a villa with views of the padi fields. It is very deserving of all the praise. It is a perfectly tranquil place to rest and relax. The villas are kept spotlessly clean and remarkably for its setting among padi fields, insect free. The service quality is extremely high due to the presence of owner Jurg. Our friends ordered breakfast and left for a short stroll and Jurg had the breakfast returned back to the kitchen until they returned. It is this attention to details that sets Villa Semana apart. Jurg also spent quite a bit of time with the guests to ensure that their needs are met. Highly recommended for overworked executives looking for a place to unwind. We are thinking of booking the entire place for a group retreat.
