I did my research of dive centres before making a decision of who to go with.
As soon as I visited the dive shop, spoke to Sara and learned a little of their style of operation I knew that Nico Dives Cool was the place for me.
As I am an instructor myself perhaps my expectations are set a little high but in my experience in other places I have seen the very good and the very bad and all in between.
I can safely say that Nico and his team have it down to a fine art.
From initial contact I had detailed emails from Sara and the diving plan was tailored to suit my demands. It is always small groups to maximise time under water.
Transport was arranged and a very smiley driver was there on time and even had WiFi on board the Nico dive bus!
At the shop we were introduced to everyone and offered coffee in the morning. The guys at the base are quick to match sizes to customers and they checked and double checked everything before it went in the van. It turns out that these local guys have been trained by Nico as Open Water divers so they understand the equipment and how it should work and fit.
Speaking of the equipment, everything is new and maintained to perfection. Front closing wetsuits, proper diving boots with a firm sole, Apeks regs and BCDs that include all good quality clips for your octopus and pressure gauge (no strapping gauges under your cummerbund)
The briefing on board the boat was thorough with emphasis put on safety procedures and environmental awareness. Nico has a wealth of knowledge of the sites and the tides and currents which can be quite strong in this part of the world, so he plans the dives to avoid fighting the currents and using them to our advantage. He also shows a passion for conservation which he repeated throughout, not to harass the sea life and keeping limbs and fins away from the delicate coral.
During our dives we met Manta Rays, sharks, turtles, sea snakes, sea snakes, a myriad of nudibranch and more coral and fish species than I can mention.
On our surface intervals we were given water, soft drinks, fresh fruit and a tasty packed lunch! Meanwhile Nico answered all questions and his sense of humour and friendliness kept us all informed and entertained.
I will return to Bali and I will only dive with Nico.
Next time I hope to do one of his safari tours where he travels with you around the island diving at all the best spots along the way.
