“Good location - quaint hotel”
Reviewed November 8, 2009

This hotel is one of the first built in Sanur and has a lovely ambiance, but needs a few more repairs to keep it up to scratch. Its a great hotel for honeymooners, couples or singles (mature age that is). The restaurant and full length deep pool which is great for adults and quite unique. This is not ideal for families as there are really no facilities to cater for youngsters and no kiddies pool...family hotels such as Segara Village or Puri Santrian, Sanur Beach Hotel have all great facilities for kids..
It is in a great location and handy to everything as most hotels are in Sanur, its easy to get around.

Hotel is in a great location and the staff are very friendly. The grounds are clean and the restaurant has great breakfast and dinner. But it is let down in two areas - the rooms and the pool. The pool is virtually one depth all the way, about 2 metres, so is not a good option for young families and virtual non-swimmers. The rooms we had were bizarre - a big step down into the bedroom!! Water pressure varied from a fast trickle to a slow trickle and was just warm. We had an in-room safe and bar fridge though no tea and coffee facilities. I gues when you are paying lemonade prices you can't expect champagne accomodation!!

We spent two weeks of September at La Taverna and had a wonderful time there. The first thing you need to consider if you’re going to book at this hotel is that this is very much an old style beach hotel and as such, it doesn’t have all the facilities some people might expect in hotel of its class (television in every room, state of the art bathrooms etc) this is definitely a place that takes you back in time and some of the rooms are quite quirky and even in need of some love, so it’s not for everyone. Having said this, there is something wonderful about La Taverna and its rather antiquated ways, and having traveled all the way to somewhere like Bali, why not stay in place that has a sense of history and is a bit different, even if it lacks some of the modern comforts of larger scale hotels. the hotel is also actually rather good value for what it is. We noticed it seemed to be very popular with Europeans especially French, and I notice from the other reviews that Europeans maybe get this type of place a little better. If you're staying in Sanur, I'd also very much recommend going over to the Islands off the coast of Sanur, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Paneeda which have great beaches and a very laid back feeling. Nusa Panneda is in particular very undiscovered and if you're feeling adventuress, it's well worth the visit.

Charming Bali style bungallows in tropical gardens. We opted for the basic room (called superior) and booked two (one for our teenage kids), it was clean tidy and serviced with new sheets daily. The location is ideal with beach frontage one side and the main road on the other, close to all restaurants and amenities. The staff were fantastic and friendly. We could not fault our stay. The restaurant is more expensive than others in the area but the food is excellent.

If you are looking for top market this is not it but when it comes to service, location, charm and value, you could not do better. Pool is excellent but still over 1m in the shallow end, small children beware.

Sanur is a relatively quiet area compared to Kuta or Legian but still with plenty of bars, shops and restaurants. Beach side restaurants are approx 20% dearer than the main road and you can eat well from Rp25k to Rp80k easily (AU$3 to $10) for a main.

Wine is expensive in Bali compared to beer (Rp140k for local to Rp250k for an import) wheras beer is Rp25k for a large 650ml bottle.

The beach is proteted here by a low reef about 1km off shore so the water is calm, there is water even at low tide, 1 to 3m waves break at the reef offshore. Jetski, glassboats, fishing and sailing all available but do not overwhelm the area.

Taxi to Kuta was Rp100k (AU$12), we did it twice but far preferred the relative tranquility of Sanur to the total chaos of Kuta (even our boys of 16 & 18 years preferred Sanur).

Aim to pay half to 2/3 the asking price for bartered services and small shops, eg they will try for Rp180k for an hour massage but you can get one for Rp60k (AU$7) if you are persistent.

Altogether a fantastic hotel and area, we will be returning.

I live in Ubud and have wanted to stay at this hotel for a long time. The grounds are lovely and the buildings are charming. Our room had great bones - a fun stone bathroom, nice spaces and pretty light. But it felt like a prison cell - white walls and a white bedcover. No art or anything to give it personality. We had a beautiful private garden and great outdoor sitting area, but when we opened the door to the room, my sisters and I were all silent. We had booked the room to celebrate a birthday and it was... well, weird. The check-in was weird..the front desk told us that our room wasn't ready because the guests had not checked out b/c someone in their party was sick. Didn't really want to hear that. The restaurant was weird..the host asked us to sit in the main dining room and not by the beach b/c then he wouldn't have to walk so far. And the food was weird. I ordered red snapper and it was a plate of white fish on top of white potatoes on a white plate. At first I thought it was pasta in cream sauce. You literally could not see it. The fish was so overcooked I literally had to chew it like gum.
I also felt like the price of the room was outrageous for what you got. They quoted me $150, but by the time they converted into "their" conversion rate for the rupiah it was around $175. Totally not worth it. The owners should go to Damai in Lovina for $185 and see what that gets you - now THAT is worth it!

We really enjoyed our stay at La Taverna. The rooms are basic but have what you need.
The hotel has a perfect location right by the nice beach. They clean your room in the morning and change towels and linnen every day. Every afternon/evening they empty your waste basket and check the toilet again. We had a big veranda with a table plus chairs and a divan/sofa. There is lots af good restaurants nearby along the beach and if you want it even cheaper go to the mainroad. The staff was always in a good mood and willing to do their best for you. If you want big hotel luxury style you should choose something else but if you want small nice and friendly you should choose La Taverna. The food in their restaurant is very good. We had pizza and gorgonzola sallad several times.
