My fiance and I booked our honeymoon stay at the Griya Santrian. We arrived late on a Thursday night and got married on the Saturday. We had carried out extensive research to make sure we got the best hotel/ resort within our budget (the Griya Santrian prices are much more reasonable than other hotels and this alarmed us a little!!)

This hotel is just perfect and comprises of blocks of no more than two stories throughout the large grounds of the hotel, joined together by pathways through beautiful gardens. All around you are ornate doorways, statues and water features, and it's particularly lovely at night with the lanterns all lit.

The rooms are large and spacious and spotlessly clean, cleaned every day. Bottled water is provided. The bathrooms are a fair size, again spotlessly clean although the water pressure isn't that good in the shower. We arrived to our bed decorated with petals and bathtub full of petals. The staff were all very very friendly and willing to help.

On the first day we sat around the big pool (which does get a little crowded) and I went for a swim. Fortunately i chose to wear my white bikini that day. after i had swum I noticed that my bikini had gone a rather odd colour, tinged with green! I went back to the room straight away to wash it and change, and then i suddenly thought i had better wash my hair. As i was rinsing it, all green colour was coming out ! Had i have worn a black bikini i may have ended up with green hair (as did several other guests at the hotel!!) I imagine a little too much of some chemical was put into the pool.
Because of this, on the second day we tested out the small garden pool by leaving a white facecloth in the water. However we would highly recommend the garden pool. It is a gorgeous spot, it has a jacuzzi up the steps, it has a gorgeous thatched gazebo with lovely table and chairs, overlooking the pool, where we sat and had lunch each day feeling we were in the lap of absolute luxury. We only ate at the hotel at lunchtimes, where i'd recommend the pizzas which are fabulous.

During the evening you will be absolutely spoiled for choice, as you walk along the long lantern lit path on the beach and encounter restaurant after restaurant all with candle lit tables actually ON the beach , with a refreshing sea breeze. There are many cheaper restaurants on the main road, and although they all looked very nice, i'd rather pay extra for the beach location than be on a busy main street. The local cuisine was wonderful and i'd particularly recommend the Nasi Goreng which was a combination dish, and the spring rolls were amazing, and the best was at the Hotel Taverna - at their beach restaurant which has red coloured table cloths.

Our Wedding day was perfect and we had our first dance on the beach to a live band playing cover versions of Boyzone and other stuff !! I'd highly recommend Romantic Weddings.com who organised a fabulous wedding at a brilliant price, and Ayuk was our wedding co ordinator.

all in all a fabulous trip and no complaints about anything (just be firm with the women who follow you to ask you to come and look in their shop! they all apparently have English names "mary, Lisa" etc, and some can be very persistent, following you and waiting outside any other shop you visit until you've finished, this only happened to us once though).

My husband and I stayed at the Griya with friends last year and can't wait to get back there again in a few weeks!

We arrived late at night but that gave us a change to appreciate the place while it was nice and quiet and enjoy a swim while no one was around. Quiet most nights, nice to sit around and relax after dinner with some drinks as the sea breeze is lovely and the restaurant at the hotel have live music a few nights a week too.

We requested a Beach Side room but on arriving had been given an even better Duplex Suite right by the pool and only a few metres from the beach. The room was lovely and big and had the added bonus of having a little lounge area in it which was perfect for us when friends came by. We had a gorgeous four poster wooden bed and the bathroom although very small (as are most in Asian countries) was clean.

Hotel staff are very courteous and do there best to help where they can. Check the board by the reception desk for details of the cooking classes and other things the hotel can organise for guests.

Both pools at the hotel are lovely, although we were by the main one at the beach with the swim up bar my favourite was the smaller one down the back that also has a spa.

Views from the restaurant are amazing and it is the perfect place to have breakfast in the mornings and watch life go by. The breakfast is standard buffet style with a few choices that change everyday and the chefs make the best eggs! Sorry to say that if you want a really strong cup of tea then take your own tbags to breakfast with you and ask for a pot of hot water.

We never ate dinner at the hotel restaurant but only as there are so many lovely restaurants around within walking distance. THE BEST if you love Italian food is The Village which is at the entrance to the hotel drive way, in Australian standards I would have to say it is up there with some of the four star restaurants, melt in your mouth freshly made pasta with the freshest sauces, stunning decor and fantastic personal service but all at great Bali prices. I think we paid $7 for what would cost you about $25/$30 in Australian restaurants. We did see the one of the romantic dinner for two set ups that the hotel do and it was the most pretty set up - on the beach, little table for two in the sand surrounded by lots of candles and pillars with fragrant flowers everywhere.

One of the main reasons we loved the Griya is because it offers so much to do. You can lie by the pool or beach, you can arrange to go out on jetski's and outrigger boats (highly recommended) without having to walk anywhere, you can snorkel, hire bikes and there are market stalls starting only 200 metres from the hotel which are lovely for a stroll or when you feel like it some major shopping as they have everything.

Highly recommend.

My sister and I and 4 kids decided to start our 3 week Bali holiday with 2 days in Sanur. We had been to Sanur before but only on day trips. The Griya Santrian looked great in the book but even better when we arrived. We had booked Beach wing rooms. I upgraded to a superior whilst my sister had the standard. The rooms were magnificent. All wood and marble with a four poster bed and an extra single. You could have fit 6 people in there with all the room there was. We walked out of our door and were right on the pool. The pool overlooks the beach. Service was good with drinks offered around the pool and back to see if you wanted another one.The hotel is a small 5 minute walk to the Sindu Beach Markets and Benos for meals(excellent feed, top service and HUGE Menu)Say Hi to Putra. The whole beach front has restaurantsand meals at an excellent price. We didnt eat at the hotel and breakfast is not included with the accomodation. We were in bed early every night and I was up before the sun in the morning and took my cup of tea and journal to the beach every morning to watch the sun rise.Tea and coffee making facilities are in the room. They also supply toiletries and bottled water. We didnt use the massage area but it looked lovely being outdoors with big curtains billowing around it. Refexology was also offered near the pool. There is another pool to the rear of the hotel and it almost feels like there are two sections to the hotel with the cheaper accomodation being offered at the rear.Still looked great.

Sanur isnt for everyone and because we had the kids it was perfect as we didnt want night clubs or late nights.

We are normally budget travellers so this was a bit of luxury to start our trip. We are going back for Christmas 2009 to start the holiday in the same relaxing way and taking friends. The rooms are gorgeous.

Confirmation that this hotel is everything that you read in the reviews. The people are very friendly, and really cannot do enough to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as you could wish for.
We got a room upgrade when we arrived, and can recommend the Beach Wing rooms. less than 50mts to the pool, another 30mts to the Beach. how lazy do you want to be? oh all right then... the Massage bay with five girls to pamper you is between the rooms and the pool... (The brochure photos of Pool and Beach do not really do the hotel Justice. They are much better when you see them in front of you. The Hotel is also constantly updating and improving facilities, Rooms etc. I am told this by Aussies who were there also, and who go back every year.
For Breakfast, I would recommend skipping out to the Mona Lisa restaurant over the road from the entrance. This place is one of the best for food in the resort. The Picadilly Pub is not given a name to do justice to its food and the sporadic entertainments they also put on. Everything is so far above what you expect. Forget the 'Pub' tag, because that is not what it is all about.
Taxi and driver can be at your beck and call for the day at a price of less that £20 including fuel. (negotiate hard, then add a tip. They like that.
Be warned... it is hot in the tropics close to the equator, so don't plan too much jogging and aerobics... The bars will assist you in raising your glass full of Bintang Beer (very good) but if you have a taste for (say) Gin, you will need to go to the hotel Tandjung Sari (go to beach, Turn left, walk about 50mts.(you will soon get the hang of this).
I also recommend you take a Jukung boat (Outriggers style Canoe) to the reefs. You probably won't see many fish etc, but the experience and cool breeze is worth it. The boatman will also tell you loads about Bali.
Girls... Get you nails done etc by Mary. she is easy to find...go to beach, Turn right, walk about 20mts (you got it yet?). absolutely everything is where you want to find it.
Trip into Kuta if you must, but you could do more interesting things with your time...(Another Bintang). Iced Capuccino is pretty good at the Griya Santrian too. They will even bring them to you on the beach.
Food is great just about everywhere in Sanur. Cannot really put you off trying just about anywhere to eat. Try the Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, and Tom Yang Goom soup, Try Black Rice Pudding and Fried Ice Cream, and you just have to have at least one Arak...Neat.
Trips out.... Go by Taxi yourself...You will see more, do more, and return in fair state.
Bali Bird Park is very interesting. Pricey maybe, but when you get in there you understand why... can't say more, or I would spoil it for you. There are Komodo Dragons (you will find them...) and there are Geckos absolutely everywhere. Be also aware that Bugs in the tropics are a little bit bigger than those here.....Oh all right.... They are HUGE... but don't worry, you will be fine.
Tanah Lot looks impressive, and so does the Sea there, but the memories are of Fruit Bats and enormous Snakes basking in the sun with their Keeper...(next meal perhaps?)
Seriously, If Bali is on your 'Must Do' list (and it should be) then the World's number two most popular Island will be a definite high point of your life.
Don't expect alcoholic stupours, Kids everywhere screaming, or a rushed, noisy place full of Hi-Tech gadgetry shops, because it is not the costa brava.
Go to Bali with an open mind expecting to be pleasantly surprised that EVERYTHING you want in a holiday is there.
Start by booking the Griya Santrian as your base, and then come back and confirm that all I have written is the truth.
Enjoy, and here's to the next tick on my list.

My husband and I spent two weeks in Bali during March/April this year. We decided to book a hotel for the first night only as we wanted to find accommodation for the rest of our holiday as we go. We booked the Griya Santrian for our first night in Bali as it is close to the airport in Denpasar. The hotel was great. Perfectly located on the beach. Clean. Really friendly and helpful staff. Good food and a choise of 3 different restaurants as well as a pool bar. We ended up staying for 3 nights spending quality time on the beach and by the pool bar drinking cocktails. Sanur is also a brilliant town. Nice shops and good bars. We really enjoyed our stay at the Griya Santrian and Sanur and will definitely go back if we ever get the chance to go back to Bali - which I hope is very soon.

This beautiful beachfront resort, the sister property of Puri Santrian, is unmistakably among the most renowned landmarks in Sanur, gracing a perfectly central location on the quiet shore and with an unending classical design that continues to charm visitors, be it new and repeat visitors alike. Sanur is well known as a spot for luxurious seaside accommodation with its white sand beach bordering a reef-sheltered lagoon, making it one of the safest on the island, and thus perfect for families. As a luxuriant oasis in Sanur, Griya Santrian's enduring warm Balinese touches are imbued throughout its range of impeccable services and facilities. Leafy tropical Balinese gardens comprising flowering undergrowth and large shady trees (some older than the resort itself) dominate its manicured landscaping. And guests enjoy ease of access to the local shopping and dining hubs of Sanur, all within walking distance from the resort. At the heart of the Balinese owned and operated resort are its wonderful accommodation features - well designed and appointed guestrooms are spread throughout its two main wings. The two story Garden Wing comprises a total of 37 rooms with private balconies or terraces overlooking the resort's aforementioned lush gardens. Meanwhile, the ever popular Beach Wing features a total of 20 spacious rooms that let guests wake up to the wonderful garden view and the dramatic Sanur sunrises. Balconies or terraces also overlook the resort's main pool. Cable TV, mini-bar, hot and cold water, IDD telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe and air conditioning all come as standard in-room amenities, to name a few. Alternatively, a choice of 59 Deluxe Rooms welcome guests to garden and pool views with some closer to the beach and feature en suite marble bathrooms and separate showers. For those who prefer a more lavish accommodation will find the Santrian Suite, a capacious suite with a 68 sqm bedroom with an elegantly draped four-poster bed as its center piece, together with a dressing room and private balcony. Designed with a refined modern Balinese approach, the suite serves as the ultimate romantic getaway for couples and honeymooners, while also great for families. For dining pleasures, Griya Santrian presents its main restaurants and outlets, which includes The Wantilan Restaurant, offering sumptuous breakfasts and all-day dining complemented by sweeping ocean views over the Sanur coastline. Meanwhile, Griya Beach Corner serves a wide choice of Italian, Japanese and Asian specialty dishes in a refreshing open-air setting. For a bit of romance, lovebirds can optionally spice things up with a bespoke candlelit dinner. The Spa at Griya Santrian is a thoughtfully designed and purpose built facility that offers a wide range of health and beauty treatments using natural fruit and flower extracts that will totally indulge you from top to toe. It's the go-to place within the resort grounds where guests can discover a great way to re-energize, refresh and rejuvenate during their stay. Griya Santrian opened in 1972 as a luxury boutique resort with a pride and commitment towards the preservation of Balinese arts and culture. While keeping to its roots and now in its fourth decade running, Griya Santrian continues to improve its facilities and services. The most recent addition includes a new wing room which was unveiled only last year, and repeat guests will also be surprised to see a new spa adjacent the resort's lobby, set to be completed this year.
