“A Beautiful Hotel”
Reviewed February 6, 2012

Having read a couple of reviews, I fully believe there are two hotels and someone is confusing them.

The hotel we stayed at had lovely big and airy rooms, with great facilities and wonderful staff. The gardens were impeccable and the three pools were spotless and quiet.

I have stayed in 5* places that cannot hold a candle to this hotel. The staff handled all our queries with patience and professionalism that should be a lesson to many other hotels.

The grounds are not big, yet the hotel always seemed spacious and quiet, with the other attractions of Sanur a mere stones throw away.

The food in the hotel was not as cheap as the places outside, as is the norm with every hotel in the world, but it was much better than nearly all of the cheapies outside. Frankly, having spent a lot of money to get to Bali, I would rather pay £7 and get something good than pay £5 and have something barely edible and as bland as bland can be.

We always had a huge choice of places to relax in the grounds or on the beach, there was never a shortage of sunbeds or mattresses and on many occasions we had one or both of the smaller pools totally to ourselves for hours at a time.

The walk along the beachside is a great way to pass the time, especially if you turn right and leave the crowds and the sometimes annoying traders behind. Having said that, even the most persistent seller gave up after a minute or so.

In summary, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this charming hotel to anyone.

I feel compelled to write a quick response to sned52. We are certainly entitled to our opinions however to say that whilst staying at the Griya one needed to take "trips to Kuta to stave off boredom" I was left wondering if there were two Griya Santrians? In contrast, we found the Griya to be a perfect base for our family to explore the Sanur area on our inaugral trip to Bali. No, it is not 5 star, however, at this very reasonable tariff, one could not expect 5 star. Our family stayed in 2 deluxe rooms close to the beach. We found them to be clean and extremely well maintained. The grounds were gorgeous and despite the heavy rain, the staff were always sweeping and keeping things looking immaculate. The breakfast area had a lovely vista and casual atmosphere. We walked along the beach path every day. We can highly recommend the spa and poolside foot massage...well worth it.

The Griya Santrian is a fabulous boutique hotel on the eastern and quieter side of Bali. My sister has been there a number of times but this was our first trip and it seems far better than a 3 star hotel! It fronts right onto the beach with a number of pools within the complex if you prefer to avoid the ocean. The rooms are large and airy making them very suitable for a couple with a child on a folder bed. The Griya feels like a secluded paradise but in fact as soon as you leave the hotel you find nearby shopping, restaurants and access to cheap transport that can take you to attractions around Bali or to any of the other shopping areas (Denpasar about 20 minutes, Kuta about 30 minutes). If you have children, one of the challenges is keeping them occupied whilst you relax. This is easy at the Griya and Bali in general. It is easy to go jet skiing, wave skiing, cycling or take a taxi to white water rafting (near Urdu), all for very reasonable costs. Meanwhile you can find plenty of opportunities to read or order lunch by the pool, and enjoy a bit of shopping at some lovely boutique shops.

Room Tip: The extra you pay for the beach rooms is worth it! Location close to the pool, ocean and restaurants...

We had heard good stories about this hotel from several previous guests and decided to stay here during our first few nights on Bali. We were 3 people and had heard that the beach wing rooms were the way to go, so we upgraded to one of these rooms. Unfortunately, the room was one of the last in the old style (lots of other rooms have been renovated already) which meant that the bathroom became a swimming pool after someone had taken a shower. Even though we were 3 people, they only replaced 1 towel and it took about 3 hours to get the other two.
Overall the property is lovely, the swimming pools very nice and the location right on the beach.
The reason why we did not return here later on in our holiday was the following: after staying at Griya Santrian we had arranged to stay at a lovely villa near Ubud. A driver would come to pick us up, and had tried to be curtious to us by leaving his business card with phone number at the reception desk at Griya Santrian, asking them to provide us with his details so we could contact him. The reception desk never passed this data on to us and was very rude to our driver when he showed up to collect us. We were a bit shocked and decided not to return to the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for one of their renovated rooms

Stayed in Griya Santrian a few years ago, have to say this is the place to stay in Bali. Sanur is a small village in Bali, but there are lots of places to eat and drink. Griya is a very clean place to stay. We stayed in one of the rooms close to one of the three pools. This is one of the last pools added, and rooms are very clean. Sheets and towels are all very clean and changed every day. Rooms are large and very clean and you have a little bit at the outside of your room with table and chairs to sit every evening. Every day you receive free bottles of water which is great. There are three pools, one very modern and on the beach, the next is like a sunken pool reminded me of a roman pool, a little bit more shaded. Last pool is more modern with decking and all are very clean. Hotel is on the beach and very close to other hotels and restaurants. Would recomend Griya to anyone.

Room Tip: We got room near to new pool and was very quiet.Seen other rooms but basically I think all rooms are...

We were told about Griya 3 years ago and have been back 3 times - the resort is 3 - 3.5 stars but very clean and well maintained - we have stayed in the beach rooms each time and love being near the action - the staff are attentive and the location ideal in Sanur. This is an ideal base if you want a relaxed holiday but still only 30 mins from Kuta if you must!

Room Tip: beach Wing for families - garden suites for couples

Visited this property twice now. On the beach, great rooms, relaxed vibe, friendly service, and 3 pools. A little gem at a very reasonable price.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Griya Santrian welcomes you to experience an enduring tale of warm traditional Balinese hospitality on the laid back sunrise coast of Sanur Beach. This beautiful beachfront resort, the sister property of Puri Santrian, is unmistakably among the most renowned landmarks in Sanur, gracing a perfectly central location on the quiet shore and with an unending classical design that continues to charm visitors, be it new and repeat visitors alike. Sanur is well known as a spot for luxurious seaside accommodation with its white sand beach bordering a reef-sheltered lagoon, making it one of the safest on the island, and thus perfect for families. As a luxuriant oasis in Sanur, Griya Santrian's enduring warm Balinese touches are imbued throughout its range of impeccable services and facilities. Leafy tropical Balinese gardens comprising flowering undergrowth and large shady trees (some older than the resort itself) dominate its manicured landscaping. And guests enjoy ease of access to the local shopping and dining hubs of Sanur, all within walking distance from the resort. At the heart of the Balinese owned and operated resort are its wonderful accommodation features - well designed and appointed guestrooms are spread throughout its two main wings. The two story Garden Wing comprises a total of 37 rooms with private balconies or terraces overlooking the resort's aforementioned lush gardens. Meanwhile, the ever popular Beach Wing features a total of 20 spacious rooms that let guests wake up to the wonderful garden view and the dramatic Sanur sunrises. Balconies or terraces also overlook the resort's main pool. Cable TV, mini-bar, hot and cold water, IDD telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe and air conditioning all come as standard in-room amenities, to name a few. Alternatively, a choice of 59 Deluxe Rooms welcome guests to garden and pool views with some closer to the beach and feature en suite marble bathrooms and separate showers. For those who prefer a more lavish accommodation will find the Santrian Suite, a capacious suite with a 68 sqm bedroom with an elegantly draped four-poster bed as its center piece, together with a dressing room and private balcony. Designed with a refined modern Balinese approach, the suite serves as the ultimate romantic getaway for couples and honeymooners, while also great for families. For dining pleasures, Griya Santrian presents its main restaurants and outlets, which includes The Wantilan Restaurant, offering sumptuous breakfasts and all-day dining complemented by sweeping ocean views over the Sanur coastline. Meanwhile, Griya Beach Corner serves a wide choice of Italian, Japanese and Asian specialty dishes in a refreshing open-air setting. For a bit of romance, lovebirds can optionally spice things up with a bespoke candlelit dinner. The Spa at Griya Santrian is a thoughtfully designed and purpose built facility that offers a wide range of health and beauty treatments using natural fruit and flower extracts that will totally indulge you from top to toe. It's the go-to place within the resort grounds where guests can discover a great way to re-energize, refresh and rejuvenate during their stay. Griya Santrian opened in 1972 as a luxury boutique resort with a pride and commitment towards the preservation of Balinese arts and culture. While keeping to its roots and now in its fourth decade running, Griya Santrian continues to improve its facilities and services. The most recent addition includes a new wing room which was unveiled only last year, and repeat guests will also be surprised to see a new spa adjacent the resort's lobby, set to be completed this year. Several key facelifts are also well underway in 2016. ... more   less
