I note this establishment has excellent reviews from users, which I don't wish to contest. However, my experience was a little disappointing.

We stayed in a deluxe garden suite on the ground floor. The room was fitted out with quality furnishings and the artwork on display in the rooms and throughout the resort was very tasteful. I also noted the high level of workmanship in the construction of the hotel - too often I've seen hotels and villas in Indonesia where it's apparent the electrical, plumbing, tiling, carpentry or painting has been completed in a hurry or without much care and attention. Sudamala is not one of those places - it takes a lot of pride in its appearance and no detail is too small to be overlooked. The pool area is also excellent - very pleasant to be in at any time of the day or night.

Unfortunately, we didn't find much of the remainder of the hotel's offerings were worthy of a 4.5-star resort. The complimentary breakfast was underwhelming to say the least. 3 choices are included in the room tariff: continental, American and "healthy" (there is a fourth choice for an extra 110,000 Rp on top of room tariff that includes salmon and eggs in truffle oil). We chose the "healthy" option on our first morning's stay; it consisted of a small serving of fruit, a bowl of ice cold porridge, stale bread and pastries, coffee (okay) and juice (insipid). It was serviceable enough (except the bread, pastries and juice), but we expected a lot more from such an establishment. We did not return for breakfast (or lunch or dinner for that matter) at the in-house restaurant for the remainder of our stay.

Room service was also disappointing - the kitchen closes at around 9:30 PM, after which time drinks are only available (though surprisingly there is no drinks menu included in the room compendium). Again, this is not to the standard of similar-ranked hotels in the area. The in-room mini bar is a joke - only Coke, Diet Coke and Bintang is available in the fridge and nothing else (aside from bottled water and complimentary tea/coffee). Sure, one can go across the road and buy drinks and snacks at the mini mart very cheaply, but the resort's feeble attempts at offering a mini bar makes me think why do they bother.

I'm aware lots of users on Tripadvisor rave about this place, and I don't intend to challenge their opinions. But for me, while it is by and large a pleasant place to stay, I don't think it represents great value for money when compared with similar establishments throughout southern Bali.

Dear drgi,

Thank you for staying in Sudamala Suites & Villas and for your review. I regret to hear that you were not satisfied with the breakfast offering in our Ares restaurant. Besides choices included in the room tariff we actually offer a wide variety of items in our complete breakfast menu, which should have been presented to you as well. I do apologize for this oversight by our staff. I have taken up the matter of you breakfast experience with our food and beverage manager and chef as a matter of urgency. We have also looked into the matter of the service hours and mini bar set up in our on going effort to improve.

Best regards,

We recently stayed for 2 nights here at the end of our trip. The hotel was stunning, we stayed in a Super deluxe suite. The room was fantastic with an outdoor daybed area and a semi outdoor bathroom. Service was excellent during our time here. The bed was one of the most comforatble we've ever slept in! The grounds were beautiful and the pool area was just perfect. The location is out of the main drag, but we loved it as there are enough restaurants/shops within walking distance which provides everything you need. An absolute oasis - we would definitely stay here again.

This was our third and final stop off on our honeymoon and it didn't disappoint. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating.

We had a room upstairs and it was very large and comfortable. The hotel itself was extremely clean and the pool was beautiful.

Breakfasts were plentiful and there was a great deal of choice. Whilst we didn't eat at the hotel on an evening, the hotel did recommend a restaurant called Char-ming which we ended up frequenting twice and would definitely recommend people try.

We also tried the spa and it was OK, althought quite pricey compared to other places.

Overall, great value, very clean and relaxing place - definitely would recommend.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs as the downstairs rooms have showers outside

Small boutique hotel with a helpful pleasant staff, clean rooms. Front office personnel double as concierge service. Breakfast is OK with pretty much the same items everyday. Some of the breakfast pastries were stale and the fruit plate the same every morning. We tried the Spa on premise, nice but very expensive compared to services in close proximity to the hotel which were also clean. There is a common pool with plentiful lounge chairs. Pool water was a bit cloudy. Beach is disappointing, not private, and a good hike. There are bicycles to take out free for the first two hours, that is if your bike doesn't break down. Doesn't maintenance check these things before guests venture out? Art work on the premises is beautiful. They have done a nice job of displaying it throughout the property. Lots of honeymooners stay here. Great place on a budget. 5 Star hotels are within walking distance for dinner on the beach. Wifi didn't work all the time..... Why does this property have such a high rating????

Room Tip: Rooms in back of the property are quieter, away from street noise. However, Bali chimes play all day...

Dear kfromm,

Thank you for your review of of our resort and for sharing where we might improve to enhance guest satisfaction. We continuously strive to become better at what we do and are already looking into addressing your comments. Our Chef, for instance, is already looking into enhancing the breakfast experience, and while our bicycles do undergo regular checks and service we will certainly increase the frequency of this. Really high quality accommodation, with professional staff and nice pool area. The restaurant is excellent although different choices for day to day breakfast would have been nice. Superb room with lovely balcony area, my only gripe would be that wifi isn't available in all rooms. (though we managed to use a nearby hotels wifi). Well worth staying here if you're not keen on massive resort styles. It's a little walk to the beach but nothing major and a great location to explore the surrounding area.

This hotel is very new, medium size, nicely set up around one big garden area and another pool area. Decoration outside and inside is tasteful. We had a garden suite. Rooms are spacious for two, but only doable for two adults and two kids with extra bed. The bathroom is great and stylish. Nice small garden fenced off to sit outside. Staff is very friendly but still on the learning curve.

No breakfast buffet, but a la carte, limited but sufficient choice given the different versions of eggs and bread available. Great choices and quality of Illy coffee.

We found the public of this resort awkwardly quiet, all just reading or sleeping, hardly any conversation around the pool, that it felt uncomfortable to visit the pool with two well-behaved and certainly not shouting boys. So I cannot recommend this hotel for young children with normal children's' noise.

One other complaint was the very disappointing Sudamala 'beach club'. Certainly not the best part of the Sanur beach, not well maintained and no sun umbrellas ("all broken"!). With a bit of flexibility you can arrange your own solution. Take the other road to the beach, turning to the left leaving the hotel, taking the road in front of the Cat & Fiddle Irish Pub. Once reaching the beach turn left on the walkway. After about 300m, after the Puri Santrian resort, you will find some beach stalls renting two good beds with mattress and umbrella for IDR 40,000 on a much nicer stretch of the Sanur beach.

If you find that too much trouble and are prepared to pay more for a beach side resort, I found the Puri Santrian resort to be the most attractive based on what I could see comparing garden, pool and beach facilities of all the resorts on this 6 km Sanur walkway stretch. We will give the Puri Satrian hotel a try should we again visit Bali.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms upstairs in the front of the hotel, above the art museum, to avoid the street and op...

Than you kindly for your detailed review of of Sudamala Suites & Villas. You’ll be happy to know that the umbrellas, which were being repaired have now been placed back on the beach.

Fresh espresso coffee was a pleasant and welcome surprise. Close walk to the beach. Lovely rooms. Very clean. Great comfortable bed. We were impressed and happy to pay for such a nice place.
