I note this establishment has excellent reviews from users, which I don't wish to contest. However, my experience was a little disappointing.
We stayed in a deluxe garden suite on the ground floor. The room was fitted out with quality furnishings and the artwork on display in the rooms and throughout the resort was very tasteful. I also noted the high level of workmanship in the construction of the hotel - too often I've seen hotels and villas in Indonesia where it's apparent the electrical, plumbing, tiling, carpentry or painting has been completed in a hurry or without much care and attention. Sudamala is not one of those places - it takes a lot of pride in its appearance and no detail is too small to be overlooked. The pool area is also excellent - very pleasant to be in at any time of the day or night.
Unfortunately, we didn't find much of the remainder of the hotel's offerings were worthy of a 4.5-star resort. The complimentary breakfast was underwhelming to say the least. 3 choices are included in the room tariff: continental, American and "healthy" (there is a fourth choice for an extra 110,000 Rp on top of room tariff that includes salmon and eggs in truffle oil). We chose the "healthy" option on our first morning's stay; it consisted of a small serving of fruit, a bowl of ice cold porridge, stale bread and pastries, coffee (okay) and juice (insipid). It was serviceable enough (except the bread, pastries and juice), but we expected a lot more from such an establishment. We did not return for breakfast (or lunch or dinner for that matter) at the in-house restaurant for the remainder of our stay.
Room service was also disappointing - the kitchen closes at around 9:30 PM, after which time drinks are only available (though surprisingly there is no drinks menu included in the room compendium). Again, this is not to the standard of similar-ranked hotels in the area. The in-room mini bar is a joke - only Coke, Diet Coke and Bintang is available in the fridge and nothing else (aside from bottled water and complimentary tea/coffee). Sure, one can go across the road and buy drinks and snacks at the mini mart very cheaply, but the resort's feeble attempts at offering a mini bar makes me think why do they bother.
I'm aware lots of users on Tripadvisor rave about this place, and I don't intend to challenge their opinions. But for me, while it is by and large a pleasant place to stay, I don't think it represents great value for money when compared with similar establishments throughout southern Bali.
