“Dissapointing and NOT Chinese”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Chinese style restaurant in Sanur. Decided to eat here as we found the local Indonesian food quite bland and we can get western back home.

Spring rolls to start, I then had a noodle dish plus steamed rice and my wife ordered a beef dish which was strips of beef wrapped around oriental mushroom supposedly in a savoury Chinese sauce, I can’t remember the name of the sauce. The intention was to share, which we did.

It was a disappointment, the starter was ok, but the main courses were bland and did not taste like Chinese. The beef dish appeared to be over the counter beef slices wrapped around mushrooms with a bland sauce poured over. No bottles of wine only from a wine box by the glass, bintang about 38,000 rupiah. Food was about the same price as that at the Wicked Parrot but the quality did not match.

The waitress insisted on telling us her life story, how poor she was how much she earned and how much it cost to send her children to school, obviously to get a tip. The service she gave was actually very good and she would have got a tip without the hard luck story.

We did not return. Ten percent tax charged, no service charge, internet blogs and ex-pats we met said that only the larger establishments were liable for this tax although we found all restaurants charged it.

It was at least walled off from the traffic noise and fumes.

“Taught the staff about Yum Cha”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

Have always walked past this place after hearing some bad reports a few years ago from some local residents, but this trip we weren't overly hungry at lunch time and decided to give it a try. We ordered a starter but requested to keep the menu. We went on to order 2 more dishes yum cha style and were very happy grazing away the afternoon. The staff didn't quite get the gyst of what we were doing and after the 2nd main course dish was eaten they served the complimentary fruit to end the meal. We probably would have ordered a couple of more dishes to share had they not done this.

A couple of weeks later we returned in a group of 5 and decided to eat in the same manner. We took it in turns to order a dish, would share it when it arrived and then the next person would order a dish. This time the staff caught onto what we were doing and were happy to just keep serving us. We were there for 5 hours, shared 7 different dishes between us all, drank to many cocktails and spirits and laughed a lot. It was the perfect afternoon in Bali.

We loved all the dishes we tried but particularly the fried eggplant stuffed with mince meat and the pork fillets in south-eastern sauce.

The service was excellent and we ladies in the group appreciated the glasses of iced water that were slipped in front of us without us having to ask.

Will definitely be back to this place as will the others in our group.

“Good Meal”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

We tried Starry House as they had a blackboard out the front promoting their Duck meals. It was fairly early in the evening so once we seated were surprised to learn they only had one small portion of the duck left. We ordered this portion...what a pity that's all they had left as it was beautiful. Service was OK and prices reasonable.
