“Our best stay in Bali”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2011

My friend and I just arrived back from a 2 week holiday in Bali. We stayed in 3 different hotels in Bali throughout our holiday. We feel the Ugly Duckling provided us with our best overall experience. It is a budget hotel, therefore don’t expect 5 star furnishings; however what it may lack in décor, it certainly makes up in ambiance and charm. The hosts ‘Bill and Gael’ are very welcoming, down to earth, friendly people. The Bintang is icy cold and the food is fresh, offering good value for money. The pool and its surrounding gardens are beautiful, making it the perfect retreat for relaxation. The hotel is situation in the heart of Sanur and is very accessible to the beach, restaurants, massage, markets etc. I would highly recommend this hotel to any traveller on a budget, who is looking for a warm and genuine place to stay.

A friend and I booked this hotel after searching the internet and tripadvisor for simple budget accomodation close to my favourite restaurants!

The hotel is situated in the heart of Sanur on the main street, within walking distance of the night markets, Hardys, and across the road from The Bonsai which leads you down to the beach.

The rooms are pretty basic, in particular the bathrooms, but were clean and adequate for our needs. Our room had the biggest bar fridge I have seen in Bali hotel room which was perfect for our Bintang! All rooms look out over the small but well maintained gardens and the pool is lovely.

The Ducks Nutz is a lively expat bar that serves the coldest beer I've had in Bali. The food is not their strongest point, but that is not a problem, with so many fabulous places to eat so close by. They had free internet, but as other reviewers have commented- it did only work in the bar area, which was noisy at times.

Bill and Gael made us feel very welcome and all the staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is great value for the price and I will certainly be back again.. (In Spetember in fact!).

The accommodation seemed reasonable for the cost. Got a cold fridge, a shower hose without anywhere to hold the nozzle in the shower. Some bloke next door with an angle grinder going the time I was staying there. The pool was good just watch out for the sharp tiles at the deep end, they might open you up. The hosts were pleasant on the whole tho the guy host was getting around like he lost $100 and found $1.

First of all, the hosts are nice and all but i doubt you will find a place in bali which this is not the case...

The Guesthouse is behind the expat restaurant, pool is ok but the rooms are really dirty and old. the did got cleaned everyday but probably for a second. I would really suggest to stay in another guesthouse or general someplace else than sanur as the beach is the wrost i have ever seen. the north or east sea in europe are a paradise compared to the sanur beach....

We booked this room because of the tripadvisor ratings given that most of the ratings are coming from australians and the owners are australians...this says all i guess...

Oh yeah and for the wifi nerds, it only works in the rather noisy bar NOT in the rooms or near the pool...

We spent a lot of time searching the internet for somewhere different to stay and after reading the comments (both good and bad) decided that for the price what did we have to lose? Some of the previous comments are sound (both good and bad) but for goodness sake it is a very cheap place to stay and we loved it. The staff are just fabulous, very friendly and happy to chat or help. The owners make you feel welcome as soon as you step over the thresh-hold, the grounds are small but gorgeous and though the rooms are very basic, they are sufficient and have the basic requirements, bed , though a little hard for me :0), bathroom, fridge and kettle, but again I think what everyone forgets if you want a five star hotel go and pay the money and stay in a five star hotel. We enjoyed the Ugly Duck much more than any of the more expensive hotels we have stayed in. It does need a little TLC but we are talking Bali and all good things come to those who wait. We have already recommended to our friends, those that want a friendly unpretentious place to stay that is.

We booked this room via email, communication was excellent. However as the name And ownership has changed but the signs havent it was little hard to find. We got there to find a dark bar closed up and a security/night receptionist seated out the front who was a very pleasant man who showed us to the room. The rooms are very dated and I know the older something is the harder it is to keep clean, so rooms look dirtier than what they really are and are in dire need of a simple lick of paint, new towels, new pillows genrally some tlc. However it is a very comfortable room nice pool and friendly host. I would recommend this place for travelers on a budget or for people staying for a short period of time, the location is good amongst many shops and restaurants with access to the beach only a short walk. I wish the ownersof this place the best of luck in the future as this place has alot of potential to be a great guesthouse.

We stayed here for 3 nights, and found that the quality of service was poor. The toilet was broken when we checked in, but hotel stuffs were reluctant to fix it. The manager was arrogatnt, and did not listen to us unless we strongly ask for the fixing. So it took more than one day until the toilet would flush.

The location was good, and the swimming pool was also nice. Despite these advantages, we would never recommend this hotel to our friends.
