“A Hard Place to Leave”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

My wife and I stayed in the Oktagon cottage for 4 nights at the end of our honeymoon. Cilik's was the perfect place to unwind and experience North Bali before heading back to our work-a-day lives.

Cilik's is located right on the black-sand north coast of Bali. Each bungalow on the property has its own garden, beach chairs, and roofed pavilion with an eating table and chairs. The beach consists of a series of thin black sand strips and stone jetties. Although it is not a picturesque, expansive, white-sand beach, the water was very clear and generally quite pleasant to swim in. The views across the water were incredible at sunrise and sunset, as the property looks directly out over the open ocean.

Our bungalow -- like the rest of this wonderful property -- was quite unique and tastefully done. The floor to ceiling windows offered great views of the water and the well-kept gardens in our quadrant. The beds, bathroom, and mosquito nets were all clean, well-maintained and perfectly functional. The gardener/housekeeper, Wayan, kept both the house and grounds in great shape.

Meals were a real highlight at Cilik's. They were all very reasonably-priced, fresh, and delicious. All the fish we had was caught freshly that day, and the kitchen staff was more than happy to accommodate our craving for spicy food. Homestyle Balinese cooking is really a delight, and this is a great place to experience it. The kitchen staff did a great job of assembling diverse breakfast and dinner menus. At the Ketut's invitation we visited the kitchen -- located near the main house on the property -- one night during dinner preparation. This was a fun visit, and recommended if the invitation is extended.

Other than relaxing and swimming on the grounds, we took a sunrise boat trip with Nyoman one morning. He tracked down a large school of dolphin and tuna, as well as some spectacular views of Gunung Agung and the verdant headlands of north Bali. We also did some snorkeling in the area just east of the property. The reef and fish were a bit underwhelming after spending a week in south Lombok, but it was still nice for being so close to the property. Our only other formal activity was a hike to the nearby waterfalls with Gede. This is a great way to see the countryside on the interior if you do not have your own vehicle.

Aside from the tranquil location, the staff and owners are what make this unique property so special. They are very welcoming and accommodating without suffocating your privacy. The staff to guest ratio seems to be about one to one, so you will be well attended-to. The staff/owners are eager to get to know you, and provide recommendations for activities based on your interests.

This small resort strikes a great harmony with the under-developed north coast. Motoring along the coast it is hard to distinguish Cilik's from other locally-owned villas and homes: a stark contrast from south Bali and Ubud. We would definitely come back here, and recommend this resort to our friends and family.

We (a couple with a two-year old) just spent three wonderful weeks at Cilik's Beach Garden. The setting is beautiful with lush and spacious green gardens and a small, private sand beach. Villa West, where we stayed, has a very private setting within the gardens and its own little hut right at the beachside for meals with a wonderful view. The villa itself is spacious, has a large living/sleeping room, a small but very useful walk-in wardrobe and a big open-air bath room, which makes you addicted to showers (and our son to baths in the triangular marble bath). Towards the seaside, the villa has large window fronts and an open bamboo/wooden structure right below the roof. This means that with the fan on there is always a nice breeze through the house and no need for any A/C. The villa was kept spotless and tidy and the owner's library in books and CDs kept us well entertained.
The wonderful thing about CBG is the subtle, attentive and ever (child) friendly service. We loved the freshly prepared food and enjoyed several day trips to temples, waterfalls, diving sites and hiking trips with their driver/guide. Together with suggestions for a local masseur and various local hand-crafts men - we were very well cared for.

We have stayed this year agáin for 14 days at Ciliks and again it was a time of absolte relaxation and peace.
The houses are carefully planned and upkept and quite typical balinese with however a European touch and quality. It is a beautiful fusion of luxurious service and life combined with the feeling of being in touch with nature.
The personal is of exceptional friendliness and the setting directly at the sea stunning. For us Ciliks Beach Garden is the place in Bali, If you want to make a vacation without any disturbance except for the sounds of the wave and the daily hello frome the Geckos here you find it. You have to reserve early.

I had rented 3 out of the four villas at Cilik's in February 2012 for 3 nights. Let me start with the positives. The grounds are beautiful, the food is fine and the staff seemed nice. The villas themselves are a bit shabby. Villa West (where I stayed) had cobwebs and the additional 'room' was dank, musty and unusable. More importantly, these are not enclosed structures - they have open clerestory windows that allow many bugs in. I get that it's Bali and there are bugs, but it was problematic. Also, there are only fans in the villas and the heat (in February and on the water) was still unbearable. The two women who were in the Octagon left after one night to stay at Shangrila Oceanside Retreat down the road. They couldn't handle the bugs and had lizards all about their room. I also rented out the Lumbung, but I didn't want anyone to stay in there after viewing it. The stairwell was so steep and dangerous, I had visions of someone falling down the stairs in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. The whole place left me with a 'one step up from camping' vibe.

We stayed for 3 nights at Villa Frangipani, one of two villas at the sister resort to CBG Air Sanih (around 20 kms to the east of CBG). There is something very, very special about this place. Achieved a level of relaxtion that made meditation redundant! Our villa was absolute beach-front, with around 50 m of beach frontage (with views of dolphins in the morning) and about a 70sq m garden to ourselves. The villa was stocked with a selection of books, CD player and CDs, day bed, desk and bed for sleeping. The villa had its own pavillion alongside the beach where we spent most of our time. Home cooked meals were delivered to our beach-side pavillion, with an enormous breakfast and small lunch included in the villa rental price, as was daily cleaning and laundry. The food was incredible - the best we had eaten in Bali. Ketut, the person in charge of running the villas, had such a lovely gentle presense we found ourselves unable to do anything but smile and grin in his presense. For sight-seeing, don't miss the nearby Sekumpul waterfall, and the fishing trip was also fun. Only minor issue was the slightly hard bed.

Cilik’s Beach Garden can be synthesized as the place with the 3 U: Unspoiled, Unique, Unforgettable. Four traditional Balinese villas nestled among lush, tropical gardens at Air Sanih, on the North-Eastern coast of Bali. Each villa has been ecologically built respecting both the local tradition and the nature. Each cottage has its own garden, own beach and own gazebo where one can enjoy the meals or looki at the beautiful sunsets or sunrises. Or just sit there to read a book. No TV, no Wi-Fi, no computers, no noisy hassles but only the waves and the birds accompanying your thoughts and your sleep. The Balinese-German management is a perfect combination of warmth, hospitality and precision. Mr. Cilik and Mr. Rüdiger have been extremely helpful and friendly during our stay as well as all the staff. We won’t forget easily the discretion of Nyoman or the driving skills of Gede. Last but not least: the food is excellent and abundant, freshly cooked for you every day and served at your villa. When we arrived we realized we were totally secluded to the outside world and we doubted (very briefly, though) we would maybe miss to go out at night and eat in a restaurant or to have a drink in a bar. We didn’t miss anything at all as we found there peace and serenity. Cilik’s Beach Garden is the ultimate place where one can fully recharge the batteries being away from the Western stressful life…alas, it turns out to be always too short! We will go there again, definitely. Franco & Bas - Amsterdam

Perfect location, perfect staff, perfect food and perfect vacation. Not a good spot if you are looking for a busy nightlife or surfing. Not a good spot if you want a busier city with shopping. However, if you are looking for an out of the way spot with a staff willing to bend over backwards to help you, great food, private beaches and excursions and a chance to see the "out of the way" Bali; this is the spot for you.

It does take a while to get there, so be patient it is worth the wait;
