This charming little inn overcomes the considerable disadvantage of being in the wrong location. It is set in an unlikely narrow alley off the main road, and is impossible to find if all you know is its address -- the complimentary airport pickup is a necessity as even well-worn cabbies may have trouble.
Its obscure location also keeps you overly reliant upon the hotel’s own transport (at least for the first couple of days), but which is very efficient, reasonably priced, and surprisingly flexible.
Nusa Dua, where Ellie’s is, is lined with luxury resorts but hardly any tourist attractions; there are no interesting places within walking distance. So it becomes necessary to employ hotel transport (or to rent a self-drive vehicle once you master the location) for every venture to Bali’s numerous attractions. The hotel is also too far to keep coming back to shower, change or nap between activities.
Large, well-appointed and very clean rooms include a DVD player (the hotel has an amazing DVD library) and a mini bar, but no cable TV (mercifully!) and the spotless bathrooms have handmade soap and toiletries. Each room has a nice sit-out area or balcony and rooms on the upper floors enjoy a view of the sea in the distance.
The hotel has a breezy covered terrace: perfect for beer or wine (bar glasses are available), or to read or listen to music (a CD-player is provided), or for the must-have deep-tissue massage from Wayan, the hotel’s extraordinary on-call masseur.
Being a small hotel, Ellie’s does not have a full-time kitchen but still provides one of the best breakfasts anywhere – every item, including the coffee and bread, is as good as in the best resorts – and will also arrange from a selection of items later in the day if required.
The hotel has a small pool – far too small to swim in, really – but ideal to lounge by and take an occasional refreshing dip.
It is in its standard of service that Ellie’s truly shines, and it is Van – the hotel’s (British?) manager – who makes the difference. Operating with a skeletal staff, Van will help plan your daily itenary, arrange transport, make reservations, and offer tons of sensible advice. Van makes it feel as though you’re staying with a local friend.
We would unhesitatingly return to Ellie’s as long as Van is there, but may otherwise choose someplace better located (Kuta/Seminyak for beaches/party, Ubud for the art/culture scene, etc.).
