“Beautiful resort, amazing service”
Reviewed June 10, 2009

My boyfriend and I stayed at Amanusa over New Year's Eve 2008, after spending a few days at the Four Seasons in Ubud, which was quite disappointing and fell short of everything one would expect from a Four Seasons Resort. The drive from Ubud to Nusa Dua took HOURS due to the heavy New Year's traffic which really put a damper on our mood, but we were quite impressed with the Aman luxury 4x4 pickup and service. The driver was very friendly - but not intrusive - and offered us cold towels, refreshments, and we also had a choice of several CDs to listen to for the journey ahead. So far, so good. We had heard so much about Aman and how fabulous the experience of staying at an Aman property anywhere in the world is, so our expectations were quite high. I have to stay, upon reaching the resort, those expectations were more than met. We were greeting by our names and escorted straight away to our luxurious - and HUGE - pool villa, where a bottle of champagne on ice and a bowl of fresh strawberries awaited us. We have stayed at some of the best hotels and resorts in the world, and this definitely earned top marks in our books in terms of space, decor and ambience. The rest of the property is lovely, with beautiful expansive vistas overlooking the ocean on one side and the green forests of Bali on the other, a spectacular view allowed because of Amanusa's elevated location.

The true joy of staying at an Aman though is the fantastic service, and Amanusa truly made us feel like we were angels from heaven. We have never experienced such outstanding service in any hotel/resort anywhere in the world, and every day during our stay there we were just blown away with all the little details that go into making Aman what it is. Little surprises, little treats, unexpected gestures... we just never wanted to leave!

To cite a few examples: Even without making reservations, no matter where we went or what time of day, not only did every member of the staff greet us by our names (how did they even know?!) but would be waiting to greet us at the reception whether we were leaving or arriving. For the life of us, we couldn't figure out how they managed to do that. Every evening, we would return to our gorgeous pool villa to find the most divine little treat in a little silver box on our bed (a different sweet each night with a little note, and lovely leather Amanusa luggage tags as a farewell gift), and the pool surrounded by candlelit lanterns - so romantic! Every morning there would be fresh flowers on the daybed outside, and thoughtful sun products and ice water by our pool loungers. This impeccable and discreet service extended to the beach bales which are simply blissful - loved the pots of water placed beside them! The highlight of our stay was definitely the romantic beach BBQ that Chef Lindsay orchestrated for us. He took the time to find out our whereabouts, and came over to the beach to meet me and plan out a menu for the evening (including one of his and his wife’s favourite dishes – love the personal touch!). The final arrangements and ambience just took my breath away, which of course made my boyfriend very, very happy! As an added surprise, they had dressed up "our" bale with beautiful mosquito netting and pillows, with soft Indonesian music playing in the background. As luck would have it, it was the first clear day after a week of rainfall – we dined under a starry sky, amidst dozens of candles in the sand and huge dramatic red "flags" billowing in the gentle breeze – I couldn’t think of a more beautiful start to the New Year. Unfortunately, we couldn't enjoy the evening as long as we'd have liked to, so the crew assured us that the bale would remain as it was for us the next morning - and so it was! Last but not least, the most delicious menu during our one-week stay in Bali. All of this in a setting so spectacular, I would spend hours just gazing out at the view and taking hundreds of pictures.

The only slightly disappointing aspect of Amanusa, if I were to get very very picky, was that the resort is technically not a beach front property. To reach the beach you need to take a buggy or ride a bicycle down a path for 5 minutes. Also, the beach is shared with other nearby hotels, although Amanusa's stretch is somewhat demarcated. But overall, it is a gorgeous place I would return to in a heartbeat.

My partner and I just returned from a holiday in Indonesia and Bangkok, during which we had a layover stop for a few hours and a final night at Amanusa. (We also stayed 3 nights at Amanjiwo, 4 nights at Amankila, and 4 nights at Amanwana, as well as 2 nights at the Sukhothai in Bangkok).

We never intended to stay any nights at Amanusa, merely intending to stopover there on our way into Indonesia to Amanjiwo and on our way out to Bangkok. We had some problems with Amanresorts in planning our holiday, and to compensate us for our troubles they had offered us the complimentary stopovers at Amanusa, as well as complimentary lunches during both stops.

After 17.5 hours from Los Angeles to Bangkok, a 2 hour layover there, and 4.5 hours to Denpasar, the stop at Amanusa was a welcome break. We were very impressed with the resort's beauty, including the impressive main buildings and their ENORMOUS and beautiful main pool. The location wasn't too awe-inspiring for us, as its proximity to Denpasar and the tourist areas nearby really aren't our scene.

We were even more impressed with the Pool Suite they gave us for our stopover. It was our first "stay" at any Aman, in fact, having only previously had a wonderful dinner at Amangani in Jackson, Wyoming, several years before. Needless to say, we really liked the Pool Suite. It was a wonderfully open floor plan with nice, clean decor, impressive space, and a bale deck and pool deck outside that really were amazing. The pool was almost as big as what you might find in a typical big backyard in the USA, in fact. We even had a nice view of the golf course. Since we were only there on our first stopover for a few hours, we had a great lunch (complimentary, again, but wonderful, nonetheless) and then largely spent time in our private pool relaxing until we had to again depart for Amanjiwo.

We ended up having a disappointing diving experience while at Amanwana at the end of our Indonesian trip. Thoughts of the wonderful Pool Suite at Amanusa kept coming back to us, so we decided to skip our last night at Amanwana and instead return a day earlier (easily arranged by Amanwana's GM, Kevin). Even we were surprised that we were so impressed with Amanusa, since before our trip I had thought little of the resort.

On our return for our final night, Amanusa had graciously upgraded us from the Pool Suite we had requested to the Amanusa Suite--essentially the same as our Pool Suite but with a much better, more elevated and private vantage point with views across to the coastline and ocean. Having already been to Amankila, we were actually surprised to discover that we really liked Amanusa in a similar regard, even though it wasn't "right on" the coast.

With such a lovely suite to enjoy, we really spent most of that last full day and almost all of the departure morning/early afternoon in our room and/or enjoying the bale and private pool. We kept meaning to use the main pool, since it was so ridiculously big and impressive, but we ended up never making it out there. We had lunch in our Suite, and it was fantastic. We had a fabulous dinner in the main dining pavilion, and ended up sitting in the bar pavilion afterwards playing backgammon with a few beers before retiring for the night. The next morning, we had breakfast again in the main dining pavilion, since we had such great meals there.

All in all, we were very impressed with Amanusa. For a resort not really on the beach/coast, it really offered a relaxing, tranquil stay. The Pool Suites we stayed in were both fantastic--the outdoor showers, in fact, were a big hit with us. We wish that Aman had outdoor showers at Amanjiwo, Amankila (they had indoor showers that opened to the outside, but it wasn't the same) and Amanwana, too, largely because we already knew how wonderful it was at Amanusa! The private pools were fantastic and the privacy afforded by the Amanusa Suite was superb--though there was still some chance to be seen by another overlooking suite, which we did think odd for such a "special" room. The dining was excellent. In fact, the chef came out personally to meet us for our dinner, and offered to change things up for us if we needed. All of our meals were superb, in fact.

The GM, Monty, introduced himself to us on our second visit, allowing us the chance to finally meet the last of the 5 GMs for the Indonesian Aman properties. He was warm and gracious, and offered all sorts of suggestions for us to enjoy our stay there more, even though we had but the night and the next day there.

Aman's impeccable service was again in evidence, as it had been at every Aman. We had seen a stone Buddha statue at the gift shop at Amanjiwo but had foolishly not bothered to purchase it. While at Amanwana, we had asked their GM, Kevin, if they could possibly locate it and have it shipped to Amanusa for us to see again when we were there. Amazingly, the statue arrived on the final day for us to review. We ended up having them open it up at the gift shop so we could come and see it, but then changed our minds and asked them to bring it (along with 2 other items we wanted to buy from the Amanusa shop) to our Suite, along with packing materials to re-pack it. With total aplomb, a porter brought all 3 items to us and re-packed the stone statue for us as we went along packing our own belongings. It was quite nice and saved us a grueling walk up to the gift shop and back (pretty pathetic, aren't we?). We were very grateful and very impressed again at the tremendous level of service offered at Aman.

Amanusa turned out to be as big a surprise as any of the Aman properties in Indonesia. We really liked it. We most loved the Pool Suite and its big pool and outdoor shower, but we REALLY loved it--perhaps as much as the Pool Suite at Amankila, which is really saying something.

For the avid golfer, Amanusa is probably a dream. The lovely golf course right there seemed to be VERY popular for guests, and this was something lost on us--as we don't golf. But Amanusa is definitely a fantastic destination for that pursuit, in particular.

In short, Amanusa really surprised us and impressed us. We will always have very fond thoughts of the property from our 2 quite short stays, and that in and of itself is saying something in our book.

We were married at the Amanusa in June 2008. I cannot speak highly enough of the level of service with which we were provided. From our first trip to view the resort the staff & service was fantastic. Over the year it took to plan our wedding every small detail & request was taken care of by the lovely Yudhi without question or hesitation. We stayed in a pool suite, the rooms are beautiful, very quiet, we felt as though we were the only guests there & even the night of our wedding we did not see another guest until our guests were leaving. The food & our wedding cakes were AMAZING (thanks Hamish!), the staff beyond compare, friendly but not overly so (everyone knows who you are & greets you by name), not a single detail was overlooked. We have stayed in Bali many times & at some of the best hotels in the world & I have only one word for Amanusa - faultless.

First of all, I must point out that we did not stay over night at the Amanusa, however decided to drop by to have lunch and take a look at the villas and their surroundings.

Considering the steep price of approx. 1000USD/night for a villa, I have to admit I was simply not impressed at all.

It all started with the drive up to the hotel. The outside walls of the complex appeared to be extremely dilapidated and the greenery completey overgrown.

The entrance was small and inconspicuous and there were hardly any staff around to greet us. When they did, they seemed genuinely surprised that they had guests to come and have lunch.

We chose to eat at the Balinese/Thai restaurant and although the views were quite nice, overlooking Nusa Dua, the service was pretty standard and the presentation was nothing special.

When we went to look at one of their villas, we were pretty appalled at how run-down the place looked. The pathways had not been swept properly and there was just no special feeling about the villas' surroundings.

The room, albeit being spacious, had no wow-factor, smelt mouldy and only had a queen sized bed. The deco was unassuming and forgettable.

Overall, considering the Price/Value factor, I have to admit I was really disappointed with our visit to this Aman resort and it has almost put me off wanting to stay at any other Aman resort in the future.

This is one of the best Amans I have ever been to (and I have visited every one in Asia except China and Sri Lanka!).

I attended a wedding and everything was perfect. What truly amazed me was the professionalism of the General Manager, Lisa, who was charming, warm and always there for the wedding guests. Her staff are also perfectly trained and catered to one's every wish. Even an ironing board took only 5 minutes to arrive!

This is a beautiful resort. The website does not do it justice! The pool is magical, the beach is so spacious it is decadent, and the villa... the villa is superb! Sunken bath, outdoor shower, giant terrace with thatched roof, and wonderful views (ask for a villa with sea view). Truly magnificent. And they will renovate the resort now so I cannot imagine how amazing it will be after this work!!

Thanks Lisa (the GM) for a great short break. You are a jewel in the Aman collection Hopefully you can also run Bora Bora!!!

Service levels even better than average for Aman.

Many positives: Serene location, hill top long distance views. Very relaxing environment and ambiance. Prices more reasonable (i.e. resort restaurants) than other Aman or comparable resorts.

Negative: Hill top very long distance view of sea. You must take a shuttle car to Aman owned beach, or ride a resort provided bicycle. If you are seeking ocean front resort, most other resorts offer this and Aman does not. This is not clear anywhere we looked for information on this resort and was our one disappointment.

Staying at Amanusa is dangerous. I have now contracted Amanusitis - a near fatal disease which makes it impossible to concentrate on work once returning home from a stay there.
The place is simply stunning !
I had been there for dinner only on previous stays in Bali, so had some idea of the place, but staying there is something else.
We had come from a four night stay at Amankila - also a wonderful resort, but Amanusa has a lot of advantages over it - naturally you are transported via a very comfortable 4WD, complete with pillows and cold drinks. On arrival you are treated as if you are the only guests there. Straight to the villa, and "check in" is a one minute experience. We were upgraded to an ocean view villa, with private pool. The welcome bottle of Moet arrived seconds later.
The bath was filled with frangipanis, the bed scattered with rose petals ( we had advised Amankila that it was our 20th wedding anniversary, and they had passed this on to Amanusa ). At night our private pool was candlelit, and candles lit on our bedside tables. There was an indoor shower, and an outdoor shower.
The room was simply gorgeous - not too minimalist, and surrounded by private gardens. I like to see some colour in the gardens and decor, and there was enough, whilst still looking very stylish.
The three restaurants are all good - the Italian restaurant - their feature restaurant - was very stylish, and the food excellent. The Thai/ Indonesian restaurant has the best views of Bali, and also excellent food. At the beach, the casual restaurant there serves fabulous pizza and burgers. The head chef came out to meet us one night - Hamish - very friendly and obviously very good at his job.
The pool was fantastic. For most of our stay, I was the only guest in it ! Water temperature was perfect. Poolside service impeccable - as soon as a leaf from the many bouganvillea surrounding the pool dropped, it was swept up ! Cold water, towels and sunscreen were delivered to us within minutes, as was a platter of iced fruit.
To go to the beach you take a car ( beautiful old roofless VW ) on a 5 minute drive around the golf course. I thought the distance to the beach may have been an issue, but not so. It was actually a very enjoyable scenic drive. The beach club is to die for. The sand was perfectly white, the water a beautiful shade of blue. There are 8 private bales, each accompanied by a pair of sun loungers. Once again, you are immediately spoilt by the staff.
The beach hawkers are there, but will only come to you if you allow it. They were not pushy at all, and we enjoyed the process of purchasing sarongs, scarves etc. My husband and I each had a full massage on our private bale ( the hawkers are multi skilled ! ), I had a pedicure, and bought a silk scarf, all for AUD $50 !
So, in all , this resort has it all ! It is very expensive, but once there you forget about that and jusk soak up the wonderful experience. The staff know exactly who you are, from the lobby staff, to the drivers and restaurant staff. My husband was ill for most of our stay, and once this was mentioned to a staff member in the lobby, it seemed everyone in the resort was aware of it, and constantly asked if he was okay, or needed a doctor. ( He loved the attention ! )
I've been to Bali about 15 times, but this was just an incredible holiday, different from the previous visits due to the level of luxury provided by the resort. It is very special. I previously rated Huka Lodge in NZ as my favourite hotel / resort in the world, but this place tops it. I cannot wait to return ( and return I will, at all costs ! ), so just need another special occasion to justify it !
