“Pure bliss”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2009

This was our first time to Bali. We travel a lot (Platinum SPG) and are always wary of reviews - what might do it for one, might not do it for another. Still, after reading all of the reviews, on this site, our expectations of the Laguna were pretty high, to say the least.

The Laguna surpassed all our expectations. They should have their SPG category upgraded from 4 to 6. It is simply stunning. The staff are great. The rooms are great. The food is great. The service is great. There was always plenty of sun loungers available, around the lagoon/pools and they weren't all cramped in, so your privacy was respected. We went there as a couple, without kids. I will outline the best & the worst as much as I can. We will definitely return. Numerous times, I can imagine.

SERVICE
Our room was serviced twice per day - which was fantastic. Any staff we encountered were friendly, courteous and inobtrusive.
It was sometimes hard to get the attention of waiters around the pool. This is a rather expansive area, so one could hardly blame them. You could try to catch someone's attention, but it is faster to get up & walk over to the counter. A flag or paging solution would easily resolve this.

SECURITY
Security is everywhere. You will drive through a checkpoint as your enter Nusa Dua and another when you enter the Hotel driveway, and another when you arrive at the foyer. The check your car, your bags and of course you. Rest assured that despite the contant checking you will never feel frustrated by it. It is obviously for your benefit and the staff are always friendly. Security is as strict as an airport but there is absolutely no sign of a attitude. I felt safer than I do in my own home.

FACILITIES
The lagoons/pools and gardens are exquistite. There is a golf course located right accross the road. The white sand beach is wide and clean. The water is calm. The roaming sales people with sarongs, kites, etc are part of an organisation, which appears to be authorised by the resorts. So the sales people will ask you if you are interested, but won't harras you if you aren't.

The bales are pretty & comfortable. They can be booked at the beach cafe for a nominal fee. If they are not reserved anyone can use them, until some one does book it.
The more family friendly Westin is right next door, so if you want extra facilities (ie bicycle rental) you can skip over there & charge it back to your room. The close proximity of the Westin would be useful if you are travelling with kids and want the best of both worlds.

The business centre was standard.

The gym was great. There are a number of treadmills and cycles. The spa staff were constantly coming in to wipe them down, restocking them with complimentary bottled water & towels. The treadmills are integrated with sattelite tv - so you can run whilst catching up on the news. They have gym style headphones, if you don't have your own.

The spa was heaven, albeit a lot more expensive than the plethora of options located at the Bali Collection (5 minute walk down the road). But that is to be expected. The surroundings at the Laguna Spa are a lot nicer.
The tennis courts were being rennovated whilst we were there; but we have the option to use the courts at the Westin, which wasn't an inconvenience at all.

If you are a scuba diver - surprising the safety standards of the dive company allifiated with the Laguna is not up to par, the gear is very old and the boats they use aren't the best. There are plenty of 5 star PADI centres around. After we left Nusa Dua we found Atlantis Dive Centre [--] - whose standards and quality were up to scratch. We can also highly recommend the shore/wreck dive at Tulamben - it is well worth the 2 hr drive.

The restaurants within the resort are all fantastic. We tried all but one of them.

LOCATION
Nusa Dua is great if you don't want to leave the Laguna - and you probably won't. However if you do get cabin fever, forget exploring Nusa Dua. Get a driver to take you to Seminyak (an expat area). It is about a 20 min drive (traffic depending). Metered taxis (Ask for a Bluebird) are sooo cheap. (Half the price of the toasters on wheels (skinny vans), whose drivers tout themselves just outside the gate). The shopping, restaurants and bars are some of the best I've ever seen.

ROOMS
We used spg points but were still given an upgrade to a Deluxe Studio. Heaven! The room was spacious and styled well. It offered a step ladder off our balcony, straight into a pool. Being able to wake up & jumping straight into the pool was fantastic and became part of our daily routine, whilst we waited for our comlimentary espresso to be delivered to our room. The butler service was great. Again they were attentive whilst inobtrustive. We never called for them for anything other than room service, as somehow they seemed to sense our every need. We felt like they were really making every effort to ensure your stay was perfect. I miss the cookies & chocolates. :)

.... I can't wait to return.

Dear our Valued Global Traveler

Greetings from “The Laguna Resort & Spa, Bali”, A Luxury Collection Resort!

I appreciate your feedback to add a flag or paging on our pool area for a more efficient service. I will discuss this with our F&B team to improve our service.

Thank you also for the comments of our affiliated scuba diving company's safety standards. I will personally follow this up to ensure it is up to par.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights to wind down our Thailand, Bali, Singapore trip. It was meant to be a "throwaway" hotel meaning that I booked it to just round out our trip in a less expensive type hotel. We had just come from the Four Seasons at $1055 a night and the Ayana(Ritz Carlton) at $700 per night for villas. We had a deluxe suite at Laguna. Boy were we impressed! What an awesome hotel for such a good price- not that $240USD per night is cheap for us, but the Four Seasons was so pricey and we were kinda disappointed overall by it.
The Laguna is a beautiful fancy resort that I thought was older, but I understand it went through a multimillion dollar renovation in 2006 and the place looks excellent. The room was very stylish, roomy, separate shower, tub with flowers in it(anniversary). Nice lighting in the room and all around the resort. Out of nine hotels we stayed in, it was the only one that had tiki torches burning.
We just loved the tea anytime in your room. One day there was a staff member giviing out fruit snacks at the pool. The pool is the largest I have ever scene. Just really neat- especially the sandy areas. We swam around the circumference of all the pools and it took us a hour and ten minutes- later we discovered three more areas we had missed. It is HUGE.
There are many resturants within walking distance (7-10 minutes) just outside the Nusa Dua big arch. They are very reasonable/cheap. The resturants inside the "mall" inside Nusa Dua(about the same distance walking in opposite direction), are much more money, also too many people in one area.
Here are some of my other notes I took in no particular order:
-Live Balinese dancers and music playing in very nice open air lobby.
-Beach had extreme low tide(unswimable)
-Buffet Breakfast okay, good juicing station, decent price $16USD
-Lots of nice romantic candles all around at night.
-Excellent service.
-Nice amenties but no Bali logos

TIP: use metered taxis- much much cheaper ($9USD to airport vs $30)
TIP: We booked the taxi driver that was taking us to Laguna for the next day. We did a day trip to Ubud. 6 hours for $50USD +tip. He speaks excellent English. His name is Kadek Rawan mobile- (0361) 7436956 or 081 3533 77799. Oh and his car is very cleanest with working seatbelts.

We were really impressed by the Laguna Resort- felt gulity that I had treated it as a "money saver hotel". It was great. It is just a "regular" hotel resort with small balconies and elevators, so if you're thinking a once in a lifetime honeymoon, I would choose a villa with private plunge pool at Ayana(former Ritz Carlton) for a few nights and then here. Don't get me wrong- the resort and rooms are excellent- but a honeymoon is once and that deserves more than a balcony. For regular vacationing, it's an awesome choice.

The sign by the gate says it all - Welcome to paradise.. If you want to spoil yourself, then this is the place to go. From the moment we checked in, the rest of the world ceased to exist. We booked a lagoon access room, and were delighted. The resort is set amongst beautifully maintained gardens and lagoons. It is a large resort, but it didnt seem too crowded. There are 2 main pools, plus a kids pool and the lagoons that surround the hotel - plus, of course, the beach. More often that not, we had our lagoon to ourselves. There are lots of lounges around the pools which do get snapped up early in the morning, but we prefered to hire the bures around the grounds for full or half days. Far more comfortable, they have curtains if you want to avoid the strong midday sun, and you get water and a fruit platter, and can order food to be brought to you. We ate in all the restaurants, had a buffet under the full moon and even had a romantic dinner in the large cabana, which was amazing. There is a small complimentary afternoon tea each afternoon, which we would tear ourselves out of the bure for. Then sunset drinks at the beach side bar (ah.. the paradise mohitos....) We found all the food to be excellent. Breakfast is a massive buffet of many different cultures and you would be hard pressed to not be able to find something you wanted. Then there is the staff. They are exceptional. Helpful and available, without being intrusive, they go out of their way to make your stay wonderful. Within a day of arriving, almost everyone we encountered knew our names. We had a moonlight massage, which was so relaxing.. In fact, we liked the hotel so much, we only left the resort twice in the time we were there. The resort is also disabled friendly, with lifts to all floors and ramped entrances to each restaurant and bar. This was our first trip to Bali in 25 years, We will be back, and we will definately be staying at the Laguna.

We stayed at the Laguna for 14 nights and have only been back home for 1 day and we are missing it hugely! This hotel was fantastic, ALL staff were incredible, always smiling, friendly and could not do enough to make our stay as special as possible. From the moment we arrived i knew this was something special. I have travelled alot and stayed in many upscale hotels around the world but never have experienced service quite like this. The attitude and genuine friendliness of the staff made this hotel exceptional.

We had a deluxe lagoon view room which was very clean and spacious, the balcony size was perfect for us, a good sized tv, a dvd player which my partner loved, BUT the dvd selection in the business centre was less than good so maybe you could look into a larger selection of dvd's for your guests. The lagoons were always clean and it was quite easy to have a lagoon to yourself for a cool down or swim.

The beach area was lovely, we 'reserved' our chairs early before we went to breakfast but this wasn't a problem for us really as we wanted to get up early everyday to make the most of the day. I prefer to stay under shade on the beach and there was plenty available which i welcomed, for the sun worshippers, you have to move your chairs throughout the day anyway to follow the sun so not 'reserving' a chair wouldn't be a problem anyway as you have to keep moving. The beach sellers were also fun, friendly and polite, we had regular daily chats with quite a few of the beach sellers that we had not purchased anything from. All i will say is please be polite if you are not interested, we saw so many people with no manners being rude to these people who are quite simply trying to make some money. I can understand that beach sellers may irritate some people but a polite no thankyou will suffice,

Breakfast was amazing with amazing service, there is a vast selection of food to choose from and the only problem here is deciding what to have to eat each morning!

Afternoon tea was delightful, a beautiful restaurant setting with amazing little cakes to go with tea or coffee. Staff again were eager to have a chat and make sure we were happy with everything.

We did not eat in any of the hotel restaurants in the evenings due to the ridiculus prices. Being a 5 star hotel you expect over inflated prices but we could not justify spending such huge amounts on meals each evening. We did as the majority did and walked down to Bali collection where we found a lovely little restaurant which we ate in quite often. I do feel this is quite a large negative to this beautiful hotel and management are obviously aware of this. Restaurants were never busy in the evenings and everyone we spoke to had the same view and were eating elsewhere.

The food and drinks from the sand bar on the beach were also far too expensive and again we could not justify eating food from there every day. We had a few meals but something the hotel may want to consider here are portion sizes. I found the amount of food served to be huge and could never finish any of the meals just about managing half of it, annoying, yes due to the prices and the fact that we were wasting food. One suggestion here may be to offer two portion sizes, small / snack size and your normal size with according prices.

The butler service was fantastic we never had to wait long for tea and cookies and it is a very nice service. It all adds to make a special stay here.

Overall this hotel is fantastic with beautiful staff, we are definately planning on coming back here without a doubt regardless of the main drawback of prices. It is most definately a hotel for couples and families and if you enjoy nightlife this isnt the place for you! The area is quite secluded but we welcomed the peace and quiet and weren't interested in bars and clubs at all.

There is no question about where we will stay next time, see you very soon i hope Laguna and thankyou for making this holiday the best.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2009

We were on our honeymoon in July and spent a week at the Laguna Resort & Spa in Nusa Dua, Bali. Overall, this 5 star luxury resort is very good and deservedly at the top end of all the choices available in Nusa Dua.

The resort and hotel itself are very nice. The place is clean and atmospheric. The staff is very friendly, genuine and attentive + speak very good english. The many lagoons available are beautiful, clean and provide an enjoyable swim, very highly recommended. The beach and nearby area is beautiful and serene with its lush gardens, truly a sight to behold. Beach chairs are usually available and relaxing by the pool or ocean can be done in relative peace. The atmospehere overall is very relaxing and the resort, although big, feels compact and enjoyable. Nusa Dua is a closed resort area with many different luxury hotels and feels isolated from the rest of the island. For some this might be a drawback. There is also very much a dual economy in play within Nusa Dua and rest of Indonesia which I will come to in a moment.

We liked our spacious deluxe room with a view overlooking the lagoons on the second floor. A large plasma tv, dvd player and a large bathtub were appreciated. DVDs are available from the reception. There is also a butler service that served (complimentary) coffee and tea around the clock which was very nice. Overall the experience was very enjoyable with only a few drawbacks.

For the nitpicking part,

- For us at least, the prices at Laguna Resort & Spa were quite high compared to local standards. Note, we would understand a small or medium markup considering we were staying at a 5-star luxury resort but overall, the restaurant-, spa- and drink prices were really, really high, even higher than what we have to endure back home in Europe for similar services. Due to this, most of the time we simply walked 10min to the nearby Bali collection "mall" with a wide array of shops and restaurants with standard cuisine but with far more reasonable pricing. Judging by its popularity, we were not alone and I know that outside Nusa Dua, prices would be even less than in Bali collection. This is unfortunate as we would have really wanted to stay in the hotel to wine & dine and relax at the beach bar but with the current pricing policy, we were simply compelled to look elsewhere. The hotel management is probably aware of this, as most of the time, the restaurants at the resort were quite empty while pretty much all of the restaurants in Bali Collection were packed throughout the week.

- Most of the time rooms are quite damp and moist. Whether this is normal everywhere in Bali we do not know but even with changing the sheets every day, most of the linen and furniture still felt moist throughout our stay. I would not want to know how the situation is during the wet season but this did not bother us enough to want to change rooms.

- Afternoon tea is not advertised or really mentioned anywhere (except on the hotel tv channel). This is a very nice (and complimentary) addition with a small selection of different snacks and coffee & tea served in the mayang sari restaurant during the afternoon for the guests with piano music & small shows.

- Internet access should be complimentary. Once again, the prices for access to the internet are, you guessed it, pretty high.

Although we really liked our stay at Laguna Resort & Spa and would recommend it to others, the above nitpicks keep it from reaching a 5 star rating in our books. We would give it an 8.0 out of ten.

Dear our Valued Global Traveler

Thank you for choosing The Laguna as your honeymoon abode in July 2009.

We have noted your comments on the food and beverage pricing in the restaurants. It is our aim to provide our guests with the best value for money in a safe and friendly environment at all the times in our Food & Beverage outlets. Our Resort has very stringent quality levels on food safety and hygiene standards in place, which is not always the case in free standing better priced restaurants. We appreciate your input and our Food & Beverage Team has been briefed to revisit our pricing.

Thank you also for your feedback of the room condition and hotel information for our guests. I have reviewed these with my team for our improvement.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the warmth and indigenous hospitality of The Laguna when you will notice a significant improvement.
