This was our third stay at the Mercure Kuta.
We normally shun prepaid transfers, always preferring to make our own way to our accommodation, having had horrendous experiences in the past. The package we had this time, however, included transfers. We were met promptly and whisked off to the Mercure.
We didn't check in until well after 11:30 PM but we were greeted warmly by the young man at reception. His English was excellent and he clearly went through everything that our package included. We were given exactly the room we had asked for.
The room, although small, was spotlessly clean. It is the perfect size for a couple. We actually prefer it that way. (It means less ankle biters hogging the pool and making noises.) We were very impressed with the thoughtful addition of a four plug international adaptor. Every hotel should have this. The wall mounted LCD TV was plenty big enough for the room. The air conditioning, which is so hard to get right in the tropics, was excellent.
The bathroom even had a view from the tub. There was also lots of room on the vanity to put toiletries. Although the water pressure in the shower could have been better, the bathroom itself, like the room, was meticulously clean.
We never usually eat in house when we visit Bali, much prefering to eat at local restaurants. This time, however, our package included breakfast. This was surprisingly good. There was a large Asian selection as well as a small selection of cereals, eggs to order and an omelet and pancake station. The service was excellent. Coffee and tea was always topped up and used plates taken away quickly.
The rooftop pool has the best view in town, although like the rooms, will need refurbishment soon in order to keep up the high standard. Level 4 pool level perfect for Kuta sunsets.
We started taking names at the start, of staff members who excelled in the performance of their duties. We gave up after a while though, as it quickly became apparent that the whole staff, from the guy who picked us up, the reception staff, the wait staff at the restaurant, to the blokes who cleaned the rooms so well every day, were top class.
The location can not be beaten. It as a short walk to Matahari supermarket, where you can pick up everything from tonic water to Tim Tam biscuits. The restaurants and shops in Poppies Lane 1 and 2 are just around the corner. The surf beach is just across the street. Taxis are easy to flag down just outside the hotel if you feel the need to explore further.
I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a good hotel, in a great location for a very reasonable price.
