“Great location”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

Stayed here for 4 nights for a friends 40th. On arrival check-in was smooth- no welcome drink or cool towels offered-but not a big concern. Our room was located on the 5th floor -H block,& although we occasionally heard scooters they did not interrupt our sleep. Beds comfortable & air-con just ok.
Rooms were large, clean & bathrooms were of a very good size- included both a separate shower & bath, linen was a little tired. Breakfast was ok, not a huge amount of variety and we felt could get monotonous after 4-5 days. We did see some hairs & a few crumbs in our bed on the 1st night but we had taken over a room that was previously occupied by friends (not there hair) so have put it down to a staff member with loose hair?
On the whole, the hotel is situated on a great location-near great restaurants, the pools were clean & refreshing & we got a very good room rate. It is situated near other hotels where you would be paying easily twice the room rate. The mini bar & pool fare is very affordable.
We sampled the spa for a couple massage and it was clean and very relaxing- again value for money.
I would consider staying again for a good price - especially if breakfast could be improved! Certainly worth considering for a Legian beach front location.

Room Tip: Near the pool areas

Booked through Expedia for an extended long weekend, Thursday till Tuesday. On arrival all good, shown to a nice large room, if anything a touch dated, but very clean and lovely, nice friendly staff with good helpful explanations and no ridiculous demands. Meaning they had no issues with taking the drinks out of the mini bar etc. In fact we went to the local Mini Mart and purchased our own provisions and they helped carry them to the room.
Breakfast supplied and we were given the vouchers for the main restaurant, which is open from 7:30am till around 10:30am. On the first day it had been raining in the morning and most of the outside area was quite wet, however in Bali this is not an issue and we had a great breakfast over looking the wonderful beach. Nice rolling breakers and just a gentle puff of breeze to be totally enchanting. The food was beautiful every morning of our stay. I am an addict of Papaya and when it is fresh with just a squeeze of lime, I am in heaven, well I was for the 5 days. Also the spread was large and if any areas were a bit suss, then the croissants were not that great, but fresh cooked omelettes were just gorgeous, 9 out of 10 for the breakfast.
I am led to believe there are 2 pools, but we only found one, not that we went looking for the other. This was lovely and at no times were we left looking for a lounge and it was not noisy and the lay out was great.
In summary we would highly recommend this hotel and hope that we have no difficulty in getting reservations on the near future, we are planning our next trip. A great spot and I think my highlight was just walking over the road for a nice swim at the beach before breakfast, just wonderful and relaxing.

Room Tip: We were close to the restaurant and could get the free WiFi most of the time, quit handy.

Have stayed here twice. Best location. You have a massive delicious buffet breakfast every morning at the restaurant overlooking the beach. The rooms are surrounded by beautiful gardens and are always clean. The rooms are cleaned everyday. Room service is quick and easy. Nice little balcony with each room, which has a table and chairs. Bathrooms are more than adequate and clean. Two beautiful large pools with plenty of lounges so you can usually get a seat. Can order food and drinks from the bar and sit at the pool and eat. One pool has a swim up bar. Excellent value, excellent location and all the staff are so friendly and always have a big smile on their faces for you. If there has been an issue, the staff have always dealt with it immediately. Went once as a family and once as a couple. Great for both.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are best, especially as I'm always running back to the hotel room as I forget...

I had stayed at the Kumala Pantai several times before, most recently in 2009. Back then, it was really nice, and excellent value. We just spent a week in Bail in Aug. 2013, and so we wanted to stay at this hotel again because we liked it so much in the past. The prices now are about twice as expensive as they were four years ago, and the quality of the hotel has gone down. However, I still really liked the hotel, but it isn't as nice as it used to be, and thus it's not nearly as good of a value as it was in the past. The Kumala Pantai has a lot more character than the numerous modern hotels that have sprouted up like mushrooms in recent years, but that character is kind of like a distinguished older gentleman with graying hair and some smile lines around the eyes. That is to say, the hotel is starting to show its age a little, but it's still very nice.

The Good: The hotel has a great location, right on 66 beach. You can't see the ocean from the rooms though, which are all pool view. The garden is gorgeous! The landscaping is delightful, and it exemplifies my vision of what a tropical paradise is like, with green plants, colorful flowers, and large trees everywhere. The landscaping gives it that Bali feeling, which is so lovely and peaceful. The two pools are very nice as well, and my kids had a great time swimming in them. They are kept clean, and there are plenty of lounge chairs for everyone; we didn't have any trouble getting a place by the pool, even though the hotel was at full occupancy while we were there. The rooms also have a nice atmosphere to them, and are more in the old Bali style. The A/C worked great, they are clean, and the marble floors and teak wood furniture gives it a touch of luxury. The balconies are large, and are great to sit on while enjoying a morning coffee or an afternoon drink. The breakfast was good, as is the food at the Ristorante Italia at the front of the hotel.

The Bad: The beds are a little old, and not as comfortable as I remember they used to be. We had a room with twin beds, and the one I slept on broke (the carved wooden bed frame came apart so that one corner was sitting lower than the others) two times while I was there. To their credit, the engineering dept. came immediately and fixed it both times, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place. Our first impression upon arrival was disappointment because it wasn't as good as we remembered, but our opinion improved a lot during our stay as the hotel's charms impressed us. The service was generally just average- some of the staff were really friendly, but others were not, particularly the wait staff during breakfast. My wife in particular commented on this- she is Indonesian and she was not treated as well as I was. Our experience was that I received better service than she did (I am caucasian).

I would stay here again, and would still recommend it to friends.

First time staying at Kumala and will likely returned. Not sure why people complain about breakfast as I thought it was delicious and had a good selection. Great location as you can watch people surf when having breakfast. We didn't spend much time in the hotel however all staff and security where very friendly. The pools were lovely and i was very impressed with the garden. Bed was a little uncomfortable however it didn't concern us. Overall a lovely place for a mid range stay. .

Our Last night in Bali and knew of this Italian restaurant close to our accommodation (Puri Raja) from previous visit to bali. Open air restaurant right on the beach front is what Bali is all about.
We had...
Entrees - Sepie con Piselli (squid and tomato salad) and Carpaccio Di Polpi (chicken salad)
Mains - tagliata (meat) and tagliatelle salsiccio (pasta with sliced Italian sausage) and a side of mixed salad.
All very fresh and tasty italian dishes which even Nonna would be happy to eat.
The live music was very entertaining and not straining! Good Italian food at an adorable price.

We chose this hotel for its location and in that respect it didn't disappoint. We stayed in SG block on first floor overlooking the pool. Rooms were clean and serviced promptly. Breakfast setting is wonderful and there is a great choice of food. Both pools are huge but there aren't many umbrellas. The pool towels were very old and we weren't allowed to take them to the beach so we bought some from the markets for about $4 each. The pavements were very slippery after rain so be careful. Massages at the spa were great and reasonably priced for a hotel. Overall a decent hotel for location and price :)
