Went here itch family for an wedding anniversary dinner. Restaurant looked beautiful, atmosphere was element and romantic. Good start - but food was not fresh, seafood had a bad smell and therefore could not be eaten, choice very limited and there were RATS everywhere running under our feet, through the tables and chairs, not one not two but many. They even ran up the leg of a patron who in turn screamed the place down - don't blame her. Because of the rat situation no matter how pretty it looked I will not be back

Our sincere apologies regarding both of these problems.

Regarding the bad seafood served to you that day in December, we followed up right away, as this was a serious incident that we did not ever want repeated. The offending barramundi had just arrived that morning, and a wrong assumption was made in the kitchen. We very much regret what happened.

Regarding rats, tropical South Bali is undergoing very rapid and unplanned urbanisation, and Kuta is at the centre of all this. There is no sewage system as yet (it's going in now, throughout south Bali) - only septics, and storm drains under sidewalks. Rats therefore are everywhere, and we are very much aware that when they are visible to our guests it might seem that nothing is being done about it. However, we constantly use all known methods to minimise the problem, and pay scrupulous attention to hygiene throughout our restaurant and kitchens at all times.
Poppies has been a garden oasis in the centre of concrete Kuta since 1973. Unfortunately, just as our guests do, the town's rats also find our gardens attractive, despite our efforts to discourage them. Even as we eliminate the ones on our property, more can run straight in from next door or from the lane in a few seconds. Rats unfortunately have the freedom of the city.

We would like to point out that since your visit to Poppies more than 2 months ago, we have had great success in getting rid of the problem, and there have been no further complaints on the subject.

“great hole in the wall”

This was a great restaurant that was recommended to us. It was traditional Indonesian food and it was beautiful! Great service, lovely interior (its half outside) and even has free wifi. I had the vegetarian curry with brown rice and garlic bread - amazing! It is down poppies lane 2 almost near the end (when coming from the beach) on the LHS.

“Dissapointing!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2013 via mobile

We were there 22 Jan for lunch. Ordered drinks and an imported steak with pepper sauce n piccata Milanese. Took one look at it n we knew it is horrible. Took a bite n called for waitress to send it to the kitchen. We been here several times n wanted to make our last lunch out special but we were dissapointed. Spoke to manager n also chef n chef blamed the trainees for not doing it well. What crap! The chef shld teach them. We told them we will come again next time n hope things will change for the better. We were not charged for tthe food.

Dear Kuntum,
Thank you for letting us know about this, and please accept our apologies.
Our Chef acknowledges the unfortunate facts that you present, and has taken steps to try to avoid any recurrence. By mentioning his staff he was only offering some kind of explanation as to why things went wrong, and he certainly accepts overall responsibility for their shortcomings on the day.
In addition, he says that he apologised to you and offered to cook you something else instead. As you declined this, no charge was made for your food. As you expressed an intention to return to Poppies Restaurant, he also invited you to let him know ahead of your next visit, so that he could prepare something special for you.
Following his apologies, explanations, offer to replace substandard dishes, offer to present something special next time, and cancellation of charges, apparently you volunteered that you would not be taking this matter any further by reporting it in the media or on the internet.
In any event we hope you will give us another chance in the near future.

Dear Ema W,
We sincerely apologise for this state of affairs, and we have taken serious steps to avoid a repeat. It is no excuse whatsoever, and quite paradoxical, but it is worth mentioning that maintaining proper service in a restaurant is most difficult when only a couple of tables are occupied.
We are trying to ensure that poor service will not be a feature of Poppies Restaurant in the future.
