“Superb resort: villa was beautiful, staff was truly outstanding.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2011

My wife and I spent 5 days at the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay. The resort is lovely, the Villa (we had an ocean front villa) was airy, private and beautifully appointed, but what was truly exceptional was the service. From the manager to the buggy drivers to the cleaning crews we were made to feel special. We travel quite a bit for leisure and always stay in luxury hotels. This is one of the best.

We stayed at FS Jimbaran Bay early October 2010 for five days, and the trip was a spur of the moment kind of thing. We have stayed in Bali before a number of times, usually in the Nusa Dua area, so we wanted to try something else.
I wasn’t really sure about the location of the FS at Jimbaran Bay, as it is located close to the airport yet quite far away from the shopping and dining areas at Seminyak. In the end my initial feeling was right: we always had to take long taxi rides to do some shopping or find some evening atmosphere. With the heavy traffic in Bali nowadays, this is quite tiring. While at the pool, I found myself counting the planes taking off and landing.
Jimbaran Bay is a long and big beach, but nothing special or beautiful. The main interest is the seafood restaurants on the beach, which we tried once.
The resort is large and built in typical Balinese style on terraces overlooking one corner of the bay. Each villa has its own plunge pool, a typical Balinese entrance with double door, with on one side the bedroom and bathroom and an open lounge area on the other. All are decorated in a mix of traditional Balinese/Indonesian (with heavy wood accents) and classic resort hotel style. While the villas are definitely well equipped and well maintained, one gets the feeling the resort has aged. The room inside is dark.
Privacy inside the villa is compromised by the fact that the villa on the higher terrace behind looks right into the one beneath.
As the plunge pool is quite small, we spent most of the time in one of the two swimming pools. There were few other people around the pool.
Service in the resort is excellent, as one would expect from a FS.
The only real downside of the resort in my view was the food. While they go to great lengths to provide quality as well as quantity (especially the breakfast), the food in general is dull and lacks imagination. None of the restaurants are air-conditioned, so very traditional but typical ‘hotel-style’ Italian pastas served for dinner in a humid tropical environment just doesn’t cut it. There is a small Indonesian restaurant tucked away in an old reconstructed colonial house with water pond to break that mood, but the choice of dishes was very small. We also tried PJ, which was equally a disappointment. The food and drink prices are also expensive, but going out is a headache because of the distance to travel. We tried a small Australian run restaurant in the Seminyak area, and the dishes were refreshing compared with the dull and heavy cuisine of FS, and at a fraction of the cost.
If one is looking for ambience at night, there is none. Either everybody is in his villa or has left the hotel.
This is definitely a quality hotel and service is top notch, but it is in need of some new ideas. This resort was supposedly voted one of the best in the world. It didn’t leave me with any lasting impression.

I have stayed at a number of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts so far, so it is difficult to write something new that I have not already written one way or another.
The service at the Jimbaran Bay resort is consisdently at highest standards and in line with what you would expect of the chain. From the first greeting when the driver collects you at the airport to the drop off on your way to the next destination, you are made to feel you are the only guest and absolute focus - with an all natural service attitude that is not overdone or acted. Absolutely unintrusive but going the extra mile at any given moment. What I would specifically like to comment is the 'human' edge which I have seen in many staff. You felt like being a guest at a friends home who was keen to make your stay special and always happy to share ideas to make your stay even more special. Without some of the little hints when the best time to visit a momument is or what the best outside restaurants are for a genuine Bali feeling, the holiday would have lacked 'spice'.
The Resort itself is amazing. The pictures speak for themselves. Although I have been to FS resorts where the villas are further apart that in this one, it did not feel cramped. You had maximum privacy without really seeing or hearing anyone else when outside the common areas. I felt so at home, most of the time I did not even bother leaving the villa. Just meandering between open living area, sun deck and private pool was the perfect slow down from a hectic life. The walks between the villas on the grounds had a bit of flair like a mediterranean village, the walks on the beach along the cliffs are spectacular. The most charming touch are the 'public' pavillions along the shore line which can be set up for a private dinner or just as a breaking point during a walk along the sea front with a loved one. Some pavillions have hidden steps down to the water and at certain times expose a tiny private beach. An absolute dream.
And for those who can never really get away from it all: the hotel has the cheapest wifi I have ever seen in a property this category.

Wonderful! We had a exquisite time at the four seasons Jimbaran. Rooms are gorgeous, as well as the setting, service is impeccable.
One thing about the breakfast though for which the waiting was too long and the food was not as good as expected.
We had dinner one night in the same restaurant as where the breakfast takes place and the food was not good either.
I think you can say that food is really average there but the setting and the rooms really helps to forget it!!

This was our second trip to The Four Seasons in Bali. We stayed this time in one of the residence villas and we loved it. We had a huge lap pool - a live in butler. The villa was massive and had amazing gardens with stunning ponds. Even though we have two small children, they child proofed everything for us.

The Four Seasons style and service is always flawless and the staff are very well trained. They know it's the little touches that matter from cleaning your sunglasses by the pool to knowng all their guests by name.

The food, whilst expensive, is beautiful and the amazing theme nights they put on like Beds on the Beach are fantastic.

There is a great range of sporting activites- yoga at 7 am on the top of the cliff listening to the sea was a highlight and the PT in the gym offered great free boot camps. The tennis courts are excellent and we loved the spa. There was a great spa deal on and we had a treatment almost every day.

The kids club is only really suited to children under 6/7 , however, it is the best kids club my kids have been to. It is a great range of toys and alovely little pool. They do arts , crafts and cultral things with the children. There is free food for the kids in the hotel and they really love kids.

The only down side was the beach and the sea!

We will be back!

The Hotel lies on top of the southern end of Jimbaran Bay, nested into an amazing garden with a very nice view on the sea. All rooms are private villas with a private pool, seperate lounge area and the main bed- and bathroom. Though the hotel has seen some years, the architecture is very cosy and the rooms are well equipped and you never have the impression of being in an "old" hotel.

The general areas like lobby, bar, beach, pool and restaurants are nicely decorated in balinese style and are in general very comfortable. Food is delicious and the resorts offer several options with the Terrace Restaurant, Warung Mie and PJ's, my favourite being clearly Warung Mie wth an exceptional local cuisine. Try the duck balinese style or enjoy the Satay or Curry Menus on special days, it's really worth it.

The staff is in general very kind and helpful. Their english knowledge could (maybe should) be better but you get used to it and it has some "charme". When asking something make sure that they really understood what you mean, to avoid later surprises.

The SPA is nice, but could be better. Compared to other SPA's of that kind of luxury Hotels a major investment in the facilities would be necessary. The treatments are very good though but also very expensive.

Some things that could be negative:
- Breakfast often takes quite a while - we coulnd't figure out why. Maybe because it's ordered on menu, even if included in your room rate. So take a bit of passion.
- The premise is quite vaste, but you can walk all around, if not take a buggy, but sometimes you'll have to wait.
- The sea has high and low tides and the sea basically disappears during low tides, letting appear some corals and stones close to the beach. Some areas are therefore also not open for swimming (basically the ones in front of the hotel) but is's not really a problem, you can get easily into the water. Be aware though of jellyfish.
- All in all the Hotel is very expensive and be aware of some really amazingly overprized features. For example transportation to the airport upon departure. The hotel charges 35USD + 21% service charge/taxes, which are around 500'000 Rupies. We took a cab and paid....60'000. This is senseless overprizing. Other example SPA Treatments (60') are above 1 million IDR per person, when we paid 700'000 for two persons for two hours somewhere else. Check prices!

Finally the absolute DO when your at Jimbaran. Take a stroll at night along the beach and have dinner at one of the seafood restaurants 15 minutes off the hotel sitting on the beach and wathing Jimbaran Bay. The food is amazing, fresh and very tasty. Candles will guite you - you won't miss it.

All in all we were satisfied and felt very comfortable at the Four Seasons. We would certainly come back!

Room Tip: Ask for Ocean View Rooms, the upgrade is often free upon availability. If not, the closer to the bea...

We stayed 4 days at the 4 Seasons and were shocked by the very bad food.

@ breakfast one sausage was fully BLACK on one side but nevertheless put on a plate - black side under, how stupid can you be! Bacon was cooked by a person that must hate the product as well as THE people that eat it. It was extremely overcooked, dry and without taste. My little daughter joked that plastic tastes better. We paid 30+ bucks per head for this assault on our health.

@ Lunch we ordered a pizza. Arrogantly, the hotel claims in its food menu to "serve the very best pizza in Bali". What a sick joke. The best pizza from an evil perspective I assume. There was approximately 1cm of cheese on the pizza. Consequently, the pizza was soaking wet, as a sponge. I honestly think it would have caused my death if I had eaten the whole thing.
@Dinner I had fish with wok fried veggies. The fish was dry and the veggies had a funny taste. Back in the cottage I had to vomit it all out so my tastebuds had indeed warned me that I ate someting bad!

The place itself is nice, except for the close look at the airstrip night and day that we found quite unusual for a high end beach resort.

We paid USD 3,350 for 3 nights in a standard cottage including F&B for 1 adult and two children. There are many much better and newer resorts that are much cheaper in Bali.

Contrary to these progressive price levels, the working hours for the hotel staff were medieval. After leaving dinner at 10 PM you saw the same waitresses at breakfast, some of them mothers of young children too. I velt very bad about that and it certainly spoiled our pleasure.

There was an older western man rushing from restaurant to reception back and forth with an obsession for staff attendance records. That was also a strange experience to see him being busy with nothing (wages are very low in Indonesia) but not even noticing his guests let alone giving them attention. Given his authoritive approach of the friendly but timid staff, I think it was some sort of manager, but it was kind of fun watching his interaction with his staff.

I was so glad that I booked some other hotels as well, it was not pleasant @ 4 Seasons. Not at all.
