Kupu Kupu Jimbaran & Bamboo Spa by L'Occitane
Ranked #12 of 62 Hotels in Jimbaran
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 20, 2011

The hotel room was impressive at first - we had our own "villa", which had two floors, and a bath tub in the middle of the floor. However, the layout of the room was not very convenient. For example, the bathroom is on the ground floor and the bed is on the first floor. Going to the bathroom at night was a pain - and sometimes dangerous, given that the light switches were also inconveniently located (my husband hurt himself walking down the stairs at night...)
The location is also not great. The best thing going for it is that it is near the Southern fish warung (8 min walk from hotel). The Jimbaran beach is also 8 min walk and is a nice calm beach, but nothing spectacular. If you want to just lie on a beach with white sand and not care about having any waves, then it is a good place. Otherwise, there is NOTHING nearby. Going to Kuta or Seminyak is not as close as it may seem on the map since there is the airport in the middle and the traffic is always a disaster. It can take about 30 minutes to go to Kuta from our hotel by taxi.

There is a pretty pool which is shared by all the guests in the villa. It is very narrow and long so there isn't much room for people to swim (unless if you are the only one in the pool).

The breakfast was rather uninspired and the room service menu was extremely boring (though not bad and the service was always very very nice. There was not a single Indonesian/Balinese dish).

There is a very nice spa on the first floor. I had a fantastic massage. The therapist was very nice and skilled. However...65USD is a bit much no? That is NYC prices...Also, I can hear the motor bikes and construction noise during my entire massage so it wasn't totally relaxing.

The staff were all very nice and courteous so we have no complaints whatsoever about the service. The people were great! However, I would not categorize this as a 5 star hotel. and the location is far from ideal.

Dear Romyromyromy,

On behalf of the Kupu-Kupu Jimbaran, I would like to apologize if your experience with us did not meet the standards you were expecting. I can assure you that we are doing our best in terms of service, comfort and pricing to ensure our guests a memorable stay in Bali.

You write that your husband hurt himself while going to the bathroom and I am terribly sorry about this accident. Could you give me more details about what happened? It is true that the position of the switches was a problem and we are currently fixing this issue with our engineers. The bathroom and the bed are in different floors in half our rooms, while in the other half they both are on the lower floor. Whenever possible, we now always give our guests the possibility to choose the type of room they want.

Regarding the rest of your comment, I would like to point out the following:

- You are right to say that the location of the Kupu-Kupu Jimbaran may not be interesting for everyone, especially for those mostly interested in the partying/dining scene on Kuta and Seminyak (approximately 30 minutes by car). However, for families or couples looking for a more relaxed holiday near the beach, I believe our location is perfect. I shall also remind you that we are located only 15 minutes from the airport.

- Regarding the massage you enjoyed in our Bamboo Spa, I know that our prices are in line with those of similar luxury establishments in Nusa Dua. All our masseuses have been trained and certified by "L'Occitane en Provence" from France and we only use their products. I have just spoken with the Spa manager concerning the noise and it turns out there is one room which needs to be isolated from the outside. Until the work is finished, I will not allow any massage in this particular room.

- Regarding the food, I regret that you didn't fully appreciate the variety of our menu because our Belgian Chef Yehudi puts a lot of time and dedication into his work. In case you would like to give us another try, you should know that the menu is constantly changing and that it now features some Indonesian specialties. In November 2011 for instance, we have Balinese Seafood Salad, Ambengan Soup, Bebek Betutu and also Ayam Taliwang from Lombok.

Again, thank you for your comment about our hotel. You gave us a very interesting, detailed feedback that really helped us improve all our products.

All the best,

The Management

Kupu Kupu Jimbaran is truly one of the best places to stay in Bali. The rooms are beautiful, very friendly staff ... there is hardly any reason to complain. I and my husband traveled in month of July,2011 and enjoyed allot our stay there . we definitely come again and stay here only .

My partner and I stayed at Kupu Kupu in June, and we have a real mixed review about this new hotel. Let me start by saying there is nothing wrong with Kupu Kupu, the staff are all lovely and the rooms are clean.

They have really tried to make it look contemporary and boutique but their is so much that is not finished. The poor craftsmanship and lazy paint jobs throughout the rooms are distracting. It is hard to make a hotel have a look of high quality when the finish is terrible.

The foyer it simple, and small. What you would expect for a boutique hotel. The rest of the ground floor is occupied with shops, most aren't finished. The lift to the upper floor (where all the rooms are) is tiny and awkward, it looks like an old service lift.

The most irritating thing about Kupu Kupu is that it is clearly not ready to function as a hotel yet. The builders start very early in the morning and are working all day, which is literally below our balcony. While sitting in your room in the middle of the day, even will all the doors closed you can hear constant hammering.

The pool area is worse, I tried to relax and read my book their but there are about 30 workers roaming around constantly, using chainsaws and hammering, all rushing around to get things finished. There is no service around the pool, if you would like a drink of water or something to eat then you have wonder down to the shops below and arrange it yourself. There is an area by the pool which I assume will be a bar in the future, but nothing has been started yet. I found myself visiting my parents at the intercontinental every day just to get some piece and quite.

In a years time Kupu Kupu will be a great hotel, but today it feels like your staying in a building site.

Dear ydun2170,

Thank you for your feedback. As you mention throughout your review, you visited Kupu-Kupu Jimbaran just after it opened, and it is correct to say that some of the finishing had not be done at the time. For that reason, all clients who visited us then received a discounted rate. Nevertheless, we sincerely apologize for all the inconveniences you encountered during your stay with us.

Let me assure you that we are now fully operational and we no longer require any additional work except for routine maintenance.

Also, I am glad to inform you we are currently implementing food and beverage service in the swimming pool area. You can order from any of our restaurants located in the Jimbaran Corner (Topeng, Chocolate Café).

If you would like to visit us again, we would be very pleased to have you again to show you that the disappointing standards you experienced during your stay are not ordinary.

Thanks again for your comment,

All the best,

The Management

We stayed at Kupu Kupu Jimbaran for 10 nights (half price deal) and it was fantastic. I would like to thank all the staff for looking after us so well. There were a few rooms that needed finishing, but the hotel is definitely ready for guests and the only noises that disturbed us were local dogs and cockerels (and we got used to those very quickly)! The rooms are lovely, comfortable and spotless, and the unending supply of bottled water and the mosquito repellent plug-in were welcome touches. They are rather dark, but that doesn’t seem unusual in Bali. Our room faced the back of the hotel which was unfortunately mostly a view of the car park (full of scooters of course, as Bali is teeming with them!), but a birdseye view of the small local temple was interesting. The staff are extremely friendly and eager to please, and they were happy to organise cars etc. for us and give us any help or advice we needed. The hotel itself is in a small retail complex called 'Jimbaran Corner' so there are a few well-to-do shops on site, plus a couple of excellent restaurants (one belonging to the hotel) and a cafe (also for breakfast) at English prices. Wine is expensive in Bali generally, but by the end of our holiday the hotel had added one of the two local wines (Hatten Rose) to the menu at a reasonable price. Breakfast is a little noisy as the cafe fronts on to the road, but I enjoyed the invigoration of having the hustle and bustle (and buzzing of all the scooters) as a backdrop to the excellent breakfasts. Feel free to deviate from the menu and ask for whatever you want. The L'Occitane spa is perfect although again it's at English prices (although we stayed long over the advertised duration of the treatments). The L'Occitane products in the room are from bottles used by previous guests, and they're not in a form which is easy to use, so disappointingly we didn't bother. The hotel pool is long but narrow and I think with only a few guests it could be too cramped to swim with others (it’s perhaps only 8ft wide). From what we saw, many hotels only had small pools, so I don’t think it’s unusual. At the time we stayed, there was nothing organised for having drinks at the pool, but they accommodated our requests. The hotel has a ‘beach club’ which started to open during our stay. The magnificent beach is only 5 mins walk away, but the staff were very pleased to use their buggy to drive us to their part of the beach, which is pleasingly near (not too near!) the famous beach barbeque cafes. At the time they only had two sun loungers, but I would expect they will have more by now as demand would have increased. Jimbaran itself is an excellent location. It’s nothing like the awfully oppressive Kuta/Legian/Seminyak area, it feels much more normal and less touristy. There are still enough options for food in the evening (I would recommend Asam Garam at Villa Balquisse opposite the entrance to the Intercontinental hotel - excellent food and reasonably priced). Traffic near the airport is terrible and it can take a while to get about, but any of the hotels in the areas I mentioned would suffer too. The hotel is 15 mins from the airport (in fact you can see the runway from Jimbaran beach which is a novelty!). Despite the traffic, we still managed to get out and explore just about every bit of the island. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, for the hotel itself and its location. You won’t regret choosing this hotel. Perfection!

We stayed at this property for two nights in April 2011. They were in their "soft opening" stage so things were not quite settled down from construction.

The property is located on a busy road, approximately 15 minutes from the airport. From the exterior, the property is underwhelming. There are no grounds to speak of.

The staff are welcoming and eager to please.

The breakfast was excellant, though a little noisy due to traffic and we had one of the best meals of our extended trip in SE Asia in the main dining room which was in the process of opening during our stay.

We enjoyed an excellent massage in their delightful spa.

Free wi fi is advertised in the rooms but was not available when we were there. It is available in the restaurants.

There were a number of issues, some minor and some significant that we brought to the attention of management.

We look forward to hearing whether the changes have been incorporated into the property.

For starters, having glass shampoo and conditioner bottles in the walk-in shower makes little sense to us.

The interior design of the rooms looked fabulous, but was not particularly practical. The lights by the beds were hopeless for those wanting to read, and even though there was a upper level / mezzanine space in the room, there is no where to sit and relax if the weather is not cooperative, (which it wasn't during our stay).

A larger issue is the fundamental design of the hotel rooms which are all located on the upper level of the development, (the lower levels being a mixture of retail, spa and restaurants).

The hotel was not busy when we were there, yet we noticed a tremendous amount of noise transmission between the rooms, and from the canyon effect of the exterior design. We were more than aware when other guests arrived on the room level late at night. I'm not sure how this issue can be resolved.

We are hesitant to pass judgement on this property as it is in its very early days. For those who want more detail, feel free to contact us.

Dear Realitychex,

Thank your for your review of Kupu Kupu Jimbaran, it is very useful for us in order to improve our service continually. It is true that at the time of your visit, in April 2011, the hotel had just opened on a trial mode. For this particular reason, our guests were offered promotional rates.

First of all, I would like to point out some of the changes we have made since April:
The WIFI is now available in all of the hotel premises, free of charge, as well as in all our restaurants (Topeng, Chocolate Café, Jimbaran Beach Club, Oishi Tei).
Also, we have increased the intensity of the lighting in the rooms, and following your comment, we will reconsider the organization of the mezzanine room to facilitate reading.

Regarding the noise from rooms to rooms and from the exterior to the rooms, it has rarely been mentioned to us and we should investigate whether this is a recurring event or not. If so, we will make our best to stop this from happening.

If you would like more information about the changes made in our hotel, please do not hesitate to contact me by email and I will be more than happy to answer you.

All the best,

The Management
