Jimbaran beach is carpeted with a myriad of seafood restaurants, many of which look every bit a dodgy as the area's reputation suggests.

Having visited Menega on our first pass a few evenings ago, we decided to stroll along the array of restaurants and see if any took our fancy. Lei Lei was by far the cleanest appearing of those we past, and the seafood was very fresh <if not still alive and kicking>.

Menus were presented quickly and orders placed by 9:00. Drinks delivered and food took not more than 30 mins to arrive. A beautiful 1kg Red Snapper was filleted and grilled perfectly to our taste, accompanied by 2kg of Tiger Prawns grilled and bathed in a garlic butter sauce. Calamari was disappointing, but you can't win 'em all.

Including beers and other drinks bill totalled IDR620k, which for four adults we thought was pretty good for more seafood than we could [should have] consumed.

Menega seems to have far more people, but for my money Lei Lei is the best value.

While staying at the Intercontinental as saw there were numerous restaurants right on the beach next to us. But how to choose. Some were crowded, others nearly empty. And the menus were all similar. There are not any obvious ways to differentiate.

Jimbaran being an active fishing village, we decided to see what the fishes had to say about the issue. So we trudged up the beach and cut through the first of the open air restaurants to the street side. After walking up and down strip of 20 or so seafood restaurants, it was clear there were major differences. Many places had fish that did not look to fresh. Other places were not terribly clean.

Lei lei had VERY fresh fish, the facilities seemed clean, and to pièce de résistance: There was a local woman there haggling for some fish to take home. We were sold.

Gosh, our salesperson/waiter helped us pick out some fish. A few seconds later it was straight from the scales to the kitchen. Meanwhile, we headed out to get seated. Gosh got us a great seat -- though frankly that was easy to do, as almost all of the seating on the beach has a great view of the crashing waves.

A few minutes later, our drinks arrived, and they lit a couple of oil lamps on the table. It was time for us to enjoy a beautiful Bali sunset along with some local beer (Bintang).

The fish, and in our case crab, came along with some local greens, fresh sauces and garlic, a a big steamer of rice. It was all delicious.

The great view, food, and service did come at a price. And that price was a fraction of what the meal at the hotel would have been! Went back the next night as well. Unfortunately, that was our last night in town. But we will return at our next opportunity.

Lei lei is one of the restaurants you can find along the coast in Jimbaran (turning left from Intercontinental Hotel). We decided to eat something out cause we were told that "food at the beach is delicious".
Well, I can say a lot but "delicious" is the last thing we had on our minds while eating the food in Lei Lei.
Everything was literally overgrilled. Prawns must have exploded on the grill as we couldn't find a single piece of meat inside. Fish, burnt completely.
The souce, that covered every little bit of fish, prawns etc., killed the taste.
Rice was cold and sticky.
IT AGES SINCE WE HAVE EATEN SUCH TASTELESS FOOD.

And I personally hate waiters who think they are so intelligent that they can overcharge the customers. The one who served us just brought less change than he should have.
AVOID.
