“Too many frenchies?”
Reviewed March 30, 2012

Ok I will admit I am also partly one, however it feels weird to come all the way to Indonesia to hear Parisians talking next to you as if you were in the French Riviera. When I arrived at Balangan, initially to go to Flowerbud next door, I saw the ugliest building ever built in Bali, or so I thought. They have a few more close to Uluwatu. Some big grey square concrete or brick structures with absolutely no taste or anything Balinese to it. Unfortunately, this is where we ended up staying, since all their new rooms were in that building. The bungalows were already booked. We soon realize they had forgotten to supply us with towels and toilet paper. The service seemed already suspect before that. When I decided to book a room for the night, the reception lady shouted at me "can't you see I'm busy sir!".... Then when I finally spoke to her and asked her to show me the room one more time ( we had come earlier but looked around in the meantime), she yelled again: "You saw the room already sir!!"... I already had my dose of poor service and unprofessional-ism for the day ( see my flowerbud review) so I didn't want to raise my voice in return. I just said, "sorry but I saw so many rooms today I can't remember". Now the pool area: It's too crammed. The bungalows are overlooking the pools, the restaurant as well, and you feel as if everyone is watching everyone else, a feeling I didn't get in any other place I stayed at in Bali. Could it be because I was surrounded by frenchies, or was it the fact they didn't feel comfortable in or by the pool either? The upside is, the rooms are not expensive (300,000 roopia) but breakfast is not included. As for the food it's better than at Flowerbud, but nothing out of the ordinary.

The beach area now looks like the old Dreamland. All the warungs have moved to Balangan. Now Balangan feels like what Dreamland used to be. Unfortunately the lack of sewage system means a lot of that used and dirty water gets thrown in the ocean, and all the plastic trashes are burned next to the beach, with the toxic fume for breakfast. The upside is, for a surfer, Balangan gets great quality waves and as long as the plastic trashes from Java (The Balinese blame Java but who knows where it comes from?) are not floating around in the lineup, it's still a great place to be.

We stayed in this place for 2 nights, august 2011. Yes it is the high-season, but 400.000 IDR for a room (after talking it down from 450.000) for a very simple room in the story block in the back, breakfast not included, simple room, no charm what so ever, is just not what we enjoy. We were very disappointed with the unfriendly, western, instead of Balinese service. Then there were the 'service people' supposedly working for the hotel. They were nothing but husslers that tried to be friendly, but were only after you money, which is not uncommon, but their false and aggressive way was. If you are a good surfer and don't mind to pay a little extra, this place will do. It is close to the beach and the restaurant and pool are nice. We will however not come back here.

On the outside, this place looks good, charming bungalows that surround a pretty little pool with a cafe attached to it. But don't be fooled! The things that make a lodging experience worth the stay was pretty much non existent. I can firmly say we hated our stay at the Balangan Sea View Bungalow.

Inside the bungalows:
Super simple, bare bones, no personality. Bed mosquito nets were dirty and the bedding/mattress/pillows were disgusting--smelled like a dirty wet mop. We couldn't bare the smell and ended up sleeping on our towels.

Bathroom:
The smell of bug spray was so strong we could taste it. We didn't mind the cold water or how open it was to the outside elements but the dark stones in the bathroom were hiding more than dirt. There were huge cockroaches roaming the bathroom.

Cafe:
Food was ok, nothing special. Breakfast not included.

Wifi:
Did not work.

Service:
Not the friendliest bunch here. We didn't feel welcomed, no greetings, not a speck of service. When we asked to use their phone for a local call (since their public telephone was broken and wifi didn't work for skype) they charged us for making a local 4 minute call.

We felt that this place was only interested in collecting our money. Sure the location is nice, but the overall experience was so foul that the spiciest blend of sambal couldn't cover it up.

Room Tip: Building next to bungalows have A/C and indoor bathroom.

Stayed 2 nights at Balangan Sea View Bungalows. We stayed in the $60 bungalow which was perfect for a family of 4. The 2 kids slept upstairs while we had the bedroom and verandah downstairs. The kids thought it was fun walking through the cow paddocks at the back to get to the secluded beach. The swimming pool was great.

A quick scroll down through the reviews and pics here and I realise that the Balangan Sea View Bungalows has has a major facelift recently. It's not just bungalows now. There's a large 2 story block of fan rooms, and there are aircon rooms above the front restaurant.

If you're a confident surfer, Balangan Beach is a great place to be. The rooms are big and clean and are reasonably priced (RP325,000 in high season) for the quality. They come with towels and they're cleaned every day.

The bungalows, on the other hand, seem expensive. If you go to the guest house next-door they have (3) gorgeous round bungalows with private gardens and sitting areas at a similar price. The ones at Balangan Sea View are crowded around the pool.

If you're not a surfer, there's not much reason for you to be at Balangan Beach. It's not a very good swimming beach and it's miles from anywhere else. That means that the transportation guys just outside the door have a monopoly and will gouge you for any trip, and the food at Balangan Sea View Bungalow and the warungs on the beach is average quality, premium price, but you don't have much of a choice.

This isn't a bad place to stay if you want to be at Balangan Beach... but do you want to be at Balangan Beach?

Take enough cash to cover your expenses. They don't take cards and there's no ATM or money changer nearby.

Room Tip: Aircon rooms and bungalows don't seem as nice as the non-aircon ones.

If you are looking for an American resort-style vacation, stay at La Joya at Balangan Beach. Seaview is NOT the place for you. But if you are looking for a quiet, rustic, more cultural experience, This place is great. Downside: (1) You share a bungalow AND a bathroom ( one single room downstairs and a double room ( 2 twins) upstairs. I was the only female to share a BR with my fiance and 2 20 something males. AND no hot water (2) the bungalows are really "Huts" - thatched roof and seagrass walls - so if you are downstairs, your pillow is about 5 feet from the toilet behind the 'wall' and you can hear everything. (3) your walk to the beach consists of a 100 yard hike through a cow field, dodging cow patties. Upside: (1) you get to walk through a cow field and listen to the cows, while enjoying the most spectacular view in Bali (2) it is NOT filled with Americans, mostly australians & eurpeans (3) Almost every body ( male and female, old and young) has wash boards abs, as this is a surfing location and home of Kima Surf Camp. (4) you are in a rural area so there is plenty of walking, running, scootering that you can do with nature - no pushy chachki sellers, cheap food on the beach, easy ability to walk around the point to Dreamland at low tide. I would stay here again, but it is a bit like camping. We are 40 something executives that prefer a true experience on vacation. The guests were intelligent and well-traveled, there is a very nice outdoor dining area where folks congregate to share surf & travel stories, Kima Surf camp is an excellent host if you want a place to stay and a surf guide or lessons ( must sign up with them separately). And most importantly, Balangan beach has not yet been taken over by the resorts.

Room Tip: Email or call and MAKE SURE that there will be no other guests in your bungalow. The indonesian way...

Steyed there for 5 nights during April 2011:
+ Nice view
+ Very good surf sport 10mn by walk (down the cliff, easy way)
+ Reasonable pricing if free (good a cpl. bungalow by my own for 40 USD)
+ Tsunami Safe :)
+ Good breakfast & Dinner for reasonable pricing
+ Friendly staff

--- Wanted to stay there again a week later then the chief told me: "We never made this pricing you said.."
- Far away from everthing, small Supermarket 2min with motorcycle, ATM 10 min.

By the way; They have electricity, lights and fan. Toilets are behind each bungalow - Must like this...
