Despite our 1night only stay at Puri Bayu, it was a tremendous experience!
Dewi was a fantastic host in which she provided us with great help during our stay there. From getting us rental bikes and sent directly to the guesthouse, to helping us source for a great and honest driver, as we're heading to our next destination after Ubud.

We will definitely be back!

Puri Bayu guesthouse was an awesome gem we came across! The room was quiet, clean, and absolutely lovely! When we return to Bali, we will definately be staying here. The two adjoining rooms were spacious and a wonderful place to relax and unwind!

Before going to Bali, we booked another guest house which is located in Jalan Bisma - the Bali Moon guest house. Unfortunately, water system of the booked room was down and the staff only informed us when we reached Ubud there, as we had spent 2 nights in Kuta. He recommended us to stay in Ina Inn and we accepted it. However, the stay was not so comfortable and we were shocked with the additional 10% tax when checked out.
Puri Bayu guest house was accidentally found by us. It is located at the other side of the road with other guest houses. The owner, Dewi invited us to have a look on the rooms. It was 100 times more beautiful and comfortable than the previous guest house! We chose to stay in the lower room. I like the half open bath room with bath tub, in which u can enjoy sunlight during the day and see the stars in the sky at night. The view was great as it is located next to paddy field. At night we went upstairs as upper room was unoccupied, sat on the wide chair, and enjoyed the cold night breeze.
The breakfast was nice, presentable and tasty. We had fruits as appetizer, and green pancake was served then.
Not forget the dog, Brandy who can swim!Dewi's husband said that Brandy will spend 10 minutes everyday immersed in the small river in front of Puri Bayu GH to cool down her body.

All are memorable and unforgettable for us. We plan to go back next year :)

Before going to Bali, we did some research on Tripadvisor and had a few hotels in mind we like but all turned out to be fully occupied. Then we stumbled upon Puri Bayu Guesthouse on a review and immediately booked through phone calls and emails. Airport pick up was pre-arranged with the hotel as well, at 200 000 rp per trip.

When we arrived, two boys came out from the alley to meet us and to help with the luggage, and we were ushered straight to our room which is down the alley, along a river, on the upper floor, overlooking the rice field. Two small bottled waters are complimentary. Bathroom is clean, with some basic toiletries. Water pressure is good, both hot and cold shower. Our bed is made everyday (but towels never changed). Breakfast is included, and served at your balcony on your requested time! The highlight of the stay. Beware that there is NO reception area and hence difficult when you need someone. A note for the elderly, the stairs are steep and narrow!

Do not take any drivers recommended by the owner. Since this is supposed to be a review on the hotel itself, I would just keep it short on my nerve wrecking experience with the drivers. We had an itinerary suggested by the hotel owner, Dewi, but this driver insisted he knew better on what was worth seeing and we listened to him, which was a terrible mistake. We ended up calling off the day trip and returned to Ubud central. To kill the whole afternoon, we walked to The Bodyworks for spa & massage which was supposed to be scheduled for that night (a call-in masseur recommended by the owner).

At The Bodyworks, we found out the price for that same masseur is cheaper than we were told the night before. Refreshments ie. ginger tea and fruit skewers were served in the Balinese garden. The spa made the day!

When we went back to the hotel, we told the owner what had happened on the day with the driver. She said we should "push" the driver instead of let the driver push us! And when we ask for cancellation on the massage appointment later that evening, saying that we have visited the place in the afternoon due to the day trip being called off, she expressed the disappointment from the masseur saying that we had "ruined his extra income". Extra income at a higher price than official shop with restricted time slot and no refreshments and spa facilities???

The next day, we decided to gave the owner a second chance by taking another driver from her. Everything went as planned, until at night the driver stopped us at "his friend's seafood restaurant", which was NOT the place we requested earlier. He pretended he doesn't know such a restaurant exists. We asked him to call the hotel owner. What's more annoying is that after the phone call, he still wasted half an hour pretending not knowing the location of the restaurant, driving aimlessly. Three times he drove us into no-man's dark alley, hoping we would "succumb" to his friend's nearby restaurant. It was truly nerve wrecking and a huge waste of time! "Cafe Nyoman is the previous Bali bombing place, you know?" he said to us when we came into the car after eating our seafood dinner. Again, evidence of him knowing THIS famous seafood place at Jimbaran.

I wonder what is the point of the hotel providing taxi services to their guests when the drivers have BAD ethics that leave bad impressions on the guests? It is, after all, human factor that plays an important role on your travel experiences.

Would I recommend this hotel to my friends? Yes, but I would warn them of the above mentioned as well. Then perhaps, they will have a nice place to sleep in, with the budget that suits them, and a lovely breakfast to start their day with!

My family stayed with the Gunadi family from January 3rd to January 9th of 2008. It was an incredible experience. Dewi runs the guest house and is an elegant and beautiful host who catered to our every need. Her husband, Gusti, is a gentleman in every sense of the word. More about them in a minute.

The guest house was recommended by a friend who travels to Bali a few times each year. This was my second trip to Bali and I wanted to take my family (wife and two young daughters) to show them the magic of Bali. Dewi took my reservation over the phone. We booked the two second-floor rooms that share a balcony overlooking a rice field.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the staff and our bags were carried down a path along a small creek covered with orchids. The rooms were incredible and in traditional Balinese style. Simple and exotic. The bathrooms are open-air and add to the ambience of Ubud. You should never visit Bali and miss a place like this.

Every morning we were greeted by our host Wayan who prepared a fresh, healthy breakfast of ginger tea, banana pancakes (the kids loved them), fresh fruit, and good company. Wayan taught us much about Balinese culture and traditions. From the balcony we could see locals quietly going about their daily lives - placing offerings in the temples that surround the rice fields, harvesting the rice, and simply walking down the path. Idyllic is the word that comes to mind.

The rooms are incredible and the staff became our new family.

I realize this is a hotel review site, but I feel compelled to share the following experience with potential visitors. My daughter got a nasty flu while we were in Bali (we were on a month-long vacation around SE Asia) and she became very ill. For those concerned about travelling with young children in Bali - READ THIS. The Gunadi family drove us to their personal pediatrician in Ubud. My daugher was seen in a matter of minutes and Gusti translated English/Indonesian with the doctor. Our daughter was in the hospital overnight with an IV. She recovered. I cannot say enough about the hospital staff. An overnight stay in a private, air-conditioned room cost a little more than $100 US. Without the assistance of Gunadi and Dewi - we would have had a very different experience in Bali. What we thought was the beginning of a terrible experience became an incredible personal revelation regarding the hospitality and kindness of the Balinese people. I cannot say enough about our friends at Puri Bayu. If you believe in Karma, and I do, good things are in store for the Gunadi family and their lovely residence - Puri Bayu. Dewi also has a neighboring guest house named Puri Cantik.

You will find Puri Bayu to be the best deal in Ubud and an incredibly enriching experience for a couple or a small family.

Our personal driver, Wayan Sardita, was another incredible aspect of our stay in Bali. Contact him directly (sardita_dita7@hotmail.com) and I will personally guarantee that you will have an amazing adventure in Bali. He has unique knowledge of everything in Bali and will ensure your trip is unforgettable. He and his family visited my daughter in the hospital. Have you ever visited a country where the hotel staff and your driver became dear friends? We have. We love Bali and our friends at Puri Bayu.

I'm smiling as I write this. Tell them the Greenlees Family sent you.
