swimming pool, spa, gym, billiards, pool tables, bowling alley, disco, live music in restaurant, the list goes on. good rooms decent food. one really doesn't have to move out. They have opened a new 40 room hotel in same premises below- it is cheaper, has modern new decor and the Italian restaurant is good.

Room Tip: valley facing or mussourie facing, choice is yours.

No comparison of this hotel. It offers plenty of entertainment inside the property. U can easily spend a few days not venturing out of the hotel. lovely location although a little far from the main mall road but its worth it. transport can be arranged to and fro from the mall road easily. the hotel has huge parking of cars if someone is driving down there. We stayed in rooms which had a private balcony garden, those rooms had a great view to. If mussoorie is ur holiday destination then this is the hotel.

had a short break, wife was pressing hard alongwith my grownup kid for a three night outing to Mussoorie, the 2nd time we decieded to be at Jaypee Mussoorie, A place of our choice, for food and activity that's the best place, I have travelled around the world, I find it the best....The staff and their service is again a very important feature which is really pleasing, It seems you are at your kingdom..you find nice pretty girls around, the best thing the toys I saw them giving to the kids on check in. this really takes the hospitality to the next level,. The warm pool.. spa all are coolest to use. kids love the 2nd floor, full of entertainment. The folf dances in the evening on the terrace along with Tea shop making fresh samosa were a treat. We once went to New Block..Vally View Tower for having Pizzas at Cafe Manor. over-all , I am on the last day of the stay today, but wonderful time i had....which i wanted to share with the readers.

I had been in this Hotel for two nights for my Companies function. The Property is really good. It is spread in very vast area and has serene views. You would enjoy the walk around the hotel. However service is very ordinary. As someone has stated cost cutting is visible..it is really a true statement..The facilities in the room were of the standard that of a 3 star hotel. The food was also ok. Not lavish as you expect in five star hotels. They had limited menu in breakfast. Overall experience was good but wont stay again considering v high cost.

Returning to Mussoorie after 21 years, with a bunch of friends I have known for longer - I honestly did not pay attention to where we were staying. The Jaypee Residency Manor, hereinafter referred to as JRM... Umm, sure, the website is promising of the times and relaxation to come, I thought to myself after a quick browse and left it at that.

Jaypee was a let down. In my travels for work and for unplanned holidays, I have stayed in better (read: honest) hotels for INR 2500 a night in towns smaller than Barlowganj. At least they don’t pretend to be what they are not. If they say 3 star or a 2 star then they mean it. JRM is a 3 star in a 5 star disguise.

The problem is not the hotel or its intent to just not serve you but primarily the crowd that throngs here to blow their cash in truckloads; and how the management is now so conditioned to this variety of guest. It's not your everyday star-hotel crowd. Mostly the cash-loaded-suitcase wala neo-rich broker types. I bet JRM gets a lot of this crowd - because they seemed more comfortable catering to this crowd (which is not saying much, in the first place).

The upside:

If I objectively review JRM, I'd say that they have a great location which is cut-off from from the madness they call The Mall in Mussoorie. ATMs at walking distance, as are grocery stores (so you don't get massacred with 250 rupee bottled water). A great terrace (except when they have that moron DJ trying to kill you with his "muujhik"). They view is great and the air clean. The restaurant serves decent food. The butter in the Butter Chicken wouldn't stop your heart as much as the prices on the menu will, though.

The rooms and bed-sheets are clean and the pillows don't smell of jasmine hair oil leftover by the last guest. The bathroom plumbing can be a bit suspect and I suggest you hone up on your plumbing skills to guide the plumber. Not kidding on this one, my friend did and then the problem got fixed, sort of.

The room service is faster than restaurant service (don't know how they pull that one off! I heard something about a separate kitchen for room service, though). The housekeeping staff (except for the lady on the phone who manages the dental kits) aim to please. More on the dental kits a little later...

JRM's new wing is plusher looking with an even better valley view and nice lifts that do not have paint peeling off the rusty doors (like the ones in the older wing). The service at the restaurant/pizzeria here is another story all together – and a long one at that. I am reminded of the old hindi saying - sabar ka phal meetha hota hai, loosely translated as, he who is patient, gets the sweetest fruit (or a meal, this case – which can be frightfully overpriced).

The pizzeria in the new wing serves pretty good pizzas but god help you if there are more than 3 tables occupied - the widely advertised stone oven pizzeria can only accommodate one, yes, ONE, pizza at a time! We made the mistake of ordering about six - they came at 30 minute intervals, only after the fathers took turns in the kitchen ensuring that everyone from the chef to the waiter knew that we were serious about getting our kids some food. And watch out for the restaurant manager who likes to be surprised when you inform him of the existence of some dishes on the menu - whose existence he vehemently denies! (Once you show him the dish, served on your table by his assistant - he sort of vanishes into thin air. I mistook him for a trainee captain - till a bemused maître'd informed us that he was indeed the restaurant manager! Wow, really?!)

Now the amenities: The pool is a super-chlorinated indoor heated one which you may share (at your own risk) with un-showered & assorted salwar kameez clad guests. It is totally unattended by hotel staff (except when they come to switch off the lights or refresh the towels). They really don't care if the guests forgot to bring their swimming costumes. After all who's gonna risk an argument with an esteemed guest here... At Jaypee Residency Manor - you are among friends after all... (wink, wink!)

The gym-room, steam, jacuzzi and sauna work well but the spa is dodgy at best. There is a play-zone called the Leisure Mall, which can set a parent back about a 1000 rupees per kid per half hour at the very least. You have been warned - the leisure comes at a price.

Now the downside:

- They mess up payments, especially advance payments (despite you sending them a bank copy of the e-transfer). Before and after. Period.

- Package discounts need to be reminded. (Mine added up to a day’s stay and the cashier had to be reminded to ring them in)

- They do not accept credit card advances. (Do you have any idea how many card points I lost?!)

- The showers leak and the bathroom sinks choke up, without exception. The plumber needs to be told what to do, without exception!

- They do not supply more than 2 dental kits at a time. (It's another thing that you are paying extra for the child in your room and you forgot your toothbrushes back at home. "What can we do, our policy does now allow more than 2 kits per room, Sir", and full marks to the loyal housekeeping lady who does not budge on hotel policy. She’s really strict with toothpaste handouts.)

- The god-awful dinner buffet is designed by an professional extortionist (INR 1111++ adults, INR 700++ kids) who pretends to the F&B Head. (I know it's an all you can eat buffet but how much can any person eat that the hotel needs to buffer costs? Maybe the crowd that generally comes here has larger appetites...? Maybe....)

- If you are in a wheelchair or pushing a baby in a stroller - this is not the place you want come to. Steps, steps and then some more steps. Nix for the disabled and the baby boomers.

- The mandatory wheelchair ramp's incline should come with a warning (4WD wheelchairs only). The new wing fares better on handicapped access. Stay there.

- The food bill may (and probably will) exceed your room bill (and remember that breakfast is included in the package). The Bar bill - well, bar bills at 5 stars are never joyous sights.

- Service is dismal and frightfully poor for a starred property

- The kitchen is nowhere near the stars it claims to wear

Enough said.

This place works for some folks. Our group was probably the wrong set to land up here in the first place. We make the mistake of expecting service when we pay money - and as a group we spend a substantial chunk on our vacations, collectively. We get pleasure from the hospitality & service - not from chucking wads of cash at a bunch of people who couldn't care less - as long as it is cash.

The captains, the waiters and the service staff at JRM have more sense, sensibility and empathy than their bosses. Some of the staff, and I'd say 50% of them are good chaps. Hardworking and ready to help. The other half - particularly the suit-wearing managerial variety, need to be sent back to hotel management classes. The owners? They should just stick to what they do best. Hotels are not everyone's cup of tea. Why bother, Sir...?

Despite everything, the property manages really occupancy levels and booking can be a challenge. I am not surprised. I don’t think the management is complaining. They built the new wing just to accommodate the unstoppable hordes…

If you enjoy mediocrity, are not fussy or mildly discerning and truly appreciate a royally overpriced three star experience then JRM is the place you want book.

Or, that you didn't get a booking anywhere else this summer. In which case - enjoy the ride. ;)

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on the terrace or the ones with the valley view if in the old wing. Else just ask...

Of all the romantic holidays that i have taken my girl to - this was simply the best! The scenic views of the Mussoorie hills rejuvenates you every single time. Was an amazing weekend. Staff was courteous helpful and not overbearing. However there were a lot of families traveling so it was hard to sit in the common areas and have quiet moments, but getting up in the mornings to the clean fresh crisp air was a panacea for town weary souls.
Will definetly come back more.
