We stayed for a day at Rokeby Manor. I can summarize my experience as follows:

Good Points:
1. Peaceful place with some great views of the valley below
2. The ambience was great and staff was helpful
3. The rooms were cozy
4. Breakfast was a feast. The person who served breakfast carried a smile all the time and that is always comforting for a tourist.

Improvements:
1. The rooms were a little stale
2. Price was higher than what I have seen in similar places around the world. We were planning to extend our trip but did not because of the price

Room Tip: We stayed in Rustic cabins. Room no. 8 was better than the one adjacent to it.

Rokeby hit us a surprise. We had booked the hotel through reading reviews but were not too optimistic. It was love at first sight. We loved it immediately for its ambiance, decor and comfortable setting. The room given to us was very homely yet had everything luxurious. The lounge area was our favourite and we loved it so much that we did not feel like going out in boring Mussorie. It had a huge collection of books which made us glued to that place. Emily's their restaurant was exceptional. Its lasagne as well as Indian food were relished by my entire family. We wanted to sit in every corner of Emily's and enjoy the experience. Beautiful colours and lovely decor made every meal a pleasure. The service at front desk was very polite and helpful. If we ever return to Mussorie it will be only for a stay at Rokeby.

Great location, beautiful view, clean !, willing staff, good chef, some lovely rooms.
The only drawback was the reluctance of the staff to light the fires in the lobby and in the rooms early in March..

Room Tip: Rooms11 & 12. The Cottage. Avoid 8, no windows, bed on floor, noise from generators

Rokeby Manor is nestled quietly around tall pine trees in the quaint little hill town of Landour. This beautiful spot is just a few kilometres off Mussourie but is so much more away from the milling crowd, noisy hustlers, and dusty construction. It boasts of having Ruskin Bond, Victor Banerji, Tom Alter, and Prannoy Roy as its famous inhabitants. And Rokeby Manor is the jewel in this crown. We stayed in the Log Cabin from the 28th to the 31st of March, 2013. The view from the master bedroom was gorgeous, you could see Mussourie and the Doon Valley simutaneously. The stay was more than comfortable, and became even more memorable because of Chintamani, our butler, par excellence. Not only did he take care of the three little brats we were travelling with, but made sure that everything was absolutely spic and span. Food at Emily's was delicious, but since the sleepy little hill town of Landour operates at its own pace, do not expect express service. Sit, chat, and when the food arrives, trust me, the wait would be worth it. While at Rokeby Manor, go for long walks, explore the many churches, gawk at the magnificent snow-capped peaks if the sky is clear, shop at Prakash Stores for plum jam and gooseberry jelly, have hot Maggi at Chaar Dukaan, come back, have a hot water bath, sit around a bonfire, and look at the moon, or the Doon lights at a distance. We really had a lovely time. And so this Thank You Note for everyone at Rokeby Manor. You Guys Rock.

Room Tip: Log cabin is gorgeous if you are travelling with friends.

We arrived at Rokeby Manor not knowing what to expect. We left with the most charming of memories of both the hotel and Landour. We were nine of us, between the log cabin and a double room. Redolent with a faux colonial charm, the reception rooms are cosy and welcoming, Emily's, a salon like dining/coffee area, is really a meeting place for travelers, exchanging stories over coffee, (the papaya jam is a treat). Chintamani, at the lodge was a smiling Jeeves, so wonderfully helpful and cheery. Chef Manohar at the BBQ fattened us well but the one complaint we all had was the plastic birdbath in the garden. Such a misfit with the rest of the place, one was tempted to tip it over the cliff instantly, instead, soothed one's nerves with an excellent, if much too brief, head massage at the salon. The walks to Sister's Bazaar and beyond take you away from Mussourie's mess. The Language School and views of snow capped peaks makes one forget the world for a while.

Room Tip: Don't take room 7. Small and stuffy, the bathroom is impossibly tiny - there are other double ro...

Sitting at just 50 meters from the famous Chaar Dukaan of Landour Cantt, this serene and quaint Raj Era Bunglow totally justifies the company of beautiful hills which it keeps. A croquet celebrating reception leads to the wooden stairwell and takes you to the Emily's Restaurant on the first floor. The restaurant is the perfect place to have a leisurely meal with your family and friends. The terrace is aptly suited for a snail pace breakfast while enjoying the soothing views of the hills.

Food is above average. Mustard Chicken is really good, Roasted Chicken and Barbeque Chicken can be avoided. In Indian Menu, Dal Makhni was impressive, but their specialty - Curd Okra was just ok.

A beautifully structured Tea garden with a small swing and water fountain is also a great place to hang around with family.

I'd really recommend everyone visiting Landour Cantt to stop by this place and enjoy atleast a cup of tea at the terrace.

Landour is the answer if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of Mussoorie and Rokeby Manor is the perfect place to stay. Charming hotel, with delightful and very helpful staff, plus a wonderful restaurant. Every room is different and Rokeby has a real English feel to it, with the central wooden staircase and delightful small garden. Highly recommended if you're travelling to this area, but suggest that you book well ahead or you may be disappointed.

Room Tip: Every room is different, but all equally charming

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Rokeby was built in 1840 by Captain G.N. Cauthy and is one of the landmarks of Landour. The house and two acre estate are situated slightly above and to the east of St. Paul's Church and the old cantonment parade ground, which is now Char Dukan. Like many houses in Mussoorie, its name is taken from the writings of Sir Walter Scott, whose book-length poem describes heroic battles near the original Rokeby Castle in England. Methodist missionaries continued to operate the property as a guest house throughout the rest of the 20th century. Today, Rokeby has been carefully restored to its original glory. This heritage building is resplendent with character in its elaborate brick arches and niches, intricate stone walls, real wood floors and beams, and cosy fireplaces. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the traditions of bygone years – where colonial officers, renegade soldiers of fortune and pious miss saibs lived under one roof – can still be felt. An air of mystery beckons visitors. ... more   less
