“An Enthralling Experience”

Rajaji National Park
Ranked #149 of 504 things to do in Uttarakhand
Attraction details
Reviewed February 10, 2012

I finally got an opportunity to go for my first Jungle Safari ever when my in-laws planned for a small trip to Rajaji National Park. Nestled in the sacred city of Haridwar in Uttaranchal Rajaji is where we got to enjoy nature in its sheer raw form. We headed for a quick escape and were thrilled with the first very glimpse of deer and chital on our way. Our path grew prettier at every step and the company of chital and deer made it even more pleasing. I only wish we could spot wild elephants which are found in plenty here, but being optimistic i think that is what will keep the thrill and excitement alive for our next jungle safari. For now I was only too happy with being amidst such greenery, quiet ambiance, stay in jungle, campfire, bumpy rides and that adrenaline rush of night safari.

Rajaji National Park is one of those lesser visited places in India that not many people know about. It is very close to Haridwar and is better known for its elephants. When we went there, it was Day 1 of that year's season, and there were very few people in that area.

For us, that was good, and it turned out to be quite an adventure. The most common area that is used by most people is the Motichur gate. We were able to spend quite a bit of time there, and we got an excellent guide. However, the best was when we went to the Chilla gate. When we got there, it was locked since no one had gone in there that day (remember, the park had opened only one day earlier). We were the only people in the park all day. We met with a forest guard and had nice tea at his quarters, with him telling us stories about his stay there.

Overall, we spotted a lot of birds (we love bird watching), a few elephants, and a couple of leopards. It was a good trip.
