Good low budget option if you want to stay by the riverside and the main ghats (Burning ghats, Dashashwamedh Ghat etc). I was in the standard single room, clean and well maintained. However, the large open air vents above the door meant that I could hear much more than I wanted to from the next room. The restaurant is pretty average, but the staff were very helpful in terms of making sure you didn't get ripped off too much by touts etc..

I would imagine if you are an European backpacker you would feel at home at the Alka. It is a hotel very much for international tourists, which results in a very average hotel with utterly no charm or a professional hotel feel. The location is excellent on the Ganges, if you like the smell of burning bodies. The rooms are average, you get what you pay for! The restaurant is a mixed bag, but better than venturing into the horrid Varanasi at night! The service is very friendly, though as a warning any trip arranged by the hotel shall then involve the driver or boatman taking you to touts, very annoying!

In summary, an average hotel, with more of a hotel feel full of backpackers than a hotel environment.

*Warning* the airport pick up is NOT complimentary and is I fact a steep charge of rs.700 (usual rate in India is 450)

Stayed in room 101 as per previous recommendations on TP over Christmas for 3 nights. The staff are incredibly accommodating and friendly and will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. The food is outstanding as well and very well priced.

Our room had a wonderful river facing view over the Ganges and had its own balcony which I sat on every morning and had chai and toast. it's wonderful being woken every morning with the sounds of prayer and the general hubbub of Varanasi esp the kids playing cricket below. Being a Westerner from the UK I did find the room slightly dirty (curtains and some other surfaces need a good scrub) but in terms of Indian standards for similar hotels I thought it was pretty good. The bedding (sheets and pillows) were all clean and fresh on arrival and the bed was comfy so I don't have any complaints there.

I don't think there is a need for an AC room over December and January as it's rather cold but management will organize for some blankets to be bought up as well.

The hotel organized a little Christmas Eve party with traditional live music and dancing and then came afterwards which was wonderful. They go out of their way to make your stay the best they can.

The wifi was 100 rupees for our entire stay and was good and if you take the river exit onto the ghat you will find Sounil who will take you out on a boat ride and tour if the river for a fixed price of 100 rupees per hour. His team are very knowledgable and you will learn a lot.

I did find the touts and shopkeepers in Varanasi annoying but if you remain calm and smile and say no thank you all will be ok.

All in all it has been by far one of the best places I have stayed at in India and I would definitely come back to this hotel again. Varanasi has a lot to say for itself and I'm just sorry I did not spend more time here to explore as 4 days was not enough time. Loved it.

Thank you hotel Alka and staff.

Hotel Alka turns out to be quite the general run of the mill budget hotel. Apart from its excellent location right next to the ghats, there is really nothing memorably good about its rooms, the ambience and upkeep of the place, the food at the restaurant and the staff.

The washroom in our room has one of the most unfriendly wash basin that I've ever seen in a hotel. First of all it comes with two taps, one delivering scaling hot water, while the other ice-cold water. How the hotel management envisions us poor patrons manually mixing both outlets ourselves, I do not know. Also the wash basin has absolutely no place to hold any bottles or containers, not even a small tube of toothpaste, so toiletries will have to be put outside, while we retrieve them one by one as we need them. There is also no floor mat provided, and combined with the leaky shower tap, the bathroom is perpetually wet, which means every visit to the washroom will result in a wet path of foot prints leading out back to the room - definitely uncomfortable.

The of food served at the hotel restaurant was rather forgettable. On our first night, we observed many other patrons left their meals mostly untouched. On knowledge of us patronising the restaurant in the hotel next door for our meals, the staff appeared reasonably upset and demanded to understand why, rather puzzling since it means they must have thought that the food served in their hotel is excellent.

The rooms that we got is spacious and generally clean, but has a window that opens out to the common walkway in front of the hotel. When combined with locals who seem to enjoy early morning chats (as early as 5am), it means sleep quality is affected. Also fabulous views of the river is only available to a selected few rooms, and comes with a heftier pricetag, while the rest of the rooms are generally tiny and viewless.

Room Tip: Rooms with views of the ghats are hard to come by, and comes with a rather hefty pricetag as well.

Having been exposed to horrors in Katra and sub standard accommodation in most places it was refreshing to goto this hotel. Lots of foreigners and a melting pot of cultures. The hotel is well known and central to the key attractions of temples and ghats. Overlooking the Ganga it truly is calming vs the chaos and squalor of the city streets. Muna is knowledgeable and an honest man always willing to help.

I came to Hotel Alka from Ayodhya on 15th December. I stayed there for almost 8 days. Its a magnificent experience. I came solo and the security is really good in Hotel Alka and its staff is very decent comparing to other Indian hotels.

And its manager Mr Munna is very cordial and helpful. All staff members of hotel Alka is well respected in the vicinity and its a great protection for its clients.
So ultimately I paid my homage to Lord Shiva in Varanasi and it made twice fantastic by staying in hotel Alka

This is our second stay at this hotel and it will always be our first choice when we come to Varanasi in the future. It has fantastic views of the Ganges (possibly the best in Varanasi), clean rooms, friendly and tirelessly helpful staff. Neeraj on reception has looked after us very well and been a friendly and smiley face.

Everything was excellent, but we put sleep quality down as very good because it is in Varanasi and with the excellent view comes the noise from the ghats. Totally worth it.

We will be back!
