Hotel Temple on Ganges
Ranked #18 of 87 Hotels in Varanasi

Yes, there was a cow eating trash outside the hotel, but there was trash just about everywhere we went in Varanasi, not just outside the hotel. We arrived after a traffic jam unrivalled anywhere else in India and were greeted by the friendly manager. He showed us two rooms, both were the same price but one had a view of the river and the ghats, and the other didn't. The air conditioner took several tries to get going, but once we got the hang of it (and some new batteries in the remote!), it ran without any problems.
We never took advantage of the free yoga and meditation classes, and at the time there weren't many tourists, so we weren't sure if the restaurant was open or not so never ate there. But the manager and staff were always friendly and would take the time to talk, every day we would see staff cleaning around the hotel and little things like the internet and sodas were priced fairly. The view from the balcony was top-notch, and fellow travellers staying at the Haifa down the street said Temple on Ganges was cheaper and cleaner than their hotel (at a higher price).
If you're looking for mid-range accomodation that is clean, quiet in a good location and has a great view, this would be hard to beat.

This hotel was just terrible. We arrived from an extremely long day of traveling from Agra to New Delhi by train and then a flight from New Delhi to Varanasi and were exhausted. When we arrived at the hotel there was a big cow eating trash outside. Then the manager walked us to our room. The door was pad-locked from the outside, which was sign #1 that this was not going to be a nice place. When we walked in the room the floors were flithy and scratchy. Next, there was no bath tub or shower, it was just a room with a toilet and a hose with a drain on the floor! Then the air conditioning kept going out and the temps were around 110 degrees. Next, the manager apologized that there would be no free breakfast the following morning because of some holiday, or something....and the restaurant was closed that night, too....Long story short, we got our bags zipped up and got out of there. By the way, for the same price, $65.00/night we were able to stay at the nicest hotel in the city, which happens to be the Radisson. It was actually a very nice place, more like a Hilton in the U.S. and we were truly happy there for the next 5 nights.

This Hotel is in a good location especially for women as we felt safe at night which I didn't when I stayed at Scindia Ghat. We were disappointed with our room as there had been a mix up and we weren't given the room I expected. The room was small and the blankets could walk on there own they were so stiff with grease and grim - take a top sheet - luckily I did!.

Sadly for us they had a large group staying who took over the roof top restaurant playing electric guitar until late etc and very noisy (I don't mind local noise and religious chants that's what I came for but not an electric guitar and old bloke who thought he could sing!!!!)

To be fair the staff were very helpful the food was good and the location excellent - without the tour group and in the larger room I'd booked we would re-book.

We stayed at the Temple on Ganges in Feb 2006 and again in Oct 2008. It's drawback is one of its strong points: It's located at Assi Ghat which is calm and lively at the same time, but far from the city center. The hotel is comfortable and clean and the breakfasts are quite good. The view from the rooftop restaurant and the balconies is wonderful. The only slightly weak point is the plumbing, but "this is India, darling." The manager is great and his brother, the masseur, excellent.

Located at Assi Ghat, last Ghat in Varanasi. Hotel was not full so had room on the uppermost floor (five or six) where there were rooms with view of the Ganges.

Clean but basic hotel. Shower with hot running water, working amenities. Screens for mosquitos, fan but no AC.

Rooftop breakfast area, laundry facilities available.

No alcohol allowed on premises.
