Key points:
1. Arranged car pick up on our arrival at MGS railway station 15 kms away at 1AM in the morning. That was first +++ point as if not pre-arranged we would have been at the mercy of the taxi touts.
2. Hotel itself is excellent location. Varanasi is a strong experience and to have the roof top terrace to catch your breath, have a veg curry and drink along with fabulous views is another +++. We had two rooms in two nights; standard and a larger river facing. Both were fine. Staff very helpful.
3. Finally after helping us locate a tuc tuc for the railway station, I found I had left my computer mouse. Without fuss, they arranged to have successfully couriered to my next destination. ++++

Perhaps location is everything - however you also need a degree of comfort. This was provided to a certain extent by our small room with trickling shower. It was a haven to return to after the full on experience of the Ghats immediately outside the door. The view from our room was good - looking over the ghats and receiving early morning and late evening light. The room provided small hard chairs to sit on.
This place is really let down by its surly and uncommunicative staff.
The restaurant on the roof was abject apart from the views over the Ganges. Vegetable jalfrezi came complete with soggy fried potatoes in the jalfrezi - unusual in our experience. The tandoor menu was not available at lunchtime and when requested in the evening we were told that there would be a one hour wait. Breakfast was inadequate with cold toast, omelette left on open trays to cool - for how long?? Scrambled egg when requested was refused. Not a good experience and one which we cannot recommend.

Room Tip: The best are at the front

We stayed in a river view room for two nights - view was incredible, room decor was hideous (but could be improved so easily and at such a low cost). The shower was hot, but water flow was too meagre to wash my hair. The most worrying issue we had was with the power points in the room, I plugged my iphone in to charge and realised I was getting a huge electric shock - had to drop it on the floor and knock the plug out with my shoe!
Service in the rooftop restaurant was appalling, staff huddled in the corner and looked annoyed if you asked for anything. Yes, the view was great though, and at least the wifi worked up there.
On reflection, we didn't feel that the hotel offered value for money, there were far better options near by.

We arrived on the very busy auspicious bathing days and the city was overrun by pilgrims and tourists. Our hotel was an oasis away from the noise, dust and crowds. The location of the hotel is right on the ghats and the riverfront, which is why it is not approachable by vehicles but the staff help with luggage and rickshaws. Insist when you reserve that you get a waterfront room with a view over the ghats and the Ganga. The staff was slow, the WiFi even slower and was really only available in the hall way despite the claim that it works in the rooms. Breakfast was very meagre. The rooftop restaurant was a pleasant place to sit and drink and chat with others. The WiFi worked up there!

Room Tip: Insist when you reserve that you get a waterfront room with a view over the ghats and the Ganga.

Forget all your preconceptions about what a good hotel is and definitely go and stay in that hotel if you're looking for some kind of different experience. We've travelled many countries in the world and stayed in so many different places, most of them quite impersonal and 'looking all alike". We think it's really frustrating to find oneself in the same sort of "international" hotel whatever the country. Rashmi Guest House doesn't belong to that sort of places. It's quite confortable, welcoming and clean even if the rooms are not very large but it's very particular. It encapsulates and conveys the very special energy and magic of Varansasi.
We stayed there for the first time in 2010 and we were just sort of absorbed by the energy of the place. The view from the terrasse overlooking the Ganges is just breathtaking and this place is a mere haven of peace away from the bustling activity of the city and at the same time it's exceptionally located, just a 5 minutes walk away from the very busy main Ghat. Having breakfast or a meal on that terrasse is a unique moment connecting you to the magic and energy of this city. The food of the restaurant of the hotel (Dolphin restaurant) is delicious and quite affordable and the staff is friendly. We had all our meals in that restaurant and enjoyed eveything we had.
Actually this hotel was so attractive that we came back in january 2013 for a longer stay, with a group of friends. Everybody shared our enthousiasm about this place. And like the first time we chose a room with a view onto the Ganges, which is really a special treat even if those rooms are a bit more expensive than the other ones but they're really worth it and they're the most confortable ones.
We were even more in rapture about our stay than the first ttime and we got the same feeling of being warmly welcomed. The staff is quite nice, respectful and helpful.
This place is a unique opportunity to grasp the essence of Varanasi.
Our second stay was all the more special and unforgettable as we were lucky to be shown around the city by PAPPU, a very nice, talented guide we met in the hotel. He really made a difference compared with the young guide we had on our first stay and who merely showed us around the "touristic things". Besides the usual sites, Pappu really took us off the beaten tracks and made us discover Varanasi from within. Being born there he knows quite a lot about his city and quite willingly shares about his city, the Indian culture and religion at large and so on. Moreover he's a respectful, discreet and caring person and with a lot of initiative, which proved quite helpful during our stay. Don't miss this opportunity to discover Varanasi with that brilliant person!

Room Tip: Our favourite rooms are of course the higher floors rooms with an exceptional view onto the Ganges

Our third stay in Varanasi but surely the best.
Even with changes due to train problems the hotel car picked us up at our new arrival point and drove us to the hotel . First two nights in the rooms without river view. The rooms are small but clean. Breakfast very good and served in the fantastic rooftop restaurant. In the evening we enjoyed our meals in the same restaurant with fantastic view and the sound of the Aarti going on. Our lugage was moved to the river view rooms for our last day. Here you have a fridge, AC and a good bathroom. Fantastic days !!

Visiting Varanasi at its peak season and not paying through your nose for a hotel room, one really must have realistic expectations. Rashmi Guest House, right on Manmandir Ghat, a minute away from the most popular Dasaswamedh actually turned out to be much nicer than I expected. The staff is very friendly, my room on the first floor was basic with a comfortable bed, a small bathroom and most importantly, it was clean. The rooftop restaurant has a nice view of the Ganga and the ghats and even though we were just there for our evening tea, the service could be so much better. I'd read several reviews about the steep stairs and those could be a problem if you're older or not in great shape, but I was actually expecting them to be a lot worse! Wi-fi is choppy and undependable. Overall though I was happy and you can't go wrong with the location.

Room Tip: Ask for a lower floor if you have a problem with steep stairs.
