A Palace on the River, Rashmi Guest House
Ranked #25 of 79 Hotels in Varanasi
Reviewed February 1, 2013

Rashmi Guesthouse or A Palace on River is one of the best placed lodging spots if you venture to India's most holy city of Varanasi. We chose their deluxe river view rooms ( $125 ) for our three night stay. It is all about location at Rashmi because the Ganges river is just a short distance from the hotel. You are essentially on the river. Let me say that the hotel is just okay other than the views and location. You will be lucky if your wi-fi connection works; the food for breakfast is not pleasing or good; the Dolphin Restaurant is average. We would like to comment on the staff who were very good and helpful. The views from the terrace above the rooms are awesome. So, there are some redeeming features if you decide on booking a room here. I would grade the overall experience as good, but not excellent.

Room Tip: As mentioned, a deluxe river view is mandatory, if your budget allows.

Varansai is an incrediable city that you won't to miss it in the world. Even the room is small and location is hard to find at the beginning. The Rashmi Guest House food and service has left me good impression.
Because of tour guide -Golu's help including the driver that he recommended, I had a better understanding of the city, country and culture.
I appreciate everything i received in the trip and I am willing to share the unforgettable experience to you.

This hotel was one of the worst places to stay. Firstly, the hotel is not accessible by car or any type of mobile transport so if you have any type of problem with walking or climbing avoid this property completely. We called ahead before booking as my parents were accompanying us and enquired about accessibility, we were not informed about the stairs at the entrance or the fact that cars could not come up to the doorstep. As a result my parents were completely inconvenienced and were let completely immobile in the hotel. We paid for two additional beds Rs 2400 however at arrival at the hotel we were told that the rooms were too small to accommodate extra beds. No prior warning was given before arrival and no refund was offered. To top it the manager was rude and incompetent with no idea about hospitality. The rooms were no bigger than broom closets. They turned of power on the air conditioning after about 10:30 at night. There was not even a complimentary bottle of water. The room service was completely unresponsive. For the price this hotel was a real joke. A special mention to Make my trip who completely washed their hands of all responsibility after pocketing the cash.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel. Complete rip off!

We stayed three nights at the Palace on the River. The location can't be beat since it's literally right on the ghat. Though it's tucked away in a narrow alley and would have been almost impossible for us to find if not for the driver picking us up at the train station. They hotel staff was very nice and the property was up to par for Indian standards. Please note, this is still Indian so would be unfair to compare to western standards. But you're most likely in Varansi to experience the ghats and not be locked up in your room. And this is one of the best locations since it's literally steps from the ghats.
The restaurant was okay, nothing special. We had a couple of meals there. But overall the hotel is a very good value if you are looking for a place in the heart of Vanasi and near the ghats.

This hotel is very well situated with a view of the |Ganges from the roof and the steps. The rooms are a bit basic but clean and adequate. The staff were most helpful and the breakfast was good and provide with a view of the Ganges every morning.

This is a great hotel. You couldn't ask for more on your trip to Varanasi. Make sure you ask for Golu Guide to show you around town and help arrange anything you may need. He helped me plan a ceremony on the Ganges for my father who passed away 2 months ago. It was amazing. Very personal and thoughtful.
