For those on the road for a while, the Rashmi is a fine break from the rigours of India - especially in Varanasi which in India on stilts. The location is perfect, the rooms a little small but with European beds and bedding, the rooftop restaurant is fine - if the Indian dishes a little bland, and service from Gopal downstairs and his team upstairs is perfect - always there but not in your face hustling bucksheesh. I suppose it's a touch too expensive - but, hey, it's been a long time coming....
Two minor quibbles...the 'porridge' isn't porridge and it would be good to have the wifi upstairs too.

We paid $125, but the room was very small.

We had AC room, but the AC didn't work actually - when we asked to do something with it, they changed AC with another... it was working only 10 min. We were "lucky" - it was only February ... If you are going to Rashmi guest house in May or June, good AC will definitely help you.

The room had Ganga view, but the windows were not clean to enjoy this view.

Also we'd like to write about Rohit, a local tour guide... We don't recommend him or other guys who would like to "help" you to go to ... silk and other producers in town, and he’ll probably forget about some other places - like temples!

Only one good point was location. It was amazing.

We lived near Varansi for a year and visited it many times. We have been back several times and this is the first time we have not stayed in the cantonement area at Clark's Hotel. If you want to be on the ghats, this is place to stay. It is in the middle of everything The staff was helpful, the food very good at the roof restaurant and the room AC was tyhe new wall type.
Two caveats: the rooms are really small, we had twin beds and there was no room to walk around the beds and really no place to put our luggage. But there was plenty of hot water in the Indian style shower. The other note is to pay attention when you pay your bill. They charged me in US$ without asking my preference. The exchange rate is better if you charge in rupees.

I wanted to write how much I enjoyed staying here - incredible central location, delicious food, wonderful views from the restaurant and exceptionally nice staff. Ramesh was extremely efficient about the booking and the rooms were, while not huge, perfectly adequate. We were given clean towels every day and the cleaning was thorough. I would not hesitate to recommend this place. Top spot for painters. Louise, London

Palace on the River was the perfect choice for our stay in Varanassi. Tripadvisor reports very accurate. Excellent postion, helpful staff, smooth airport transfers, rooftop restaurant good. Rooms were small.
