We endend up here because the Surya Hotel couldn't understand why we were visa exempt and wouldn't let us stay! The hotel seems to have been a grand hotel once, but now it's just a huge old building. I have to say that service still is itself very good, they are very nice and provided us with a heater and mosquito repellent. The bed and bathroom were clean. Our room had a small table with a couple of chairs and a closet. The beds were ok. The bathroom is large but there is no separation with the shower. We had to hurry our showers because the hot water runs out after a while and since we showered one right after the other the heater didn't have time to warm up again. You probably think it doesn't sound so bad but considering that we paid a little over 40 USD, it's expensive for India. So all in all if you don't have anywhere else to spend the night, this will do but chances are for the price you'll find better.

This hotel is far from good: It is an odd, run-down establishment with filthy bathrooms in the entrance area, grungy rooms with small, uncomfortable beds. Happily, however, the shower was surprisingly good.
The men at the front reception were helpful but strangely so. Literally 4 men carried out our 3 small carry-on bags, another appeared at 10 pm at our door unsolicited with a role of toilet paper in hand -- obviously looking for yet another tip. It was an odd experience in a challenging city!

This hotel is housed in a renovated portion of the Hathwa Palace in Chetganj, Varanasi (takes about 15 - 30 mins by auto from rail station, depending on traffic). Located centrally, it is an ideal location for the traveller with a taste for old Indian royal splendour and traditions amid modern urban amenities at an affordable price. It offers a comfortable stay for you and your family with excellent services and above average dining (including Continental food, which is surprisingly in a place like Varanasi). The Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat (Ganges) are located comfortably nearby (about 2 Kms, 20 mins by rickshaw).

Although it is located in the heart of Varanasi, you can actually enjoy a quiet stay with your family, away from the hustle and bustle of the congested traffic because the hotel rooms are located in the central part of the complex, away from the main roads. We stayed in a room on the 1st floor which has long verandahs tastefully decorated with antique chandeliers and furniture, overlooking a garden where you can enjoy lazing in the winter sunshine after breakfast (not too many floweres though). There is a swimming pool but it is not in use.The passageway from the Reception to the stairs to the first floor is also decorated with numerous antique memorabilia and interesting pictures adorn the walls. A now defunct marble fountain in a small courtyard adds to the royal ambience. Some ground floor passages are a bit damp and dark (I have no idea about the rooms there as all guests during our stay were staying in the First floor).

The room we lived in was clean and spacious (not that common in most hotels in Varanasi) having comfortable beds (some with old-fashioned beds), TV, Intercom, clean toilet with geyser (a must if you visit in Dec-Jan ; winters can be very cold). The view from the rooms is not excellent, but then you dont spend much time indoors in Varanasi with so much to see.

The staff were very cordial and the speed and efficiency of room service was superb (to our surprise). All the staff (from the reception to housekeeping and the restaurant) were well behaved and eager to help.

The restaurant - Darpan, serves good food - we tasted Indian, Chinese and Continental. To me, the Continental Cuisine came as a pleasant surprise - I had least expected it in a place like Varanasi (most places give you a dal, roti and sabji). The vegetable au gratin was particularly excellent. Although the prices are slightly high, the amounts were sufficient and the quality of food very good. The staff were again very efficient and cordial and we didn't have to wait more than 15 mins for any order. The only downside is that Tea/Coffee is only served in pots (which equals approx. 3 cups) and not in single cups which is definitely a problem because you don't always want to have so much.

Godhulia and Dashashwamedh Road and the Vishwanath Temple are fairly near (approx 2 Kms - walkable but preferable to go by rickshaw). Beware of certain rogue auto and rickshaw drivers loitering around the entrance who charge at will to take you there (I would advice you to take a rickshaw from the main road).

In jist, by staying here you can enjoy the best of both worlds - visiting The Temple, shopping at Godhulia (and enjoying your daily dollop of Malai from Pagal Sardar's maybe !!!) while enjoying a comfortable stay in old royal ambience with good food and excellent service from hotel staff. and There are far cheaper options for those who are tight on finances, but expect to compromise big time on cleanliness and quality of services. If you want a quiet, nice place to stay with good food and services in the heart of Varanasi and are prepared to pay a few extra bucks for your comfort (the tariff is definitely higher than average for Varanasi) I would think that the experience here was value for money on the whole.

We were in the hotel for 3 nights, and it was one of the most comfortable and enjoyable stay compared to other hotels with same rating in India. Inspite of being a crowded city, the hotel was situated in quiet place but within minutes from city centre. All rooms were well decorated and very clean. The hotel staffs were courteous and knew their job well. The reception desk were always ready to help and management was marvellous and guided us to organize our itinerary of going to different temples, ghats and other interesting sights like Sarnath/Hindu University. Watching the evening Ganga Arati from the boat is a must for all Varansi tourists. All in all - a great experience and good value for money.

My 2. time in this little pearl of Varanassi - now with my girlfriend for a romantic holiday and new years evening.

Varanassi is the oldest town in the world who is still going on - many pilgrims, from all over India, come here to take a holy bath in the Ganges river. So its like street theater - with all respect - like the middle age in Denmark.

Therefore it is so very nice to stay at Pallavi hotel - no street noise at all!! Green, green grass like home in Denmark - USA or UK. The staff is so helpfull and sweet in original indian way. Here you can live in a former Maharaja's palace. Not a fancy one with gold everywhere, but It is very original, with a good restaurant beside. It is old, very old like India herself.

The rickshaws is very close, just outside the hotel, and you can ask for "driver boss" he calls him self "Monkey", because he is vere quick and he is good at english - if you want to see something special, he will help you. He is now too old to drive but he tell the young ones where to drive you.

We bought him a new rickshaw for his income in old age. If you also want to do some charity,- you can buy a rickshaw and give it to an indian guy. It is cheap for european and american people.

You can see foto of Monkey and us in his new rickshaw.
If you want to hear more about how too buy a rickshav just send an email. We recommend you to see evening Puja (ritual at Ganga at night - the rickshaw guy will stay by you during the ceremony and escort you back to hotel,- just ask him to and pay him well for his time. Also we recommend a trip in boat before sunrise on Ganges. It is a must once in a lifetime. Enjoy Varanassi.

We spent 1 night here to view the Varanasi Ghats and were surprised by how helpful and accommodating the staff were. While it was off season, and was the reason given for the pool being empty, the restaurant was excellent and the rooms were good for the price. The AC was noisy, and the decor was a little tired, there was little to fault the hotel.
