Stayed here for one week while attending an academic conference at the university in Varanasi, during January 2013.
My room was clean and the staff were friendly. Breakfast and dinner buffets were good -- and no-one got poorly.
In relation to other western hotels that conference attendees were staying at, I would say it is one of the better hotels in Varanasi. OK, the decor is a little tired, but for India it was fine. Wi-fi did not work in my room but was ok in the lobby (although a little pricey at 6000 rupees for 24 hours)
Some people stayed at local independent hotels down on the Ghats overlooking the Ganges which are more basic but much(!) nicer location and better atmosphere. One issue, we attended in January during (a very unusual) cold snap in the weather, and the local hotels on the Ghats had no heating so people were extremely cold during the night. Clarks hotel was fine.More
