We had a 02 night stay early April in.
Palace on Ganges a misnomer regarding the " Palace," situated on the banks of River Ganges on the south end starting point of the Ghat area, Assi Ghat very accessible by car, and boats to go along the Ganges, which is the only plus point it capitalises on.
The price paid like a 5 star hotel, but had amenities of a cheap Indian lodge, the cheapest soap and shampoo sachets of the cheapest indian quality made for the masses. We were 03 in a room third one had a mattress to sleep on ( not that we did not pay for the third person) , not even a roll-away bed, narrow beds uncomfortable mattresses. The room so tiny loaded with massive furniture, not even a window to look out, one tiny hole which opened into a duct area .
The rooms named after each Indian state , ours was Orissa which no doubt depicted the state with wooden erotic sculptured doors of cupboard . The corridors broad and sit out overlooking the Ganges furnished with antique furniture but hot as hell due to weather, could well get it air cooled!!! for the price the guests are paying.
Breakfast of poor quality, tiny roaches on the chaffing dishes, coffee from a dispensor and fruit stale as ever, one fresh banana would not cost any more in our country where a banana is considered as poor mans food..
For anyone wanting to stay , recommend one night only , to experience the evening Aarti , early morning baths and easy accessibility to boats for rides. Better to choose one of the 4 -5 star in the Mall Cantonment area like the Ramada / Radisson etc , at the same price or even lower , enjoy the luxury of these hotels ambiance, breakfast etc and get an early morning/ late evening ricks to get to the Ghat area,.
We did stay in one of those on our return from Bodhgaya and enjoyed the luxury and also the city of Banaras and shopping for the famous Banaras saris .

There is limit to encashing on its location.

Room Tip: May be the the rooms facing the Ganges.

Just love this hotel for its location.

At the southern end of the ghats, Palace on Ganges offers a quiet haven to the typical chaos. Every room is equally priced, so ask for the Punjab or Colonial Room for the largest room with views of the river. The rooms are double-glazed, but the beds are solid foam and the linen had been pounded on the rocks that much that the pilling made them feel like rough brushed cotton and almost gave me friction burns! The staff were very friendly, but the rooftop cafe was definitely not set up for summer guests, definitely look elsewhere to eat during the summer season (there's a few local places around the corner to the hotel that are really nice that I've reviewed also).

I recommend this hotel if you want quiet and reasonably priced. Otherwise try the guest houses in the northern ghats for the traditional experience in one of the very old buildings.

The rooms are small but clean and well decorated. The location of this hotel at Assi ghat makes it a good choice. It is a 1 min walk to the water and morning boat ride. Bit pricey for India but a safe choice.

Liked this hotel in the southern most ghat on the Ganges. Easy access to the ghats and the river. Stylishly done interiors with rooms featuring themes from various states in India. Clean and well maintained rooms.

'Colonial' room has great decor but is right at the entrance and can be noisy. I liked the 'Rajasthan' and 'Sanchi' rooms the best.

Breakfast was ok. Rooftop restaurant adds a nice touch to this place.

Room Tip: Rooms in the entrance level away from the door though
