The only reason to stay here is the location. The hotel is not bad but small rooms, no views, no breakfast included and much overpriced.Butthe hotel can afford to ask this prices as the location is good and european standards... although in Europe a rm like this should not cost more as 30-35 euro's. Look out for the pizzeria few houses further: Location looks nice but you will definately get ill....

That's the main thing this hotel has to offer. As for the hotel itself, the rooms are small, cramped, dark and stuffy. If any of them has a view of the Ganges, I didn't see it. Our room faced on nothing but a ventilating shaft! The only thing big is the price, which is excessive for what's on offer here. The hotel's "gimmick" is that each room is designed to reflect the style of a different Indian state -- cute, but ...... The rooms are clean, the beds reasonably comfortable. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The most important thing the hotel has to offer is its location on Assi Ghat -- in my opinion, the best place to stay in Varanasi. The nightly aarti on the ghat is worth seeing. The restaurant is decent, though overpriced. (There's no bar, but beer is available on request.) In the evening, the Indian music (sirangi, sitar, tabla) is a pleasant background to dinner.

yes you are on the river and some rooms with views but not ours facing back wall. Asked for view rm if availabe while there for three nights. Didn't happen. room clean staff friendly. Dark gulag basement dining room with mediocre breakfast and dinner. Be aware of TWO WEEKS prior cancellation policy. Tried to get refund for a fourth night that we could not stay two days prior to our arrival but no deal. Of course room booked day we checked out so they can double their money on that room. In some cases The word "heritage" means you'll pay quite a bit more for just a bit more than average.

It has all been said, I think, but here it is again. This is not on the Ganges, but looks out on a parking lot with the river in the distance. It bears no relation to any other heritage property where I have stayed in India.
As I arrived late at night, I had no choice of rooms and I was allocated a rat hole on the roof, room 301, where I had difficulties moving around the bed, and which was roach-infested. So no sleep...
The next day, I was transferred with false apologies to a larger room, which also had roaches and looked onto... an inner common sitting area, with the river in the distance. A dump.
Later I found out that the roaches come from their filthy kitchen (see pictures) and I did not even touch breakfast, which should have been included.
There is a shortage of rooms in Varanasi, and the staff were mostly unconcerned. They are full every night. I could not get in the Ganges View guest house or any of the few others which have excellent reviews. You might have better luck.

Room Tip: Avoid room 301 absolutely. Stay there only if you must

OK, the location is kind of great, right on the banks of the river at Assi Ghat. The room we had booked in advance turned out to a basement-level dark hole. There was a window in it but not getting any daylight. Comming from a 14 hour trainride from Kolkata the negotiations for an other, daylight receiving, room were a bit though. Paying a fair amount for the 4 night stay we thought it was not to much to ask. The location alone does not justifies the steep rate in my opinion because Assi Ghat is at the far end of the string of gahts, so getting to the main ghat or the city takes a 30 or 45 minute walk along the ghats, if the water evel lets you, or a ricksaw ride.
After the cold war over the room was settled the staff was helpfull, the indian breakfast was good, diner at the restaurant was ok, and we had our best veggie pakora's ever in this place. So if you can get your hands on a good located room it is a good place to dive in to Varanasi.

We booked this Heritage Hotel directly through the website, it all worked out well, also the airport transfer by the hotel. After one night in a backside room with no view we got transferred to a impressive tower room No 101 ( with 3 windows ) with Ganga View, thanks to the very helpful front desk manager.
The service and cleanness is good, the roof terrace restaurant OK. Good value for money.
We enjoy our stay.

Chaotic check in was not a good start.

Was offered a room on the main floor just off the reception, this was not acceptable since I was worried there would be lots of guest traffic passing by our room so I insisted on another floor.

We had a room on the second floor. The room was spotless and the bathroom was very clean. Clean, crisp white sheets. Lovely room. There was a small sitting room/library at the end of our 2nd floor corridor where you can sit and look out onto the busy street below.

There is a roof top patio where you can get a nice cold Kingfisher beer. Probably one of the only places on the ghats where you can get a beer.

Breakfast wasn't offered on the roof which is a shame because there is a great view over the Ganges. Breakfast is served in a pokey dark room in the basement so we didn't eat here. We went to eat at a little hotel across the street called Hotel Temple on Ganges. The view from their roof top is THE best on the Ganges. The staff were very good to us even if we weren't staying there.

Probably one of the better hotel along the Ghats however it doesn't mean the service is the best. I found the front desk always in chaos. This is one of the most expensive hotels on the ghats but this is the place to be. If you stay in the bigger, western hotels in the cantonement you will be very far away from everything and the traffic is unbelievable in Varanasi.

Try to go over to Ramnagar Fort if you have some time but go in a car not an auto-rickshaw since the city is very dusty and lots of traffic pollution. It gets hard to breath after a couple of days.

Back to the hotel. The check out was as chaotic as the check in and I was glad to just get away from the hotel front desk.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Palace on Ganges is a new, immaculately clean hotel with 22 rooms, each named for -- and said to be decorated in the style of -- a different region of India. Our rooms were good-sized and well appointed (cable TV sets, non-alcholic mini-bar, tables and chairs). The staff is friendly and attentive. Food is vegetarian and well prepared. The big advantage is Palce on Ganges's location. It is at Asi Ghat, And while it's "on the Ganges," a small road and a large where you can get the cab easily from just out of the hotel. Views of the Ganges from the balcony -- and rooms facing the river (on supplement charges) -- are far less good than those from, among others hotels. Disadvantages: not all rooms face the river. ... more   less
