“a solid option along the river”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

I frequent this hotel several times a year and have grown to love it. It is one of the best options along the river, and is clean and comfortable by most standards. It is the quietest hotel I've stayed in in Varanasi (if you stay away from the entrance/lobby area), and the staff is courteous and quickly attends to any requests. The beds are slightly more comfortable than other places I've stayed, but you should expect a typical Indian bed. They recently started accepting credit cards, which has made payment much easier. The food in the hotel is ok, but it is not the best breakfast you can find in Varanasi. The convenient location in Assi Ghat is desirable. Overall, I've come to appreciate this hotel within the context of the ghats and Varanasi. While over-priced, It is reliable and consistent, and I will stay here again.

This place is about location. It is near one of the first Ghats. You can also rent a boat here where someone will row you all around the ghats. Surprisenly the boy didnt not ask a lot of money for all this work. It is also nice to see varanasi and the ghats via the water. You can walk from there to the right and walk all the way to the last ghats. Roof top cafe is ok net special. luckely if you walk back in the street you will find some nice rooftop restaurants. It is a pleasant area to walk. The hotel looks nice. First room we got had no window.. we refused that and got another one however no nice view. the room is small and not too special. it is clean. Overall Varanasi is a city which is very unique.

I stayed here for five nights in January 2011. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The rooms were fine - I changed rooms in the middle since the hotel wanted to give me a 'better' room. The restaurant was reliable for very good, nicely presented food, but it is served in Jain fashion. This means much less spices (for example no onion or garlic) than you get in most Indian restaurants. One evening I returned late and they stayed open late to serve my dinner. One of the restaurant supervisors is studying Jainism and he spent quite a lot of time chatting about what he is learning. The desk was ok, but at times I thought they were not very well informed, or perhaps they just didn't want to take the time to help. I would have no problem staying in this hotel again given that it was clean, pleasant, and in a very appealing location.

Room Tip: The most basic room in the hotel is above the rooftop dining room - it is not nearly as appealing as...

A heritage hotel with well decorated and maintained rooms and general areas very close to the ganges and very close to some real India so have a stroll around the dining room does alcohol the nearest restaurant does not. Staff were very helpful and we ate here both in the dining room and on the roof top cafe with no problems at all we liked the Pakoda so much we took some for the train. Enjoyed the stay the view the food and the staff.

The hotel is situated at the Assi Ghat of Ganga. You walk only 1 minute to reach the banks of the holy river.

The hotel really looks like a small palace with nice furniture and renovated rooms. The staff is trying hard to make u feel comfortable but the hotel doesnt have a dining room. So you have to eat in the non AC hotel floor outside the rooms or in your room (without window).

This hotel is situated right on Assi Ghat which was amazing as it allowed me to see and experience so much during my time in Varanasi. If you are not feeling adventurous, you can sit on the rooftop and watch the world go by whilst having a drink or some food. It is a lovely place to relax and you can see all the action.

My room was nice, clean and had hot water (reliable hot water which is rare in India) and the staff were friendly enough. They were helpful when I was asking for directions or an average cost for a taxi ride to different areas of town.

The breakfast was quite decent, I didn't tire of it. All in all, a lovely little hotel with cute rooms named after different Indian regions which I thought was quite nice. It is right in the heart of the Ganges and where you want to be to get a true Varanasi experience!

We spent 2 nights in this hotel and had a lovely room on the second floor at the front of the hotel with views over the river. The food (vegetarian only) was very good and well priced and the restuarant staff were great. The breakfast was very basic. Unfortunately our staywas let down by the house keeping staff who were unfriendly, looked very shabby and expected a tip for avery little thing. The front desk staff were also very inefficient, and not particularly interested in helping with generaal queries. We were also asked to fill in a customer satisfaction survey form when checking out, in front of the people about whom we had complaints - very uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for the Colonial room

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Palace on Ganges is a new, immaculately clean hotel with 22 rooms, each named for -- and said to be decorated in the style of -- a different region of India. Our rooms were good-sized and well appointed (cable TV sets, non-alcholic mini-bar, tables and chairs). The staff is friendly and attentive. Food is vegetarian and well prepared. The big advantage is Palce on Ganges's location. It is at Asi Ghat, And while it's "on the Ganges," a small road and a large where you can get the cab easily from just out of the hotel. Views of the Ganges from the balcony -- and rooms facing the river (on supplement charges) -- are far less good than those from, among others hotels. Disadvantages: not all rooms face the river. ... more   less
