We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Rivatas - we stayed for 2 nights.

The hotel is about 10 minutes away from the Varanasi junction railway station. About 15~20 minutes to the ghat, depending on which ghat you go to.

A lot of auto rickshaws are in front of the hotel so you can negotiate.... (we didn't really have any problems but IF they don't give you the price you want or if they are not around, you can walk down to the JHV mall (1 minute away from the hotel - walk west), there are heaps of taxi/auto rickshaws there. We asked the hotel to pick us up from the train station first but their asking price was 600 rupees!!!!! so we just got a rickshaw at the train station and paid A LOT less (on average, you can go to the train station for 80 rupees from the hotel - but make sure to let them know which entrance you want to go, front or gate).

The breakfast was really good - wide variety...

Room was clean and spacious. They had a small fridge in the room but it wasn't really cold. The wifi works fine in the room. But they charge 150 rupees for 24 hours.

There is a swimming pool but the construction work is going on around the pool, so we didn't use it.

Overall it was a nice clean hotel. Customer service was pretty good, especially the restaurant staff (I wouldn't say all of them.. but most of them were quite nice). The only exception was the concierge lady who we asked about the restaurant recommendation and told us 'go to the mall, there are lots of nice restaurants' so we went - Mall only has McDonald's, Pizza hut & small dark food court with 4 or 5 shops. Clearly, she wasn't trying.... oh well.

I stayed in this hotel from 1st Arpil 2014 to 4th April 2014 with my family. Total 3 nights. I would say everything was just fine. We had a warm welcome. The room given to us was upto the mark, neat, clean and bigger. The food was good. ALL the staff was always courteous and helpful. In fact the food staff always prepared extra items for us which was not there in their menu on that particular day. The Travel staff, the Reception staff ALL were very nice. We had Kashi Darshan very nicely in the morning with great ease. We never faced any hassle. Everything was arrange by this hotel. Evening Aarti too, was with ease. Housekeeping too, visited at our preferable time. In other words i would recommend this hotel as one would regret if not visited. Thanks to Mr. KUMAR UJJWAL, the Manager, who always replied my emails and calls promptly before visiting, and also arranged for the best of services while our visit. Mr. Sadik too, was very courteous and eager to serve us. Mr. Tauseef at Travel desk was always helpful. Overall it was a memorable visit.

Room Tip: We were on third floor. It was a quiet atmosphere. No disturbance at all.

Food is decent, little pricey for Varanasi but I guess you pay for the ambience. Location is fairly central if one is there as a tourist, equidistance from sarnath and the ghats. Staff is helpful, look for Restaurant Manager Phillip, he is helpful. Shops in the Hotel as always are way over-priced, probably for the many foreign tourists that stay here. Swimming pool needs to be maintained, locker facility non-existent and dirty, perhaps everybody prefers swimming in the Ganga than in the Hotel Pool.

I stayed hear for 3 nights. March 29 to 1st april 2014.

We tried to book initially for just ONE night via expedia, whilst awaiting our flight at London Heathrow, web site errored and said booking had NOT processed try again we did so a second time and got same response.

So we used cleartrip and successfully booked ONE room for ONE night.

5 mins later we got 2 emails from expedia stating both bookings had now processed....annoyed we rang expedia they said that we could have a full refund for both bookings and that as our flight was now boarding to do it at the hotel....happy with this we continued our trip.

When arriving at Rivitas it was a very nice hotel a good example of a typical 3 STAR. Menial staff..doorman, bellboy etc are really nice.

When at reception we started to mention the booking issue and staff became very hostile stating that they didnt care as far as they concerned we had booked for 3 rooms all on same night and that we could NOT have a refund....we suggested that they could either do the refund as per expedias request or alternatively they could amend the extra two rooms for the following two nights...again they refused... so we stated we would stay one night and get expedia to sort it out in the morning.
The hotel said they would call expedia and help us resolve the issue, we gave them the telephone number and retired to our room.
The room we were given was a twin. This was not to our liking so they moved us to a very nice double bed suite.
The room was pleasant, light and airy. Good AC, very basic toiletries. But very good.
That night when we went to dinner the manager advised us he had SPOKEN with expedia and that neither company was willing to issue a refund...he then demanded are bank card to cover our stay...we refused advising him we had pre paid 3 times for our one night stay.

The hote staff the next morning were just as bad..again stating that expedia were the problem and that expedia needed to deal with it..they claimed to have spoken to expedia...yet when we put them to the challange of calling them in our presence the manager didnt know the number or how to dial the uk...This was just another proof of the hotels lying ways....after forcing them to deal with the issue and expedia repeatidly telling them to issue a refund and spending nearly 2 hours arguing with them....they eventually refunded us....

I found their attitude stupid....all they had to do at the start was transfer the extra bookings to day 2 and 3 of our trip....but they wernt happy with 3 days money...instead they wanted 5 night money for a 3 night stay.

The hotel was reasonably priced. food was ok...atmosphere was bland as not many guests...hence the pushy service and rip of nature.....this could have been a nice place but management bring it down.....

Everything about the hotel is about ripping guests off....the internet is crap....extremely slow.

The tours and taxis are rushed...we booked a car for 12.30...tour desk then claimed sarnath didnt open till afternoon and that we had to wait till after 1 for taxi....he then wanted us to go to the bar or restaurant...we didnt want too and when it became apparant we wernt going to spend any money at hotel our car arrived and took us...we paid for a 4 hour taxi to sarnath we got 30 min trip there same back...susposed to get 3 hours there...but all we got was driver rushing us and only giving us 1 hour.

The hotel wont let you charge stuff to your room instead demanding payment for each transation....this is very annoying...we ate in the restaurant on 3 occasions each time spending 4-5000 rupees..... we also had many drinks in the bar...I think we personally spent more than an other guest...yet the treated us like scum....what did they think we were gonna do...run off without paying and leave our bags behind.....their attitude and guest treatment is a reflection of what they are like....thieves and scum...and they assume others are like them....well sorry but im a respectable well off uk traveler....I come to India many times a year with my indian partner and we have never had such bad service.

As soon as you get to hotel...its a pushy service to eat and drink and spend....I didnt come to varanassi to just stay in a hotel....

Same issues with taxi for boat tour the next day.

When checking out they tried charging us for extras we hadnt had....so check your bill....

When we paid we didnt have 2 rupees in coins. ..they made such a hoohar about us having to pay every penny. .yet when we gave them 20 rupees they conveniently didnt have any change for us.

I would not recommend this hotel...after check out on way to airport I was really sick so didnt want to fly so checked in to ramada.....now thats what I call a nice hotel.

Thanks for giving your feedback on tripadvisor.com. And a detail investigation was done and we came with the following outcomes.

First I would like to give response on the points which you have written in the review and then I will go on some point which you have not mentioned
1. At the first point you’d mentioned that Expedia.com accepted to refund you, and then you should have asked Expedia for the refund NOT from the hotel. The hotel got a confirmed booking of yours through Expedia for which you had paid to Expedia not to the hotel. The hotel did not have to do anything in monetary terms for the rooms as far as the guest is confirmed. The problem started when you asked for the refund from the hotel which we declined at the time of check-in itself.
2. The staff on your check in or in the night never accepted to call the Expedia on your given wrong number rather he asked some time to discuss the same with the senior management. And the same was informed to you in the evening that we could not refund you. You abused the Expedia.com and the lady staff at the reception. Had you not been the guest through Expedia, we would have thrown you out of the hotel & handed over to the police.
3. Next day you came at the reception and again asked for the refund which the manager denied. Again you gave a wrong number of Expedia for your communication which was not valid.
4. Each time our steward in the restaurant/lounge asked you – Sir/Madam, how would you like to settle the bills and you preferred paying cash, the choice was yours. If we would have treated you like scum would have taken full advance for the room charges you stayed extra nights.
5. You had inquired about the best time to go to Sarnath which our travel desk staff advised you. The cab was given for sightseeing to Sarnath within a time span of 3 hours including going and coming back, It was not given to spent all 3 hours in a Temple only in the given tariff.
6. On your check out you paid gave Rs. 20 currency instead of Rs.2 and when the cashier was returning the balance you asked him to keep the change.

Now I will bring some more points in the notice of the other readers and the guests whom you are trying to fool.

1. When our manager denied refunding the money you started shouting and using abusive language for all the Indian Hotel and Indian in spite your partner is also an Indian. Many guests in the lobby complaint on this attitude of yours.
2. 03 auto rickshaw drivers came during your three days stay in the hotel searching for you because you did left them waiting in the parking near River Ganges without paying them and came back to hotel by another auto rickshaw. This was really very cheap on your part. How could you do this to poor auto rickshaw driver Shahid.
3. After our denial of refunding the money you did damages in the room, and above all did potty on the floor of the room and in the Shower area of the bathroom just before the check out and covered all this with the bath towel. Shame on people like you.
We have written this kind of response from our side so that the guests and the readers should know both sides of the story and the ACTUAL truth should be brought in front of them.

I booked at this hotel and when I booked the expexia website crashed on payment....and told me to try again.....so I did...it happened again....so i booked successfully on cleartrip...to my suprise 3 mins later i got three emails two from expedia and one from cleartrip...all saying that i had booked a room on the 29th March for two people....in effect EVEN though the website crashed i had booked and paid for three rooms for one night...

I called Expedia and they told me as it was non refundable from the hotel they could not refund me but if i contacted the hotel they would...as why would i need three rooms for two people on the same night?

When i arrived at the hotel and mentioned it to them...they said they could not refund me...and it was an expedia issue...

What happened next was lies lies and more lies....i told them to call expedia they said they had...but were caught out lying when the manager didnt know how to dial an international number....

They acknowledged that it was a mistake....but they didnt want to refund us...as we had to stay for three nights...they told us to pay for another two....in effect paying for 5 nights but staying for three.....

Was not going to happen...they kept refusing our refund...it was only after two hours of arguing that the General Manager said ok...as a scene was being caused in front of other customers.

It was a website mistake they could have just said ok...here is your refund...as you have booked three times or lets use each of your bookings for each day you are here....rather than refusing to do anything...

This hotel is good but there lying theiving ways are very bad....they count down to the last rupee....on checkout i owed him 2 rupees from our bill of 15602 rupees....he made an issue out of it...when i gave him 20 no movement to give change back....

STOP THE BAD SERVICE...STOP THE PENNY PINCHING WAYS....STOP SPOILING PEOPLES HOLIDAYS

Varanasi is one of those places people (tourists) incl myself will only visit once in a lifetime....there is probably no chance of a repeat visit for most people...the hotel realise this and there attitude is we dont care....we got your money...you are not coming back anyway...

On the way back to the airport...the missus was ill...so we changed flights for the following day...and went back to Cantonement...and checked in at the Ramada...same price just a MUCH MUCH BETTER HOTEL....at the Ramada you get the international five star standard

Come on Rivatas...STOP CHEATING YOUR CUSTOMERS.

They will probably deny this...but i can prove it........

GENUINE MISTAKES SHOULD BE DEALT WITH FAIRLY DO NOT TAKE SOMEONES MISFORTUNE TO PROFITEER....NEVER EXPECTED THIS ...MARRED THE HOLIDAY.

This new hotel is very modern and comfortable. It's located in the Cantonment area, away from the river bank, which means it's quiet and in a very safe area. The amenities were excellent and the room was kept very clean. Front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet was very good, with lots of choices, including both Indian and western food. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed for 2 days with my family and celebrated the birthday of my younger kid at their restaurant, Our suite was chic, neat and very peaceful. The room is accompanied by all necessary and luxury amenities one could think of. The staff is courteous and prompt, always at your service with a smile. The location of the hotel is very good. Far from the maddening crowd of Varanasi. The food served at the restaurant is very delicious. A must recommend to all fellow travelers.
