visited the ganga aarti show last night. unfortunately I could not appreciate the show as it was hot and crowded and sitting on a mat was uncomfortable. We didn't go on the water as the levels were too high. This review is in no way meant to denegrade the sacred place and hurt anyones religious feelings. I think after a week of travelling through India I am just ready to leave. The walk through the alleys to get there was good, but to the uninitiated travellers it can be just too much. Dead dogs lying in the middle of the road, people sleeping anywhere and everywhere, the constant harassment for everything. Had I known the river was as high as it was and boat rides on the river were not possible I probably would have avoided Varanasi.

We spent 3 days in Varanasi & I just loved it - but it is not for everyone, I feel. The poverty is horrendous & can be very upsetting. Unfortunately the Ganges was extremely high at the time we were there due to the monsoon, & 160 steps were under water - we still loved wandering through the alleys - so much to take in.

Varanasi , a small yet one of most visited place in india established on the shores of Holy river ganga (ganges), with beautiful Ghats ,just sit on the ghats silently and rediscover yourself , in fact one can experience the art of living of the people residing near the ghats its strange that in spite of the crowd on the ghats one can experience mystic silence and quietness that you can even hear the sound of the river , The best place to visit the ghats is morning and evening and even mid afternoon also if SUN permits , the dasaswamedh ghat is known for the Ganga Aarti which takes place near 7 or 7.30 pm .. every evening . The main purpose of the aarti is to thank godess ganga for her water , resources and blessings in the form of employment and prosperity to the fishermen and other people whose daily livelihood revolves around this holy river.... a must place to visit Ioved varanasi ghats and wish anyone else would. yet no place in this world is perfect ,there are good people and bad people so beware of the later ones .....wish you a great visit .

HAving visited the "holy" city of varnasi, I am convinced that the people who are supposed to uphold the traditions of "holiness " are the people who are the negative ambassadors for the town. From the Pandas who do the rituals on the 'Ghats', to the purohits in the temples, they have fine-tuned the selling of religion to a fine art. They can put any psychologist to shame , the way the prey on your conscience and make you voluntarily surrender your money to them it's worth seeing to believe.
The food if you know the right place will be good. stick to vegetarian you will not be disappointed.
