Kashi Vishwanath temple, Vishwanath Gali Chowck, Varanasi, is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga in India. This temple is on walking distance from Dasawamedh Ghat on Riven Ganges. History says that this holy temple has been visited by great saints like Adi Shankaracharya, Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand, Goswami Tulsidas, Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Gurunanak and several other spiritual personalities.
Temple in the present shape was built in 1780 by Late Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore. Two domes of the Temple were covered by gold donated by Punjab Kesari Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. That is why this temple is also known as Golden temple. Hindus believe that before entering into Vishwanath temple, they must first visit Temple of Kaal Bhairav (about 2kms away from Vishwanath temple). After Vishwanath Darshan, Hindus believe that Darshan of Kedarnath should be done. Thus by going to these three temples in the order shown, they are sure to get maximum blessings.
Very tight security is there at Kashi Vishwanath temple. One can not carry even a writing pen. Mobile phones, camera, matchbox, lighter, any kind of hand bags, coconuts etc are prohibited. One can carry only flowers and milk or water for Abhishek of Lord Shiva. Best time to go there is at 4am because the waiting line is minimum. Morning 6am to 9am is very busy time. The temple opens from 4am to 11pm. daily. Saturdays and Sundays and Public Holidays are also busy days. We went on 30 april and also on !st May. Were really lucky to have Darshans easily and without much of wait.
There are number of shops outside the temple who offer free locker facility in their shop. You can leave your belongings and shoes there, buy flowers from them, and on your return collect your stuff.
