“not a taj experience at all....SMALL rooms”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

with such small cage like rooms.......it was not a taj quality at all....we were made to pay high
and given the most depressing, souless room i've ever stayed in my life.and extremely small.i felt claustrophobic....during the day the lobby n reception area is very chaotic n crowded.its only the morning time that is peaceful......their garden n pool is good though.pool is very beautiful in fact .staff is good.
those who know what a taj hotel experience is would be disappointed ...

Room Tip: go for the superior room...if you have to go anyway.

We were torn between staying somewhere inside the old city (near the Ganges) versus staying here, and we're both so happy that we picked this place. After exploring the old city and the ghats all day, you REALLY want a break - Varanasi is an amazing place, but it's also one of the dirtiest cities in India that I've ever been in. Our room was spacious and the shower was amazing - the service was fantastic and we enjoyed our meals at the hotel restaurants (the buffet breakfast in particular is great). The hotel facilities are not modern per se, but it's still a great place to stay. General advice: bring an air filter mask and wear it when you are riding in tuk tuks.

This was my second visit in last two years, and found to be deteriorated in standards from my previous stay.Rooms still remains the same but services on all fronts had deteriorated. What brought me back to the hotel was its personalized and at toes service.Unfortunately i missed it heavily and also missed Mr Devanajan(reception) who just made wonders for me in my first stay at the hotel.

Even though this hotel is modest it is one of the bests in town. Varanasi is a very filthy and unorganized city that its importance is due to the Ganges River.
We stayed in a suite, big comfortable room.
Breakfast and dinner were good, waiters very attentive.

A fantastic place to stay, with staff that were superb. The food at the restaurants is simply magnificient, with the only negative of our stay being that we were woken by noisy neighbours on a couple of occasions.

The typical range of touts lurk at the front gate, but this is to be expected and generally we consider this to be part of the fun. Hotel staff are more than willing to organise other transport options.

Went to Varanasi for a business trip and was put up at The Gateway. I heard many stories of the hotel and the associated stories of the Maharaja - who is the actual owner of the entire real estate. Time has changed, but this place still carries the heritage.
Hotel is bit far from the Varanasi Airport - and is connected by a single road. So, if you got a flight to catch, do check-out early.
It appears to be secured and well managed. Staffs appear mostly polished. The lift is bit old - but blends nice with the old gearana/ambience created by the surroundings. :)
Rooms are quite good - standard! Internet is available as wi-fi is offered - but for a premium.
Food options are in abundance, shouldn't be a problem.

Overall a good experience. But bit pricy!

We stayed three days at this hotel. It's a nice establishment, removed from the bustling and vibrantly chaotic streets of Varanasi. The staff were very helpful and the rooms are serviced daily. We came home this evening to rose petals on the bed and a beautiful vase of lilies. The hotel is very clean, includes an endless supply of bottled water, and is relaxing (no horns!). The only thing I found lacking was the quality of food. It's rather bland and all desserts taste pre-packaged, but I'm a foodie and picky and was fed like a king last week while at a Hindu wedding in Delhi. Consider yourself a fortunate soul if you find yourself in Varanasi, it is truly magical. :)
