yoga mandir at first you may think oh what a lovley ashram. a spiritual haven, pleasant enough courtyard, but if you stay there long enough you may get to witness some of the most disgusting hospitality I've seen i'n India.

Dr. Peetambar and his family welcomed the 5 of us very warmly to Yoga Mandir. They were accommodating and obliging on all levels. We stayed in a few hotels in Varanasi before discovering Mandir and it was a cut above the rest for our price range. It's got the basics covered: clean rooms, good food, peaceful atmosphere. Highly recommended.

I thought I loved every bit of Varanasi... turnes out I didn't like staying at Sri Yoga Mandir. And I don't think anyone I talked to did either. I, together with my classmates staying at the Mandir, were thrown out when we didn't let the owner's friends stay in one of our rooms. The room in question was already paid for and the girl staying there was currently out of town, however she was still paying for it and planned to be back after just one weekend. The owner was furious when we didn't let his friends stay in her room (so he could get double rent for it) with her things lying there. He threatened us promising he would call the police if we didn't leave the place right away. Thanks to our hindi teacher we managed to get rooms at another hostel (very nice, by the way!) and get the money back for the nights we couldn't stay at Yoga Mandir. We were staying there for several weeks and all had been pre paid. In the price food was included, but in order for the owner to save even more money we got lousy and really cheap food. The guests (really few) that came only to have a meal at the restaurant (just a long, dirty table with flies on it) got to choose from a menu which had the standard dishes on it.
The place claimed to be all organic. This was not true either. The owner had an employee who's main work task was to kill all kinds of lizards (that really didn't bother anyone of the guests) and other animals who was considered to disturb the owner. When the owner made his employee cage a wild bird just for the fun of it he really couldn't understand why we objected.
All of my friends that also was staying there had been to India several times and even lived there. No one had stayed at a place this aggressive and hypocritic.
I only have one advice to people who are thinking of staying there: DON'T! There are so many nice places in Varanasi that is situated by the river Ganga, where you can enjoy your morning yoga, chat with the owners, learn hindi and have a wonderful experience. But the Yoga Mandir is no such place.

Room Tip: Choose a room situated in another hostel :)

Our room at the Sri Yoga Mandir was cell-like, barren and airless. There was not a single picture on the walls, and the two very small windows were covered with glued-on brown paper (no curtains). The window that overlooked the garden, which might have permitted some cross-ventilation, was unscreened, so it couldn’t be left open without inviting the company of a horde of mosquitoes and gnats. There was hot water, but not in the shower, so the only option was a bucket-bath. The plumbing was inadequate, so toilet paper could not be flushed, but had to be tossed into a wastebasket. To make that situation even worse, the arrangements for room cleaning were inadequate – the one person hired to clean simply didn’t turn up for a couple of days, and I had to be very persistent to finally (around dinnertime) get the owner to come and make up the bed (and then I had to call him back to empty the smelly bathroom wastebasket). The kitchen served good food, though with a limited menu, but there were no indoor tables – just a single, long, often fly-ridden table on the patio. The worst shock came as we were leaving, and were told that the room-rate we’d been quoted had been increased by a jaw-dropping fifty percent to cover our use of the a/c! As a final “parting gift,” after we’d left the Sri Yoga Mandir I discovered that my suitcase had been rifled through and a hundred dollars stolen from it (my guess is that the culprit was the unexpectedly-absent housekeeper, but I’ll never know). There are much better alternatives, in more convenient locations and at better rates. You don’t want to stay here!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms have access to the balcony
