“Fabulous position”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

This was a great position and we had a stunning view from our bedroom, the courtyard was a haven of peace in this frenetic city. The staff, however were not great and the restaurant service, slow, inefficient and the quality of food mediocre. It all felt a bit amateurish and lacking in care. however the location unique so for this reason would go again.

Room Tip: Ask for a Ganges-view room. Fabulous waking up to this

We so wanted to love this place, and having read all the reviews significantly lowered our expectations prior to arrival, but not enough. Yes, the location is great & the rooms spacious & the courtyard lovely. Offsetting this is the ridiculous prices (from the $300 room to the bowl of rice for $6 to a bottle of water for $3 when you can walk outside and it's 40 cents or a basket of bread for $6 that consisted of some of the worst tasting naan I've ever had. And I'm an upbeat optimistic guy! I feel like I've been had!. It's like they know they have you in a corner. Unfortunately, the staff is one of the biggest downsides, including an opinionated rude GM, unpredictable and at times very inattentive wait staff, an embarrassing excuse for a breakfast (cheap bread, tasteless omelets, instant coffee packets & lassis that may or may not show up on any given morning--they didn't this morning) and a Wi-Fi system totally random & unpredictable as to when it will work & when it won't. The Staff may or may not be at the front desk at any given time, their directions to other places were vague & virtually guaranteed to get us lost, and because of it's location, it's hard to walk out & easily find other alternatives for eating nearby. They strongly discourage you using any services (i.e taxi) other than their own. How a hotel can charge what they do in one of the poorest, dirtiest cities in India is truly a wonder....oh yeah, that location thing....expect to be disappointed! If the room rates & prices were 40% cheaper and a new GM was brought on board, they'd have happier guests & much better reviews....that's the saddest part, this SHOULD be the best place to stay in Varanasi, and it's not.

Room Tip: Make sure you know what you're getting into when you choose to visit Varanasi....and btw, you wi...

When I initially booked a hotel in Varanasi, I thought I'd save some money and stay in another, much cheaper - but highly rated - guest house along the river. When we showed up there was no running water, the room smelled terrible and there were dead bugs all over the place. I was not happy. We couldn't we use the internet to find another hotel because the promised wi-fi didn't work either. So we decided to go for a walk and ended up walking right past the Suryauday Haveli. On a whim, we walked in and were relieved to find a room free. No dead bugs. Working plumbing and wi-fi. In fact, a very nice place.

Is it perfect? No. We wanted to hire a car and driver to go to Sarnath for the day and they would arrange a car for a short stay - I think it was 3, maybe 4 hours - but absolutely no longer. They had a set menu of 4 tour types that you could book and would not help at all to arrange a car for something else, so we had to find a car and driver ourselves. No big deal, just something to be aware of so you plan ahead.

Varanasi is not the easiest or most relaxing place to travel so having a nice hotel made the stay a little more manageable. In short, if you want to stay near the river and can afford the extra cost of this place, I'd highly recommend it.

Lets face it if you are going to brave the stark beauty of Varanassi then you are going to want to be on the water at dawn drifting down the Ganges, alone with the boatman and the creaking oars and then strolling the Ghatts immersed and captivated by the challenges of life in full colour contrasted with the stark reality of the 24hr open crematoria. Here you witness the cycle of life as you walk the bank of the mighty river Ganges.
This hotel is simply the answer. No its not perfect but what is. Chances are your transport will stop short of the destination as the lanes narrow as you approach the Ghatts and vehicles can simply go no further. No problem a call to the hotel produces staff who graciously carry your luggage down the lanes to your destination with you following on behind dodging cattle and two wheeled traffic as you go.
Check in was courteous and surprisingly efficient in this country of delay and a river view room rewards with river views over the Ganges and shore and life on the Ghatt below.
The food choices are essentially all Indian but well executed. The breakfast all though adequate is rather limited in comparison to many other breakfast buffets but the service is brisk and friendly. It may also be appreciated to understand that there is no alcohol available either in the minibar in the rooms or available in the restaurant so if the thought of a cold beer after being confronted by life in the raw after a sweltering day walking the Ghatts then take your own into this destination.
The bottom line is you can't get closer than taking the internal steps down through the hotel and stepping out onto the Shivalli Ghatt and experiencing the wonder that is Varanassi.
Reccomended.

Room Tip: River view but anywhere close to the balcony entrance will get you a view early morning or late at n...

When we planned to go to Varanasi we were a little but worried about staying far from the ghat and to spend a lot o f time in the traffic. But then we found the Suryauday Haveli right on Shivala ghat. A little bit expensive, but a smart choice. Some time to get there but then no more problem with moving around. Since it was not so easy to reach we booked the transfer from the hotel. Not really a gift. The Hotel is an ancient haveli beautifully restored. We had a very nice room with a beautiful view on the ghat and on the sunrise. The room was a little bit cold but with an extra blanket and an heater everything was ok. Dinner was very good while the breakfast was so and so. They offered a free boat ride in the evening and they took us to the Ceremony on the Gange. A real experience. In the morning we could easily, walk all the way along the ghat. We were just sorry we spent only one night there. Varanasi is dirty, unhealthy and foggy but … it is magic.

Room Tip: Take a room with a view on the Gange.

Positiv is the location at the Ganges river and also the roof terrasse.

Negative:
- Price / Quality ratio is very poor. You pay the place and not the standard of the hotel. There must be cheaper hotels at the Ganges river that offer almost similar service.
- Toilets / bath was very smelly (big issues with canalisation)
- The elderly female receptionist did not give us the impression that we were warmly welcome. Furthermore there were clear miscommunication / misunderstanding re taxi rates etc. Not the support we expected and they saw no need to improve this situation during our stay. competent and not really friendly.

For us a disappointing experience after only positive experiences in India (see our other India feedbacks that we provided). We would not return to this hotel anymore.
