going from the airport was ok until we arrived closer. the taxi driver didn't know the hotel. you should mention Shivala Ghat, it might be easier.we walked from the main street to the hotel more than we should have.
hotel welcome was nice, maybe trying too hard (but that is personal preference).
room was ok. not a 5 star of course, more like 3, but you pay for location. I believe that any 5 star like hotels will be too big of a contast between varanasi and your room, so this hotel is perfect for this reason. nice and clean in perfect location. worth the price.
roof terrace was nice. yoga in the morning in the relatively fresh air and jumping monkeys around you was good.
food was reasonably nice, nothing amazing. very nice live music in the evening. we also ate at great keban factory in the Raddison hotel. that was amazing. still thinking of the minced lamb kebab.

At the very outset, let me warn you that the old part of the city of Benares aka Varanasi or Kashi is quite congested, chaotic and filthy. So to find a nice, clean , peaceful , beautifully located hotel was a pleasant surprise . I was a bit apprehensive of the hotel after seeing the chaos and dirt of the city while on our way from the airport, but my fears were expelled on reaching the hotel.

While arriving they ask you to go to Assi Ghat, from where they ferry you by boat to the Haveli ( 5-7 mins). They probably do this so that you can experience a bit of the life near the ghats and also so that you don't have to approach the hotel through the narrow alley ways from the main road. On check in we were allotted room # 102 , which was a riverview room, smallish but could accommodate the 3 of us. You should try and book a Riverview room to experience the serenity of the Ganges in the early morning and the gentle stirring of life on the ghats as dawn breaks.

Of course you could do the same from the common balcony or the terrace of the hotel, but that would not be an option if you want to watch the sunrise from the comfort of your bed.

The hotel serves Indian vegetarian food which is very tasty and delicious . If you wish to have a change you are about 5 mins. Walk away from 2 restaurants I:ba ( Japenese & Chinese ) and Bread of life ( Continental and Bakes ). Suryauday Haveli does not serve alcohol, but they don't mind if you consume it in the confines of your room.

The staff , right from the reception, to the restaurant and housekeeping are very helpful with suggestions and tips on where to go etc. If you require any detailed information you can always approach the knowledgeable GM, Mr. Tapas Das for help in making your sightseeing itinerary .

The hotel offers a complimentary boat ride every evening to see the Aarti at the Dashwamedh Ghat.

All in all a good option to stay in the old city and the location and the views are not to be found in any of the other big hotels. Truly the place to stay to experience the city.

In my opinion this is the only place to stay in Varanasi. We were collected by boat to avoid some of the heavy traffic and we were enchanted by our three days. The staff were incredibly helpful including the young boatman who took us on many trips during our three day stay. The staff were helpful and charming and our room was lovely with a wonderful view of the river. We enjoyed all the food we had at the Suryauday Haveli and have some wonderful memories of the Ganges. Sitting on the rooftop terrace was totally relaxing in a very hectic city.

Room Tip: Pay extra to have a river facing room.

The superb location of this property would be the only reason to stay at this hotel. It is situated on the Shivla Ghat with views of the Ganges and that is wonderful. Because of its location on the ghat, it is necessary to walk on small lanes to get to the hotel, or it can be reached on boats from the riverside.
Rooms are small and basic, tea and coffee making facilities and a welcome basket of fruit and cashew nuts where provided. Complimentary bedroom slippers disappeared after the first night.
The Manager and Front Office Reception were very unfriendly but the general staff were very willing and kind. The restaurant serves an adequate breakfast and very delicious dinners with delightful classical music. The hotel's room and food cost is far more expensive that what is offered, what you are paying for at Suryauday Haveli is the location and if the location on the ghat is very important, put everything aside and give it a go, if not, for better service and accommodation I would recommend either the Radisson or the Gateway Hotel

Varanasi is quite a difficult city to navigate, but if you stay at this hotel, you can really have a great experience. Make no mistake, this is a pricey hotel. We were picked up with no probles at the sirport quite late, and deposited right in the welcoming arms of the lobby staff. The rooms are OK, clean and comfortable, but nothing special. But oh my goodness, the staff were all great. Not an unfriendly one in the bunch. Sure, sometimes the room wasn't done, but a quick word, and people leapt into action. A full Breakfast arrived with steaming pots of Chai and coffee, in just such a way that we had a leisurely time emerging from our morning sheeplike countenance, to full on 'let's go explore'!. Didn't really need luch after such a hefty breakfast either. For the traveler interested in the inner workings of the Hindu culture, this hotel puts you right in the hub. At 430am, we would go up to the roof, and watch the faithful come to bathe in mother Ganges. Chanting swirled around us, and the monkeys who live on the rooftops began their morning chattering and scampering. The hotel has a boat, which took us (for no cost I must add), down to the big famous ghats where a gazillion people and boats were enjoying the Divali celebrations. It was mesmerizing, and I was so happy I had a riverside view and didn't have to wade thru the warren of streets and crowds of people to get there. Other reviews did not see this hotel as a treat. Well, we saw more expensive places on ghats that were very much more crowded with hawkers, but if you want to be right on the Shivala ghat, with your own private Shiva temple, and if you want to be able to stand on the roof at dawn and look across mother ganges as the sun rises, and if you want to be within walking distance of every interesting thing there is to see in Varanasi, and if you want to return to a welcoming staff, then this is your place. PS, We swam in the ganges, and it was great, and no we did not get sick. Try it. The blessings are tremendous!

Room Tip: I am not sure whether or not the ganges view rooms are really better. We did not have one, but that...

Varanasi was the highlight of my holiday in India and one of the best experiences was sitting on the roof terrace watching life on the banks of the Ganges and listening to the chanting from the nearby Hindu temple.
Apart from the location I was unimpressed with the hotel. The courtyard was pleasant and the room adequate. However the catering was rather bland. This is partly to do with the rules of no meat or alcohol by the Ganges, but the food quality could definitely have been improved.

Room Tip: Don't bother with a Ganges view room. Just spent time on the roof terrace for a great experience...

A great hotel , but hard to find. The service is great and the rooms are great, location is the best. Situated at the bottom end of Varanisi. This is a must stay at Hotel. The only issue we had was finding it quite a walk from the road and our taxi driver had no idea where it was. They need to have an airport pick up service, suggest you ring them from the airport and get this sorted up front avoids dodging the cow dung, motor bikes and people with your bangs is not a great proposition after a long flight when you have no idea where u r going. Spoke to the Management about it and they need to do something about it !!The cost of a taxi from airport is 860 Rp but twice that the other way round ?The hotel is expensive but the location is worth it the food is average the staff are amazing

Room Tip: Bottom story, get better (bigger) window view of the river
