“Something Very Very Special”

When we were planning our trip to Varanasi, choosing a place to stay was proving to be rather challenging. we wanted to stay on the river but did not want to trek through miles of narrow lanes or compromise on quality to be on the Ghats. I came across Surya Uday haveli by chance (eople managing the property should work on improving the web presence and visibility) - and from that point onwards it was an experience worth every minute of it.

Making a resevation by contacting their Bangalore office was not only easy, it was a pleasure. No question or request was too trivial or difficult for them.

Next we looked for a contact at the hotel to sort out our arrival details as we were arriving by an early morning train from Delhi. From the first phone call I made to Mr Kedar Ghosh I felt that I was visiting the home of an Indian friend or family rather than a hotel. On the morning of our arrival Mr Ghosh made it a point to be there personally (at 5 AM) to ensure that we had no difficulty in finding our car and we reached the hotel safely.

Our next surprise was meeting Mr Aman Bhandari (General Manager) at the hotel. It felt like he took it upon himself to ensure that we had an unforgettabe stay at the Haveli. Mr Bhandari, Mr Ghosh and Mr Arvind from the reception deserve all the praise for making the Haveli a very special place and a very rare experience.

Another person I must mention is Mr Shauqat (?) the Captain at the Restaurant. His approach to service personalised Indian Hospitality for us. The excellent food prepared by the Maharaj and the ambience in the evening with live music by Mr Babloo and his team of classical instrumetalists are unforgettable.

Then there are the other staff at the haveli whose names I do not know or remember. We are grateful to all of them for making our stay in Varanasi an experience to remember and cherish for a long time. The drivers who took us to places and a very special friend we made in "Bachcha Yadav" added to the experience. We hope to return to The Haveli and are keen to explore other properties managed by the group.

THANK YOU.

Room Tip: Get a room on the Ground Level facing the River - Rooms 102 and 103 are particularly good

We stayed two nights at this authentically restored haveli at the Shivala Ghat on the banks of the Ganges: great rooms with a view and excellent shower, fresh towels in daytime, slippers, fruit and water, preparing your bed in the evening, wonderful music at dinnertime in the courtyard (but the rather small portions of food are overprized for this category hotel), yoga at rooftop, a free boattrip on the Ganges, and last but not least: the warmest welcome and the feeling of being looked after by the whole staff!

To stay at the Surauday Haveli lets you really experience the essence of Varanasi. Everything you want to see is close to hand and the constant flow of people along the banks of the Ganges is a sight to behold. The service provided by the hotel staff is warm and friendly. Tea on the terrace is a welcome touch. The dining experience with Indian classical music was interesting I felt the standard of food could have been higher but I would nevertheless highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Varanasi

This is not your usual hotel by any means it's more of an experience and a wonderful one at that. It's quirky. The staff are super attentive, friendly, amusing, cheerful, the adjectives go on. We had the suite and I'd strongly recommend you do likewise, lots of space and super views of the Ganges where you can watch life drift by your window. The only downside and I'm nit picking really is that the food could be better, it's just a little too bland but there's plenty of places nearby where you can eat well.

Room Tip: Go for the suite 202. If you can't get it go for a room on the second floor facing the Ganges. A...

Staying at the Suryauday Haveli was a wonderful choice. The room overlooked the Ganges and the nearby balcony allowed a perfect view of the nearby ghats where washing of clothes and bathing took place. Watching water buffalo lounging and children playing cricket was also a fun experience. However, the proximity to the cremation ghats made this a worthwhile and fascinating stay. Being able to walk along the Ganges in the morning and take in the entire scene without a guide or the hassle of so many tourists was priceless. The hotel staff were ever at your service. The food was exceptional and I had dishes there that I tried to duplicate in the rest of the cities I visited but was unable to. Free access to the internet was an unexpected perk. Overall, this was a great choice of hotel.

Room Tip: Face the Ganges for the view.

My partner and I spent 2 great weeks in India and travelled to Varanasi with a friend for 2 days. The Taj was mentioned as a possible hotel but I felt that it would be better if we could find somewhere to stay that was right on the riverfront - after all, you can stay in a Five-Star Western hotel anywhere in the world! I finally found the Suryauday and am so pleased I did!
This small (14 rooms) hotel is in absolutely the best location to explore and experience the city and the river with its daily routines of bathing, washing and praying.
Arrival at the hotel (at the Shivala Ghat) is by boat along the Ganges, and what a wonderful and fitting start to your Varanasi stay this is. The staff were pleasant and helpful, the food wonderful and the rooms clean, tidy and possessing everything we needed. Even though the hotel doesn't serve alcohol in the main area, the staff were happy to send a bottle of wine up to our room when requested.
You can also take advantage of the (complimentary) morning Yoga session on the rooftop terrace or just sit and enjoy the sunrise.
We would recommend this hotel absolutely - you won't be disappointed! Feb 2012

Room Tip: Ask for a river-view room. The sunrise over the river is quite spectacular and you can just sit and...

We stayed for three nights and were treated wonderfully.
Perfect location as you can walk straight out onto the ghats and wander up and down the river banks where everyone is very friendly and the area is totally safe.
If you prefer you can sit out on the little terrace balcony or watch the world go by from the roof terrace.
All the staff were very attentive at all times as was the hotel manager. The food was delicious , husband was not looking forward to being a vegetarian for 3 days but he didnt even notice, very impressed.
Varanasi is an amazing place- so much life going on along the river so this is definately the best place to stay if you are wanting to see the sunrise on the river and the evening service.
Rooms very comfortable and no noise at night .
Mixture of people staying ,mainly couples but also a group of 10 arrived for a few nights.
Would definately recommend the hotel and would like to thank them all for looking after us so well.!
