Shanti guesthouse was the first guesthouse where we stayed in with a hostel vibe and where we met a lot of backpackers! Clean, but warm rooms(but its varanasi so what do you expect), beautiful view over the Ganges and friendly staff. We arrived at night and it's a bit hard to find, I would recommend to bring a torch, since they switch off the lights at night in the small streets. Really enjoyed our stay here!

We stayed in the top floor double bedroom for 500 Rupees a night, with views of the Ganges. We heard rooms lower down were a bit cell-like, though. The rooftop restaurant was nice for breakfast and cups of tea in the evening. There was free wifi, too. We met some really nice fellow travellers at Shanti, as well. The free boat ride was great; Sunni, the guy who rows you out, is really lovely and will tell you interesting info about Varanasi. We went twice! Cons: no hot water for the shower and also Shanti is in no way a 'deluxe' choice if that's what you're looking for.

We stayed in this guest house over Divali which was the only good thing about it because the rooftop views of the fireworks were amazing! Our fan didn't work the duration of our stay which was brushed off saying we wouldn't need it. There was a mouse in our room that woke us up, crawling around the bed on numerous occasions but we were told it's ok, the kitchen is full of them and they are fine. Some really friendly and helpful staff but one very rude member who seemed to not care about his customers!

I stayed in Shanti guesthouse for one week at September 2013. The first few days were pretty tough - Varanasi is busy and crazy, I had a mouse in my room, the food was bad at the guesthouse and I kept getting lost in the old city. My escape was the amazing balcony at the guesthouse. Right on top of the Burning Ghat with a great view to the ganga and the city, the place has a really good vibe and atmosphere. I met some cool backpackers at the balcony. After getting to know the old city I realized that the location of the guesthouse is great, close to nice restaurants like "Brown Bread Bakery" and "Ganga View", close to a few music schools and yoga centers and close to the ganga. The place is not clean, but if you can get over a little mouse in your room it's definitly an expirience.

Room Tip: The rooms at the top floors are better

We came to this Guest House because we had read about it in the Lonely Planet. The rooftop is amazing, with good views of the main burning ghat and the Ganga river, and a good kitchen with incredible nutella ice-cream pancakes.
The rooms looks like cages, only a bed with no-so-clean sheets, A/C or fan, and a very dirty bathroom, not even a chair or a table....
Anyway, to do rooftop life is very good, and its a very good location to stay... but maybe its better to go there just to have dinner when the sunset, and stay in another guesthouse nearby..

I am not in the habit of writing negative reviews but, for this dive, I am happy to make an exception.

Noisy, dark and damp, I cannot work out how this place made it into the Rough Guide. The kitchen was dirty; the food depressing; the room insecure; the all-round experience grim.

Such standards might have been more excusable had the service more friendly. Instead, we were treated by a topless, beer-swilling, hostile, bolshy owner who refused our request for towels and bed sheets as it was 'too late' and 'the cloakroom was closed'. This, despite the fact we had called and booked ahead and we arrived at 10.30pm.

Avoid.

My boyfriend and I stayed here in April 2013. We chose it for the rooftop restaurant views which i think are unbeatable. The food was average but to sit, drink and gaze it was perfect.. and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from a short walk away. We went for the cheapest room option with no window which turned out to be quite hot because the fan was quiet weak but, as budget travellers, we have had worse. I thought the staff here were perhaps a bit cold on first impressions but warmed up in the end and were pretty helpful with the necessary basics. A plus which we discovered on arrival was free boat trips with a local lad called Sunny, organised by the guesthouse. You can go for sunrise and sunset.. we did both and Sunny offers to extend the boat trip on request for a reasonable price (much better than the street hawkers) which is worth it I think.
