“Went downhill”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

I stayed here in the 90s and thought it was better then. Trying to hold onto passports is ridiculous. How long does it take to enter information in a computer. Rooms were so dirty. The clincher was no water during rainy season, are you joking? The sheets smelled like they hadn't been washed in years. The workers were shifty and very childish. Always trying to cheat you in some way. Seemed more interested in playing a childish game than doing any work. The whole area looked like a cesspool. I moved over to Godowhlia Crossing and that was much better.

Room Tip: Don't stay there.

Clean and colourful with rooms overlooking the river. Friendly staff and cool atmosphere. Right where you want to be in Varanasi.

We booked this hotel on the strength of previous reviews so were naturally disappointed to be told by Gopal (owner) that he had booked us into neighbouring hotel (Shriva - see separate review). However, as we found out later, this was due to circumstances beyond his control - a guest due to check out had been taken ill and didn't want to move. Despite being in a different hotel, Gopal was really helpful and always on hand. He arranged taxis, let us use his wireless and, when we mad total hash of train tickets, sped off on his motorbike to sort it out. When he came back with our tickets (after phoning us from station and painstakingly going through what we needed) we went to pay him, including the 100 rupees we thought he was charging for his services. He was appalled "why would I ask you for money? If I take your money, you will remember me for 5 minutes. I want you to remember me always". And we will, he was lovely. Rooms are very much the same as Shriva. Basic but clean and about as good as you get in Varanasi unless you want to pay silly money. Would recommend.

the guest house is very comfortable and the staff is pretty helpful. English can be an issue with some the staff, but the two men in charge are very helpful and competent. Little things like having the owner break my $100 into 5 $20s made the stay very welcoming. The rooms are small, but the price is fair. The location is very good and accomadation facilites were very reliable. Whenever the power went out, the generators worked without fail and the wifi was fast and reliable anywhere in the hotel. Also, the 24/7 hot and LONG showers were great. The atmosphere is very chilled and quiet, which is exactly what I was looking for. Expect to find a lot of Japanese and Korean travellers here.

Room Tip: The singles are small, but a good value.

i went with my family. I Choose this guest house based on reviews in tripadvisor. My experience is it is old building, too interior from the main road. only option is walk the last 500m from the place where cycle rickshaw will drop you. in case you choose a motorised vehicle, they are stopped 1 km before the guest house and you have to walk with your lugguage or use porter paying extra or catch again a cycle rickshaw and walk the last 500m. the guest house is located in a very narrow lane which was also dirty with dog and cow dungs. There is no view of ganges from the guest house rooms. to have a view of the ganges you need to climb to the terrace and further one level higher near water tank. The other better option is just get out the guest house and reach munshi ghat, just a minute walk to enjoy ganges closer. The steps of the ghat were too steep for elderly people.

Honestly did not taste the food in the guest house because cheaper options were available close to the guest house. specifically wish to mention the small food outlet, in the lane which leads you from the main road to guest house. It served good quality south indian tiffin items like Idli, Vada, varieties of dosa etc at very very affordable price. Forgot to note down the name. There were two such outlets. we tried in one of them.

The rooms were old with some part of wall paints coming out. Bedsheets and bathrooms were neat and clean. The houselady was friendly. The manager/owner was indifferent. i feel they prefer foreign customer and not Indians. He spoke to me rudely because i was checking out 1/2 hour late. Ofcourse, he apologised subsequently. But the damage was done. I was just caught in heavy unexpected temple rush. The good thing is that you can keep the luggage after checkout and can use the washrooms at nominal charges. They were charging me 50% of room charge for staying for additional 4-5 hrs. so i did not choose the option and on exploring nearby i found a better guest house which charged me just Rs 200/- for 4-5 hrs of stay. compared to Baba guest house it had the advantage of being more closer to the main road, better venitilation and even per day charges were much cheaper than Baba guest house.
I am not sure of the reason foreigners prefer this guest house. It is ok but pricing is more compared to similiar and may be better guest houses around.

Room Tip: try to get a room with proper ventilation and view from the window

Not the cleanest place I have ever stayed in, but friendly people and handy for the Ghats.

The toilets are quite 'communal' with ventilation bars between WCs to adjacent rooms. You can't see into your neighbours WC but you are certainly aware of your neighbours...:)

However, this cheap place to stay and for the money its isn't bad.

We stayed here for 3 nights. Staff very nice, family run place. It is in a good location but you will need to walk to get there as the foot paths are too narrow for tuk tuks, it can be hard to find, best off to walk to Dasaswadh gat and walk to Munshi gat, its at the top of the gat stairs through some lane way. Food in the guesthouse is decent. Our room was basic, clean bed, nice hot shower etc. The only thing I can fault this place on was the the roof top terrace.. Although there are great views of the Ganges there is no tables/seats and cannot get any food and drinks.
