One becomes overstimulated in Varanasi by all the chaos. Aashray was a perfect retreat where one could relax and process the visit. Kamal and his wife have a good command of the English language, are intelligent, & great conversationalists. They freely share information regarding India's history, religions, culture, politics and education system. We had many interesting and provocative discussions. His wife is an exceptional chef and one should eat all meals at this home stay. Wow what good food. There were four of us in our travel party and we all agreed that this home stay and one other home stay were the highlights of our trip to India - Thanks to Kamal and his wife! Ruth & Ken Johnson

This is a great option for first time travellers and women travelling alone.
I personally enjoyed the fact that the house was NOT in the touristy area, which was great because i could walk around without being harrassed to buy things. It was very close to the ghats so a 50rupee rickshaw ride got you to all the centre of Varanasi. It was also a safe area (I felt safe anyways) because i walked around alone in the evenings and i was not scared one bit. The accommodations were great. The room was nice and private, away from the main living area. The bed was comfortable and the room/bathroom was very clean. The Kapur's were very sweet and welcoming. While i stayed with them, i was part of the family. The food was to die for..albeit i was stuffed half way through, nonetheless, it was amazing. The staff that worked at the home was lovely as well, i especially like the driver that i had. He was knowledgeable and was there for me when hockers were bugging me.
I felt very safe and comfortable my entire stay here.

Kamal and his wife not only provided most comfortable accommodations, but also significant insight into the peoples and environment of Varanasi and India in general. His insights, based on a lifetime in Varanasi, and personal tours added immensely to our experience and understanding of our trip. Her perspective, outspoken and diverse, made for most interesting and lively conversations, adding a depth of understanding we would not have experienced otherwise. Her meals were to die for, truely fitting for Varanasi.

We stayed for three nights with Mr. and Mrs. Kapur and could not have been more pleased. Their home is wonderful and very welcoming. And for the three days we stayed with them, we were like family.

The best thing about staying with them is that they arrange everything for you. From airport transportation to city tours to visiting the Ganges, they do it all so you don't have to. You're on vacation so why would you want to?

This is NOT an easy place to visit. In fact, it's the hardest place I have visited. Hard in the sense of logistics. The roads are so bad that it's nearly impossible to get around. Driving a mile may take 30 minutes between the crazy traffic, cows lying in the roads and the large holes in the ground. So having Mr. Kapur arrange a driver to transport us to and from the airport as well as around town was a lifesaver. The driver also took us to restaurants that Mr. Kapur recommended which took the hassle out of trying to figure out where to eat. Mr. Kapur also escorted us on a early morning sunrise Ganges tour which enabled us to experience what the Ganges is all about. I would not recommend trying to get around Varanasi without someone's assistance and a guide. It's just not that kind of city...

The rooms were comfortable and had good air conditioning and linens. They are not fancy, but then again, they are not advertised as such. The internet worked sometimes, and sometimes it did not. The breakfasts and dinners were also very delicious and large. We were stuffed every time, and each meal was different so we got to experience a wide variety of dishes. We also enjoyed our meal times because at the dinners we got to chat with the Kapurs a lot and learn about them, their travels, their lives and their perspectives. It is these exchanges that made the trip memorable...

If I had one recommendation, it would be that perhaps snacks could be left out for guests to enjoy. It would be a nice touch.

We really enjoyed to finish our 1 month trip in India here. The room is very comfortable, very clean, well decorated and quiet. M. and Mrs Kapur are very charming people : they make you feel like home and we had good discussions with them. Mrs Kapur is an amazing cook : she has prepared the best diners and breakfasts we had in India. It's not located on the ghâts but you are close enough to be in the main ghât in 10 minutes with a rickshaw and far enough to be in a quiet place to relax. The best place to stay in Vârânasî !

My review is mixed, there were very wonderful parts of my stay with the Kapurs and there were parts of my stay that I didn't like. The positives -Mr. Kapur arranged pick up for my husband and I from the train station, and the driver met us at the train door. - The location of the home is very nice, being that it is away from the hectic area of Varanasi but not too far away to get around easily. - The room and bed were very comfortable. The pillows were super soft! - Mrs. Kapur was very warm and welcoming. She helped us get connected with our friend staying at another hotel and she was very pleasant to have a conversation with. - The breakfast was absolutely wonderful. There was a variety of options available from traditional Indian food too fruit and cereal. The negatives are because this is a Home Stay and advertised as such. If it were advertised as a hotel etc.. I might not have minded the following as they are some of the negative norms that come with a hotel: - unfortunately now i have to take back what i said about the car service that was overpriced. We paid the driver 500 rupees as advised, to then be later told by Mr. Kapur that, that money was to go to him not the driver, that the driver probably thinks that was a tip, and that we needed to get the money back from the driver. - I contacted Mr. Kapur prior to us arriving about the cost of the boat tour/guide services and he told me his services were free and something he did for his guest. When I arrived this was not the case, there was a book of services and the boat ride was 1100 rupees ("him riding with us was free") that we paid him. Basically anything that Mr. Kapur provides as advice is overpriced. He let us know we were free to find cheaper priced options on our own. -Mr. Kapur's information, was delivered to us as a dry lecture. I was told to ask questioned when he finished, and actually he would mostly only answer my husband's questions. - we decided to use his boat service because of the reviews even though we found a boat via The Brown Bread Bakery for 50 rupees an hour per-person (which we used for a great evening ride). Mr. Kapur advertises his boat ride as 3 hours. We made it back to the house within 2 hours we may have been on the boat for about 1 hour. After having stayed at multiple home-stays I've just always appreciated them as safe havens from the rest of the tourist traps and people that would rip me off, I don't feel that I got that with Mr. Kapur. Basically if you have a tiny bit of adventure and time (we were there for almost 3days), figure it out on your own; otherwise, use Mr. Kapur's options for the convenience.

Thanks Erica for your honest and candid feedback. We are grateful for all the nice things you have stated. However, I regret that you felt that you either over-payed for services or payed for services that should have been free. Communication gap could be one reason as :

1. All the services beyond your stay are outsourced and have to be paid for at our end and hence also billed to the guest. All such services like transport for Ganga Arti, City tour, tour to Sarnath, Morning boat ride are printed along with their respective costs and kept in the guestroom for your information. If a guest needs a guide along with the transport, that’s a separate cost and differs from place to place. Most of the times, our guests donot need a guide as they are well informed about different aspects and things during their discussions with Mr Kapur. Mr Kapur, on request, sometimes accompanies the guests, especially for the morning boat ride, and that he does as a personal gesture of warmth and knowledge sharing. Ofcourse there is no fees to that. But the taxi service and boat ride fees always remain payable as these are outsourced costs.

2. A lot of Indian Tourists and some foreign tourists do opt for the Rs 50 per person boat ride you mention which is easily available everywhere on the ghats (river banks). However, you would appreciate that these are public boat rides with 20, 30 or even 50 other persons on the same boat with no guide. If you were to hire a private boat for yourself with a guide (which most tourists do), you can compare costs and you would find that the market rates are much higher than what you paid at the homestay for the same service.

We even tried to absorb certain out of pocket costs ourselves, assuming communication gap, and did not bill you for those, but I can see that we have still not been able to win your confidence.

Most importantly, no guest at the homestay is under any obligation to opt for these extra services. Its always a choice, an option which the guest can choose not to exercise.

At a homestay like ours, everything is personalised and that is what guests take back with them as memories. We would be happy to have you back with us again, whenever you come to this part of the world.
