“An absolute gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2011

Staying at this small palace was one of the highlights of our trip to India. We felt like guests in a beautiful home. Varanasi is a very intense, chaotic , and fascinating place. It was a pleasure to return to this gorgeous hotel and sit by the lovely pool. The staff was friendly and attentive, especially the charming "sous chef" Sumalya Sarker. The food that he served was absolutely divine. Yet, more importantly, he was so kind and so charming that we so enjoyed our time with him. He not only cares about the guests and their comfort but he is interested in helping the local community.

I am sure this is the best hotel in town and it is great to come back from the busy river to the large gardens which provide an oasis of calm. The staff like everywhere else was very friendly and attentive. The big let down as really our room - Laos. By now means was it airy, painted in light pink or provided a view of the gardens. The room was in dark green, it had 2 or 3 small windows which overlooked the main terrace where the guests assembled for breakfast and dinner (in effect the kitchen door was right next to our room). curtains do thus almost completely cover the windows and I suspect a lack of ventilation explained the smell/stuffiness of the room. The bathroom on the other hand was bright and very spacious.

The food also appeared extremely pricy and they really, really struggled with Earl Grey tea.

Would I recommend this hotel to a friend? I suspect if you want this type of luxury then there may not be much alternative in Varanasi. I strongly suggest you ask for confirmation for a room on the first floor rather than ground.

OK. If you every want to experience what going back in time and being Indian royalty or a British governor was like, come here. It was relaxed luxury and it doesn't have to prove anything to anybody. Our suite was airy, spacious and harmonious. I'm not sure if the British built it or an Indian royal but the architecture demonstrated great restraint and elegance. Our suite had black and white photographs of Queen Elizabeth in the hotel in the 1950's with Nehru. We're not normally impressed with hotels or restaurants flouting their celebrity guests but in this case, we really felt transported back to another era. Our only unpleasantry was a butler who was aggressively fishing for a compliment (and a tip)on folding a swan out of the bathroom towel. And then there was the food. Their chef specializes in ancient regional dishes with a modern sensibility. We let him order for us and were taken to food heaven. His gift of combining and complementing flavors was world class. Our only regret is that we had to leave too soon. Varanasi can be oppressive. But this property takes the meaning of word "oasis" to another level.

We booked the hotel for a 3 night stay but ended up only for one night due to other commitments and leaving early was the saddest part. This is one of the most beautiful heritage properties with impeccable service and regal experience unlike any other.

I highly recommend it for the feel of going back in time, experiencing beautiful spirituality, amazing food and warmest hospitality.

yes it is expensive but hey i think worth every cent - it was my first visit to india and varanasi which is a holy pilgrimage - the arrival is amazing , the staff and hotel , well it really is a private palace which you can eat so well and sleep in beautiful rooms - if you are not staying at the hotel you cannot visit or eat so it is great to avoid seeing many other people - i would rate this hotel as the best because the staff and grounds allow you to enjoy a quiet haven from the madness that is the city of varanasi - greg

We stayed in this hotel from Aug 14th to Aug 16th 2010. This is a hotel of the Taj group in India. It is a beautiful hotel and very sophisticated personnel. Room was large and service was great. The restaurant has so much variety in food. The hotel service is great. They make sure that your stay is absolutely pleasant and memorable.

It was easily 115 degrees outside when we stayed at this hotel. The agency through whom we booked our tour recommended it as being the best in Varanasi. It was also the most expensive of all the hotels we stayed at in India on our trip. I am still trying to understand why this was the case.
There was absolutely no air conditioning in the bathrooms. It was so hot in there that I tried very hard not to have to use the facilities in order to avoid being in a cauldron (literally).
The food was terrible and outrageously expensive. The hotel tried to have a gourmet menu, but this failed due to the total lack of competance of the chef. The hotel would have been better off just offering simply prepared food options. There was no where else to eat nearby that we would have trusted, so we and others were forced to eat in the hotel dining room.
The grounds were poorly maintained. All the plants and grass were dead. By contrast, the hotels we stayed at in Jaipur, Agra and Delhi in the same heat, had beautifully maintained grounds.
The positive comments I have about this hotel, are that it was clean inside, the rooms were very nice with period furnishings, and the service was fine.
For a hotel as historically famous and expensive as this one is, we still should have had no complaints to make.
