Description: Brown Bread Bakery and Organic Food P.Ltd is the very first organic bakery with restaurant in India with branches in Varanasi and Delhi. Since 2015 we started also a Vegan restaurant Varanasi. The company supports the projects of Learn for Life by using the profits for funding the school and to provide fair working conditions for all the staff. We use as many organic ingredients as possible for our products. All our bakery items are made from different kinds of organic grains which are always grinded freshly. The grains, the rice and the lentils are produced by certified small farmers which we visit and check regularly.

This place was our sanctuary that we ended up going to 3 days in a row. We were in Varanasi in summer and it was incredibly steamy and sweaty and we lived for the lemon granitas at Brown Bread Bakery - amazing! Can not recommend highly enough - go for the extra large!

The food was so-so but we didn't care as the location was great, and it was lovely and peaceful to sit up on the rooftop. The pizzas were ok, but we had great pancakes one day.

Don't be fooled by the cafe before it on the same laneway also calling itself the brown bread bakery as they shouted out to us every time we walked by trying to falsely lure us in.

We also had the latest Lonely Planet that lists the old address of where it previously used to be so make sure you google the location before you go as it is definitely worth a visit.

We enjoyed shopping for textiles in the shop downstairs too and the staff were all lovely.

My only real complaint is the food was slow. However, they say it is because they make everything fresh so what can we expect? I appreciated their honesty about this as i think they acknowledge the extra time it will take on the menu. And we weren't in a real rush so didn't really matter

It was also great to know that we were supporting local kids and families.

This place took us 3 days to find - and we managed it, by accident after following a sign for a japanese/korean place....definately worth it though...
The views are wonderful - great to lie around on cushions watching the monkeys running around ...The food is lovely - service is a bit slow - but then it always is in INdia ....
Would highly recommend it

This cafe tucked away on one of the lanes in Varanassi is well worth searching out. Great food for a good cause with fantastic views from the roof terrace

You may have heard or read about this but apparently there have been numerous fake brown bread cafe's opening up around Varanasi old town, in fact there is one only doors away from this one. Some reviewers have said it is as good if not better but we wouldn't know, this cafe turned out to be quite decent and has a gorgeous roof top terrace where you can enjoy peace and quite away from the turmoil down below.

Our breakfast this morning was very nice, decent espresso coffee nice bread roll sandwich and tasty fruit juice. Neither cheap or expensive, this ofcourse is very subjective according to the Travellers budget. Service is ok, not the friendliest but neither the worst we have encountered in India so far. All in all we were quite happy to visit Brown Bread in two separate occasions if only to enjoy the terrace peace and quiet. Oh and yes there is a protective fencing in place to keep some nasty monkeys at bay...feels like a reverse zoo where people are the attraction. Very entertaining!

Pretty confused after two breakfasts this morning in both of the BBBakeries...

The first one was up 4 flights of stairs with a rooftop terrace. Ordered one croissant, cinnamon roll, museli with yoghurt and a latte. Croissant was like a hard scone, cinnamon roll was just bread, museli and yoghurt were disgusting and the latte was brown milk.

Second one was on the other side of the road, up just one flight of stairs in a room with lots of mats on the floor around small low tables. Coffee was much better, banana cake was ok and croissant was closer to what you'd expect. This one also had pictures of a school and a 'Learn for Life' sign in the restaurant area and was 20% cheaper than the other.

Unfortunately, i think that the second, much better restaurant might actually be the fake one as there are references to the real one having a rooftop terrace. The Lonely Planet doesn't mention any rooftop terrace, but whomever is responding to some of these reviews on Tripadvisor supposedly on behalf of the real BBBakery suggests that they sold the old location and then bought the new location with the rooftop terrace. I'm pretty dubious about this, particulalry as they mention something about the school they support having changed location in their menu, but i think that the Learn for Life website does link to the rooftop BBB webpage???

Either way, neither are great, let's just hope that one is acutally supporting a charity.
