“So so place with unfriendly staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2011

I stayed at Tourist Rest House for one night during my trip to Agra in early August. My first arrival I had not so good experience with the reception, he didn't seem to be helpful and friendly. The breakfast serve at the hotel was not so good, I ordered banana pancake, it was tasteless and the staff kept me waiting for almost 30 minutes. The room was decent for the price I paid.

Overall, it was so so experience and I think it is safe enough for a solo traveller like myself.

Room Tip: Get the room with aircon since the fan room is anoying and you can't keep your window open due t...

This place was a bit run down but it did what it said it would, which is it gave us a place to stay. Rooms were basic and bathrooms didn't seem to have hot water but it was so hot outside that didn't matter too much. Owner started off a little defensive but seemed to warm to the party I was with made up of 16 students! Auto-rickshaw drivers outside hotel seem to also double up as kitchen staff which was a bit weird and they can be a bit pushy as I think they get commission for taking you to certain shops, but they were quite helpful with early morning run to train station and complimentary pick up on arrival at Agra. Overall a pleasant enough stay if you are not looking for anything fancy or special.

Room Tip: ask for a room NOT on the ground floor unless you want people eating dinner right outside your windo...

This is perhaps the best budget hotel I have ever stayed in.
Clean, tidy and friendly. But most important, the staff value YOU and not just your money. They were so friendly and helpful, and not at all buying in to the sadly omnipresent commission racket that plagues India.

Stay here, you won't regret it!

We arrived at this hotel because we were in Jaipur the day before and we landed there at the very-well managed and nice hotel the Sunder Palace. Since we had a very good experience there this was logical to trust them and book this hotel in Agra (this Tourist Rest House) which belongs to the same owners.

It has been terrible! First of all since we would arrive late at Agra station we have asked them to pick up us. We have suffered from a stupid train employee who made us missing the correct station. We arrived by our means, paying a rickshaw to get there. What was the surprise then while checking-in to be shouted at by the hotel employee who has waited for us at the other station. We had to explain that it was not our fault, we kept asking to the employee many times but he decided to cheat us (why? we still do not know).

Now the room... All the ones we saw where old, not well-maintained so we decided to go for the cheapest one without AC (the room 104 for 550 Rs). It was late so we decided to stay and we were asked to pay in advance (we understood why afterwards!!)

This was in fact really expensive for the value! The toilet was about to collapse, no hot water, the paint of the walls was taken away every time our bags or anything else touched them... The food is not good, service is unfriendly.

The surprise(s):
- When trying to leave the hotel (with the room paid) at 5.45am to go visiting the Taj' we were locked in the hotel and could not get out. An employee who did not speak a word of english made us to understand we had to wait. We thought he did not have the key... No, he was waiting for the approval of the manager before opening the door! Waiting 10 minutes for the manager to take his shower!!!
- There were BED BUGS in the bed! We have been both badly bitten (Room 104 AVOID!!). We kept scratching ourselves for 3 days...
- Internet is being charged but does not work

Avoid this hotel at all costs. We could not believe the reviews made by Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Le Routard!! They should come back ASAP to see how is this hotel right NOW! This hotel is a slump.

Terrific rooms and friendly, helpful service. Far better than we expected to find for that price in Agra. Restaurant was just ok.

Ok, we didn't actually spend a night here as we arrived on the train from Varanasi at 6.30am and left on the train to Delhi at 8pm that night.
We turned up at the hotel after reading about it in LP. We decided that it would be a good idea to be able to leave our packs somewhere while we did the Taj and then have somewhere to chill out/shower before hitting the train that night. The hotel manager was great, he charged us 200 rupees for a room for the day, which was pretty good value considering the amount of time we had it for. The room was small, reasonably clean with a very small bathroom and hot water. believe me, it was one of the best 200 rupees we have ever spent.
We ate at the restaurant and the food was good, cheap and plentyful.
Considering the insanity that is Agra, this hotel was quiet and peaceful and a perfect choice for us.

Agra was our first stop in a three week tour of India. India, and Agra, can be overwhelming at first. This hotel may not be centrally located (but what is in Agra?) but offers a pick-up from the railway station (which all went perfect). The rooms are clean and hot water is usually available. The highlight is the garden of the restaurant, not because of the food (which is average) but because of the great atmosphere. In the garden you cannot hear the busy traffic outside, and at night they lit candles and there's a bonfire. The only noise you'll here hear is made by the monkeys in the trees and on the roof.

The hostel offers (paid) wifi and computer access.

While I would not recommend anyone to spend a lot of time in Agra (there's not much more than the Fort and, of course, the Taj Mahal) if you have to stay in the city pick this hostel.
