“A great stay for us all”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Historic heritage hotel. Nice grounds , lounge, large pool area. Spacious and a nice retreat away from the immediate bustle of Agra. VERY large airy and comfortable bedrooms, large beds, tall ceilings, with individual integral adjoining lounges ( lounge about 16 foot by 10) , nicely air conditioned. Very good dining and an attractive swimming pool with a pagoda ( where Indian solo dancers performed in the evening). Friendly and welcoming . Good service. 6 of us aged 5 to mid 60s arrived by about 7 am morning train from Varanesi. Clearly this was well ahead of check out time for other guests. We were made very welcome and were immediately given free two very large suites to settle in before transferring to our booked suites. Some of the electric switches might have dated from the 1920s, but everything worked well. To us this added to the period charm. Friendly regular tuk tuk service outside

Room Tip: Choose rooms on second foor. Rooms at the far end of the verandah eg 203, 204 , 205 quieter. Like ho...

First I'd like to start by saying that I believe this hotel has a lot of potential. It could be turned into a great hotel with that antique luxury charm. However, the concept has not been worked through and the hotel feels rather old and tired.

An oasis of calm from the intensity of downtown Agra this is a superb value alternative to the higher end hotels of the area. Friendly staff, spacious, clean rooms and a lovely setting within striking distance of the Taj Mahal. Superb evening buffet and morning breakfast. Pool area very nice as well. Highly recommended.

It is a heritage hotel, one of the very few in crazy touristy Agra, and we chose it simply because of that fact, apart from its central location. And we did not regret it --rather, came away charmed and refreshed.

First, the pros...its a lovely old building, with large, superbly cool suites on the ground floor that open up into the front garden on the front side, and onto the pool side garden at the back. Rooms are located on an upper floor. It is located on MG Road, which is close to the Cantt railway station, the Agra Fort and not far from the Taj.

It has an old world ambience, with the air and decor somewhat redolent of the 70s even as some of the furniture goes back 80 years or more. Think traditional, rather touristy drapes in the restaurant complete with evening entertainment comprising a sitar player and tabalchi, and kathak dancers in a dome by the pool --and you get the picture. Incidentally, the sitar player is excellent --and like everything about this hotel, is the real thing, classy and competent if a little old-fashioned. You see that in the linen and the comfortable mattresses --all good quality, albeit a little well-worn and homely.

So lets be clear --this is not a luxury hotel and is certainly not top-end. But with just a little more investment --and a spruced up menu which is currently rather unimaginative though the food preparation is excellent-- it can get close.

So at current rates, and given the lack of similarly good options in this price range --the Grand Imperial in Agra is very good value for money, with a genuine heritage ambience and charm thrown in for free. Go there, take your kids, and enjoy Indian hospitality redolent of 50 years ago.

Such a nice change from the minimalistic, sharp edged new hotels or the over-priced 5 stars in the tourist traps of India.

Room Tip: Try to get a suite, the best ones are those which open into the pool-side garden at the back

300 year old hotel means moldy corners and scary furniture and small beds. The food in this hotel was also not excellent and quite expensive.
But! I left my iPhone in the grounds and a German couple found it and turned it over to the reception who looked thru my photos and matched my face to my passport copy with them. So all in all I have good memories of the place.

I like this property because they give good space for my driver to sleep . The rooms have old world charm and have been done well. I only wish that they improve the breakfast pread at their restaurant. The staff is always helpful but the place needs some investments to truly be called luxury hotel.

Room Tip: Take the pool facing room
