Hotel Sheela Inn
Ranked #92 of 142 Hotels in Agra
Reviewed June 7, 2009

Having been to Agra before and only going back due to my son wanting to se the Taj Mahal yet again, I looked for a conveniently located hotel. Due to the usual January fog the trains were late and we ended up not actually spending the night at the Sheela Inn but had a room in the hotel from midday until 10pm.

The room was of an ok standard - a bit cold. No hot water but they provided hot bucket water and towels when requested. Helped me call the train station a few times to check our train time. The hotel does not have 24 hour check in/out. There is a roof top restaurant. For those with kids/families there were quite a few families staying when I was there. The rooftop is quite big so kids can play.

As for the location the hotel is close to the Taj Mahal and it seemed to be quiet. For those who need it there is a kind of shopping mall with McDonalds not far away.

Basically just your average Indian hotel!

The Sheela Inn is an offshoot of another, equally cheap, hotel which you can only hope is a bit nicer than its grubby sister.

The hotel is like a prison - dank, bleak and a bit depressing. The room was reasonably spacious enough though the wall was crawling with ants which the staff were entirely disinterested in. The bathroom was a bit grim but functional. However, Lonely Planet's assertion that the hotel has "reliable 24 hour hot water" is, as ever, woefully inaccurate - the hotel has no hot water over summer which is pretty important when you're in one of the filthiest cities in the world.

The staff here were very good, despite their lack of interest in the ants, and have no truck with the scheming taxi drivers who swarm nearby. Luckily you won't need them for Agra's biggest attraction which is only a 15 minute walk away from you. And, if you fancy some luxury and a nice drink with amazing views, the Oberoi Hotel is only 5 minutes away from you towards the Taj. Worht going in to use their toilets and pinch their flannels...

I contacted the hotel with Lonely Planet author recommendation. It is okey if you have to stay there. I am sure there are better places. No hot water!! Not so clean, Had dirty sheets, but changed when I asked. So close to Taj Mahal 5 min walk from the East Gate. That was nice. I only stayed there one nite. Cleaning personel was all men, and their personal highgyne was bad. So if they are cleaning the rooms. No more to say!!!

I simply wanted somewhere for one night for a cheap price while visiting the Taj Mahal, and the Sheela Inn ticked the boxes.
It is clean. There's a friendly welcome. It's an easy walk from the Taj. And at something like £7 for a night, an absolute snip.
However, as other reviewers have said, hot water was rare and the shower was useless.
I expected chilly weather in February, but wasn't prepared for the cold night with one thin sheet on the bed.
The restaurant on the roof serves good, nourishing, cheap food.

You can see the Oberoi from the Sheela Inn. Went there, as guidebooks recommend, for cocktails. Beautiful place. Wish I could afford it! The two tequila sunrises weren't excessively priced, but the cost was more than the combined price of the train from Delhi, the room for the night, and the price of hiring a driver for the day in Agra.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in Nov. Very average hotel, arrived about 9am after an overnight train journey, checked in, tried to have a shower, but no hot water. There's meant to be hot water 7am - 10am but if you're unlucky [like us] all the hot water is used up by 9am. Offered a bucket of hot water...never appeared. Food in restaurant average, chai especially terrible! Would prob not stay here again, unless desperate

Sheela Inn and Hotel Sheela are run by the same helpful staff. Hotel Sheela is next to the Taj Mahal East Gate entrance whereas this Sheela Inn is down the road a bit. Sheela Inn is larger and nicer and has bigger rooms with beautiful multicolored marble flooring. Sheela Inn is still under development--not all rooms are ready yet. The big plus is the nice rooftop restaurant and the flight of stairs on the roof which leads to a balcony where you can view the Taj Mahal. I walked to the Taj and shop area some of the time, but you can also take the bike rickshaws for about 10 rupees/person each direction. Don't pay more and beware of the overly pesty locals!! Another plus--my family and I ordered Pizza Hut delivery for dinner one night. Just give them the hotel number so they can get good directions.
