Stayed here for one night on a tour of North India. Comfortable rooms, bathroom a little dated but bedroom appeared to have been re-modernised. Spacious rooms, very comfortable. Enjoyed our stay!

We recently planned a trip to Agra on short notice and therefore could not make hotel reservations in advance. Our party consisted of 4 friends - 2 Indians and 2 white Americans. After a day of sight seeing we were cruising near the Taj Mahal in search of a hotel to spend the night at when we came across the Clarks Shiraz. The 2 Indians went in to inquire whether they had rooms available for the night. We were both immaculately dressed, clean shaven, and wearing expensive watches. As we were studying the rate card to see which of their rooms fit our budget, we could sense the receptionist size us up. When we had chosen the category of room we desired and asked for a reservation, the receptionist informed us that the hotel was fully booked in all categories of rooms. Something in the manner of his speech and behavior made us suspicious. We went outside and requested our American friends to go in and inquire about room availability. Our friends were immediately informed that rooms were available. So then our friends asked for two double rooms. Then the receptionist inquired whether the occupants of the second room would be foreigners or Indians. Our friends mentioned that it would be the Indians who were just in. At this point, instead of apologizing for the blatant discrimination, the receptionist became all stiff and officious and behaved as though my American friends were the bigoted racists and not he. Needless to say, we did not stay at the hotel. This review is the only way for me to reveal to the larger travel community the bigoted, racist and unapologetically discriminative behavior of this hotel. Please be aware of this before planning to stay at this hotel. Please get in touch with me if you want more details.

The reviews for this hotel were mixed with a number of people saying that the rooms were tired. However, as Otel.com were offering the excellent rate of about $100 (including breakfast) we decided to give it a try and are very glad that we did.

I thought that we might be given a poor room because of our low rate but we were given a very nice renovated room in the Shiraz Tower. We didn't accept the first 2 rooms that we were offered in the Tower as the first one had a connecting door, and they always let in noise, and the other one was by the elevator and would again have been noisy. We were allocated these 2 rooms depite being assured by the front desk that neither had connecting doors or were near the elevators!

A couple of reviews had complained about noise due to thin walls. We had no such problems during our 2 night stay although we could certainly hear some scraping etc from people above us.

The breakfast is fine but is extremely busy when the tour groups eat earlier in the morning. We had a late breakfast the 2nd morning, after visting the Taj, and it was very relaxed and the staff much better. We ate our 2 evening meals at restaurants close by. I think the one was the Only and was very good except it is used by groups. You could walk but it is better at night time to pay 10 rupees for a cycle rickshaw.

The staff were all very pleasant even when I didn't want the first 2 rooms offered!

Big busses full of tourists are dropped off here. We don't like that. The rooms are clean and you can sleep well. The beds are good.
But it is far too expensive for what you get! Book via internet a real 5 star hotel like ITC for the same price and you will be very happy!
